Default Wanted: Sal Guardado

In 1985, Sal Guardado began seeing Sally. Sally immediately fell in love with Sal and after a few weeks, they had moved in with Sally's aunty Lidia. A few weeks after they had moved in, Sal's behavoir began to change and he became more aggressive. At one stage, he shouted at Sally's sister for not letting him use the van that she borrrowed from a friend.

A few months later, Sally was dropped off home by a male friend, which made Sal jealous. They began to argue. Sally's aunty arrived home midway through the argument. Sal then asked Lidia to go and buy cigarettes. When she returned the house appeared to be empty, so she sat down and began to watch TV. As she was watching TV, the bedroom door slowly opened and Sal came out and began to strangle Lidia. He then began to hit Lidia over the head with a bowling ball. Lidia suffered a concussion and lacerations.

Lidia awoke 45 minutes later, feeling disorientated. She went into the bedroom and found Sally dead and covered up on the bed.

The family later found out that Sal had a criminal history.

I think he's either in Miami or most likely Mexico..........and if he has indeed slipped south of the border and not reared his ugly head in this long.....part of me wonders whether he'll ever be caught

I caught this segment as well. This case really angered me because Sal was so irrational and Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, if you will. In a way, he reminds me of the pharmacy student who killed his girlfriend because she wouldn't pull strings to get him back into the pharmacy program he was enrolled in (another segment--Richard Bockledge, perhaps?) Anyway, I found the men similar because they both showed very irrational and selfish patterns of behavior. I doubt that Sal even believes he did anything wrong in this case. For the sake of the aunt and Sally's family, I do hope they catch this guy.

I believe he has fled to Mexico or some place and unfortunately will never be caught.

Yeah, that was awesome. I was glad to see that Andrew Luster was caught. It was even better after I learned that Dog, the Bounty Hunter was behind it.

The only crappy part of that whole thing is that Dog got in trouble for it, since bounty hunting is apparently illegal in Mexico.

Wow, so this guy is still out there then. Isn't he Mexican? I'll bet he's somewhere in a sparsely populated place that he can blend in like Mexico City or something.

Well I agree Guardado probably is in Mexico. Although knowing the state of our border he probably is commuting back and forth with little worry of being caught. Even if he was caught in Mexico, Mexico would refuse to extradite him until prosecutors promised not to seek the death penalty.

Under California sentencing guidelines in effect in 1985, Guardado could either get the death penalty or 25 years to life. Although the prosecutor's might try to plead him down to 2nd degree murder which carries a 15 year to life sentence. It would be hard but not impossible to prove that he pre meditated this vicious and senselsss murder. California sentencing laws have changed little since 1985 so they are basically the same except now there is LWOP and that wasnt added to the rule in California until the late 1980's.

This is a case I haven't thought of in a long time. I do remember it though...attacking someone with a bowling ball is hard to forget. I'm sorry they haven't solved it. That guy was vermin.

Sal seemed to be running that household. I can't believe that he ordered the aunt to get him cigarettes and she obliged!

I still can't believe they never caught this guy. He was a deadbeat without any money, and he was still able to flee the city? I was under the impression he couldn't scrap together bus fare.

He's got a few sets of charges against him....would the attack on Lidia be considered assault or attempted murder?

Well, I believe he has a warrant out for his arrest for 1st degree murder as well as attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon the latter two charges being for the attack on Lydia. Well, my guess is that Guardado went to Mexico, even if he could have got on an Amtrak train he could have got down to the San Diego area and then easily got to the border from there. My guess is after he killed Sally and knocked out Lydia that he rummaged through the house looking for money or anything that had any value so that he could pawn it off for money. He probably commutes back and forth between California and Mexico. It would not surprise me if he was living in the Bay Area to this day. He probably figures that because nearly 24 years has passed since the crime that the police are not looking for him anymore.

I don't blame Sally for falling for Sal, but I can't believe she saw anything romantic in him after he lost his job and car after just a couple weeks within meeting him. Then he moves in with her even though she hardly knows him that well and he refuses to do anything except go bowling with his friends who are probably deadbeats like himself and loaf around the house all while being nothing but a selfish bastard. Her sister Sherri expressed that Sally really wanted him to leave because he was so controlling. If I were in Sally's position or her aunt or sister, I would have ordered Sal out of the house and to never come back the moment he tried to take Sherri's van.

They need to replay this on Spike to get this idiot captured. When they do, they should post pictures of what he might look like today at an older age and pictures of him without facial hair because that should make him easier to capture.
