Chris struggles with typing and spelling, but he can usually get his question posted. He tries the best he can. He's been a good member for the last 20 years.

If you try really hard to piece it together, you can usually understand him and get the gist of it. What he's asking is if in the pilot episode the Chief could have handled it differently when Katie made that remark about her mother.

To answer the question, yes, he could and should have handled it differently besides smacking her. He could have sent her to her room without dinner or grounded her. Things were different back in the early 1980s.

In the 70s, it was common for sitcom parents to slap and spank their kids...or threaten to do it, perhaps because shows were aiming to be more realistic. There was slapping all the time on One Day at a Time and belt-brandishing threats on Good Times.

That wouldn't go over too well on sitcoms today. The Chief should have sent Katie to her room, given her a long lecture, and then grounded her.
