Exclamation British Talk Show "The Jeremy Kyle Show" Cancelled after Guest's Suicide

ITV Cancels "The Jeremy Kyle Show" after Death of Guest
by Georg Szalai
May 15, 2019

U.K. TV giant ITV said Wednesday that it has canceled tabloid talk show "The Jeremy Kyle Show" after the death of a guest. The news was treated as a potential death by suicide.

"Given the gravity of recent events we have decided to end production of The Jeremy Kyle Show," said ITV CEO Carolyn McCall. "The Jeremy Kyle Show has had a loyal audience and has been made by a dedicated production team for 14 years, but now is the right time for the show to end."

She added: "Everyone at ITV's thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of Steve Dymond.” Dymond, 63, was found dead last week after recording an episode of the show.

The BBC reported that the episode focused on the subject of infidelity, and Dymond took a lie detector test on the show. A member of the audience who was at the recording told the BBC that Dymond was shocked and cried after failing the test, while his fiancee was sobbing.

Members of the U.K. parliament called for the show to be canceled, with Prime Minister Theresa May's office calling the death "deeply concerning."

ITV earlier in the week reiterated that "everyone at ITV and The Jeremy Kyle Show is shocked and saddened at the news of the death of a participant in the show a week after the recording of the episode they featured in, and our thoughts are with their family and friends. We will not screen the episode in which they featured." It suspended both filming and airing of the show.

On Wednesday, ITV said it has canceled the show for good, but would continue to work with Kyle on other projects.

I'm surprised that this kind of incident didn't happen before and am pleased that the show has been permanently terminated.

"The Jeremy Kyle Show" Inquest: Footage of Man Who Took his Own Life after Appearing on Now-Axed ITV Program Shown to Public for the First Time
by Max Goldbart
September 5, 2024

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZI5g5Kgtux4

The inquest of the man who took his own life after appearing on ITV‘s "The Jeremy Kyle Show" has just been shown never-before-seen footage of his time on the program, in which a weeping Steve Dymond can be seen pleading with the host over the accuracy of lie detectors and whether he had been unfaithful.

Dymond’s inquest is taking place this week. He took his own life seven days after filming for the now-axed talk show and footage from the episode has never been viewed until now

In the footage, Dymond is pleading and in tears as he was accused of being a liar by Kyle, next to his partner Jane.

He was asked if he had been unfaithful to Jane and responded “No” but the show’s lie detectors, which have since been called into question, said he was lying. Dymond can be seen pleading with Kyle and his partner Jane saying that he had been faithful, as Jane also weeps.

But while Kyle talked up the accuracy of the lie detectors, they have been called into question since the show was axed almost immediately after Dymond took his own life.

During a heated hearing with the DCMS Committee in June 2019, ITV Studios execs were chided for an “astonishing” and “irresponsible” lack of knowledge of the effectiveness of lie detectors. Julian Bellamy and Tom McLennan had been unable to state the percentage accuracy of the lie detectors but had said they were “not 100% accurate.

Speaking today at the inquest, the BBC reported that Kyle said he did not set out to humiliate Dymond, going as far as to say he “de-escalated” the situation.

From the moment Steve Dymond came out, I called him ‘mate’, I called him ‘pal,'” the BBC reported Kyle said. “I calmed it down, I pushed it backstage. And that was what the show was all about – conflict resolution.

According to the BBC, the presenter was asked by inquest counsel Rachel Spearing whether he felt Dymond was “humiliated” on the show, and Kyle replied: “No. I’ve read that I called him a traitor. No I didn’t. It was the show as I understood the show.

Since "The Jeremy Kyle Show" was axed, there has been a duty of care reckoning in the UK TV industry and broadcasters now have stricter measures when it comes to finding contestants.

The inquest into Dymond’s death continues.

Coroner Rules "The Jeremy Kyle Show" cannot be Blamed for Guest's Suicide
by Jake Kanter
September 10, 2024

"The Jeremy Kyle Show" should not be blamed for the death of one of its guests, a coroner has ruled.

Hampshire coroner Jason Pegg has reportedly ruled that it would be speculative to link ITV‘s Jerry Springer-style format to the suicide of Steve Dymond, 63, in May 2019.

Per Sky News, Pegg concluded: “There is an absence of reliable evidence that demonstrates that Steven Dymond’s appearance on The Jeremy Kyle Show probably caused or contributed to his death. To do so would be speculative.

I am not satisfied that events on Jeremy Kyle Show gave rise to a clear link that caused or contributed to the death of Steven Dymond such that I should be recording this as a contributing factor.

Steven Dymond had a history of a diagnosed personality disorder and mental illness which presented on a number of occasions before any appearance of The Jeremy Kyle Show and resulted in Steve Dymond self-harming or displaying thoughts of suicide.

In a statement to media, a spokesperson for Kyle said: “His Majesty’s Coroner has today clearly and unequivocally found that Jeremy Kyle did not in any way cause or contribute to the tragic suicide of Steve Dymond. He is now exonerated of that ill-informed accusation and his name has finally been cleared.

This has taken a huge toll on him and his family and he would like to thank everyone who has truly supported him through these tough times.

Jeremy Kyle is despicable. He might not be legally responsible for Steve Dymond's suicide but he is certainly morally responsible, maybe not the direct cause but definitely contributed to it. I have always thought Maury Povich's US talk show was total garbage that had no business airing on a national stage. But at least Maury uses paternity tests which are accurate. Jeremy using fabricated lie detectors is totally shameful. "He would like to thank everyone who has truly supported him through these truly tough times." You brought those tough times on yourself monster, and don't seem to have any remorse for your show's hideous tactics. I do feel bad for Jeremy's kids who are stuck with him as a father.
