I thought season four’s wait was so long! 8 months in between releases, but it’s finally here! Last season we saw Pebbles Flintstone being born. This season the Rubbles get a baby, too. Little toddler Bamm-Bamm! To see how he made his way to the Rubble family you’ll have to watch season four yourself! Season four originally aired in the 1963-64 season on ABC and was again a big hit. This season features 26 pre-historic episodes that will keep you glued to your TV. Join Fred, Wilma, Barney, Betty, Dino, Pebbles, and Bamm-Bamm for loads of laughs and fun in the Stone Age.

Memorable Episodes / Notable Guest Stars:

Some memorable episodes include the season premiere "Ann-Margrock Presents," "Little Bamm-Bamm," "Old Lady Betty," "Kleptomaniac Pebbles," "Peek-a-Boo Camera," "Flintstones and the Lion,” and "Son of Rockzilla." Guest starring voices from Ann Margaret, Howard Morris, Hal Smith and John Stephenson are included.

The packaging is excellent and the same as the first three seasons. It is a digipak with a slip sleeve. The slip sleeve cover is transparent and has Fred and Wilma on each side of a couch, Barney & Betty sitting on that couch, Dino and Pebbles on the floor, with Bamm-Bamm up front. The back of the sleeve has a photo of Bamm-Bamm and Pebbles and the back also has info on the set and series. All of the joyful bonuses on this set are also listed. The case cover has Fred Fred & Wilma behind the couch, Betty & Barney sitting on the couch, Pebbles on the floor, as well as Bamm-Bamm, who is holding Dino with one finger, with the Flintstones logo on top of the case. The back of the case has the cast dancing in pairs—Betty & Barney, Wilma & Fred, Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm. When you open the case once, you will a breakdown of disc one on the left side and a breakdown of disc two on the right side. The breakdowns feature all the episodes and special features on each disc. A nice photo and a cool trivia blurb are also printed on each breakdown. When you open the case another time, you get to the 4 discs and the breakdowns of discs three and four.

Disc one features episodes 1-6 of season four and both commentaries. Disc two has episodes 7-12 and the first bonus feature. Disc three has episodes 13-18 and the last bonus feature. Disc four is double sided - side A has episodes 19-22, side B has episodes 23-26. On the discs, there are photos of different characters with the newest addition--Pebbles. Disc one has a photo of Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm playing instruments, disc two has Barney & Fred in their Water Buffalo hats; disc three has a photo of Wilma & Betty in sunglasses in their bathing suits lying on beach chairs. Disc four has no pictures, since it is double sided. The other three discs have a nice light blue setting in the background like the case. Inside the case a nice little collectible litho cel is available. See for details.

Menu Design and Navigation:

The menu screen this season might just be the best one! It is an animated menu with the entire cast. The “Meet the Flintstones” theme is playing in the background. It loops, too. The menu screen consists of “Play,” “Episodes,” “Special Features,” and “Languages” from left to right. Languages have the option for spoken languages in English and subtitles in English, French and Spanish. The episodes section has the list of episodes on the disc, when you highlight one episode; a photo from the episode is shown on a mini-screen, each episode screen on each disc is different; very creative.

Video and Audio Quality:

The video quality is very good. This is from the early ‘60s, so it is impressive on how it looks. There are a bit of dusty areas, but that is expected. The audio, however is much better than previous sets. Each episode seems to be unedited and in 25:20 or so range per episode. The little teaser scene before the opening credits is also included in every episode. Like the previous sets (and most of the other Warner TV-DVDs), there are no chapters or scene selections, which I find very strange.

Special Features:

The special features are back in style. The last set was a little down from the previous seasons, but this set is on par with those. On disc one we have two episode audio commentaries on two key episodes—“Ann-Margrock Presents” and “Little Bamm-Bamm.” Hanna-Barbera historian Earl Kress and animation writers Paul Dini and Mark Evanler give their insights on these two memorable episodes. They even talk about the opening teaser, which is nothing more than a scene from later in the episode.

The next special feature is on disc two. It is called "Hanna-Barbera’s Legendary Musical Director: Hoy Curtin." It runs about 7:03. Interviewed are: Fred Siebert (Former H-B President), Jon Burlingame (Film Music Historian), Richard Kaufman (Conductor/Music Supervisor), Earl Kress (Writer/Animation Historian), Steve Carnelli (Guitarist for H-B), and Tom Worrall (Chief Arranger H-B). They talk about how good the underscore and everything the late Hoyt Curtin did to the show and all the other H-B shows he worked on. He was a music mastermind. It is a nice little tribute to a wonderful man. Hoy Curtin—Sept. 9, 1922-Dec. 3, 2000.

The next special feature is on disc three, an 8 minutes and 32 seconds featurette called "The Flintstones: One Million Years Ahead of Its Time." Interviewed are: Fred Siebert, Iwao Taka Moto (Layout Artist H-B), Scott Shaw! (Cartoonist), Jerry Beck (Animation/Historian), Willie Ito (Layout Artist H-B), Tony Benedict (Writer H-B), and Jerry Eisenberg (Layout Artist H-B). This is another wonderful and interesting feature. The Flintstones were ahead of their time, as most cartoons never did 30 minute episodes. They did about two or three 7 minute shorts instead. That is just one thing they mentioned! Listen to them for more info!

There are also Warner Bros. animated series trailers on disc four side B. Trailers for The Yogi Bear Show, Huckleberry Hound Show, Looney Tunes Golden Collection Vol. 3, Looney Tunes Movie Collection, Tom & Jerry Spotlight Collection Vol. 2, and Scooby-Doo In Where’s My Mummy?

Final Comments:

Again, another great set. The set is a little better than season three because of more bonus material. Warner Home Video has announced a March 2006 date for season 5. Season 6 should be out by next fall I would think. After that let’s hope all the other spin-offs and variations of The Flintstones also come out on DVD. If you have not started your collection, please do so. If you have, then season 4 is a must to go along with the first three years.

Final Numbers (out of 5 stars - How our point system works)

Video Quality: 4.5/5
Audio Quality: 4.5/5
Special Features: 4.5/5
Menu Navigation/Design: 5/5
Overall: 4.5/5
