Working It Out aired from August until December 1990 on NBC.

A romantic comedy about the mating dance between 2 divorced , single
parents; conservative , uptight Sarah (Jane Curtin) and easygoing
professional photographer David (Stephen Collins). Each was quite
content with the single life and not thinking of serious dating until
they met one night at a Manhattan cooking class( the kind populated
mostly by singles looking for mates). there, across the linguine ,
their eyes met and a stop-and-go courtship began. Sarah's best friend
Andy ( Mary Beth Hurt0 told her men were not interested with women
with small children, and David's pal Stan 9 David Garrison) advised
him to avoid the same. But to no avail. Sarah's 9 year old daughter
Molly ( Kyndra Joy Casper) was regularly seen, but David's 2 older
daughters were away at college and probably missed this short-lived
series altogether.

Jane Curtin, Stephen Collins In A New Comedy Of Romance
By Jonathan Storm, Inquirer Staff Writer

The leading candidate for this TV season's truth-in-titling award
premieres tonight at 9 on Channel 3. Working It Out is not just the
show's name. It's what producers ought to be doing frantically if they
hope to make this series even close to fresh.

Created by Kate & Allie's Bill Persky, starring Jane Curtin from that
show and Stephen Collins from Tattinger's and co-starring David
Garrison (Steve Rhoades in Married . . . With Children) and the
well-respected Mary Beth Hurt, Working It Out has plenty of expert
hands. Now all it needs is a few new ideas.

Curtin is a single mom with a little girl at home; Collins a single
dad whose kids are in college. Tonight they meet in a cooking class.
As the weeks pass, we have been promised, they will fall in love and
eventually get married.

The actors mesh well and some scenes are funny, but there is an eerie
sense of deja vu. Curtin is a cross between Ann Romano from One Day at
a Time and her old character, Allie Lowell. Collins has an awful lot
of Bob Barsky, Allie's husband, mixed with his old character, Nick

The folks in the cooking class remind you of Dear John's therapy
group. Garrison, who plays Collins' pal, is a composite of every
sitcom's best guy- friend. We've seen Curtin's across-the-hall
neighbor 100 times before. In tonight's pilot she is played by Randy
Graff; maybe when Hurt takes over the role in the second episode,
she'll bring something new.

Working It Out eventually will land in the cushy 8:30 p.m. Saturday
slot, where the pleasantly homogenized show may cruise for years on
automatic pilot.

Tonight's broadcast is one of three planned for the debut episode,
part of the network's effort to give viewers lots of chances to catch
its new programs. The next showing will be at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 8. No
need to make a note, however. You've already seen this show many
