What a Country aired from September 1986 until May 1987 in first-run syndication.
Real-life Russioan immigrant Yakov Smirnoff starred in this series
about resident aliens hoping to become American citizens. The series
was set in Los Angeles where young Taylor Brown ( Garrett M. Brown)
taught a night school course to help immigrants pass the American
citizenship test. The members of his class were Nikolai (Yakov
Smirnoff) an effervescent Russian cab driver; Laslo ( George Murdock),
a grumpy retired Hungarian physician; Ali ( Vijay Amritraj), a
Pakistani who took everything quite literally; Robert( Harry waters,
Jr.), the pretentious son of a deposed African king; Maria ( Ada
Maris), the sexy housekeeper for a wealthy Beverly Hills family;
Victor ( Julian Reyes), a young Hispanic lady-killer in love with
Maria; and Yung Hi(Leila Hee Olsen), an incredibly shy and senstive
Chinese girl. Joan Courtney (Gail Strickland) was the rather pushy
principal of the school (replaced by Bud McPhearson played by Don
Knotts in early 1987). Stories revolved around their problems with
American language and customs as well as the ways in which they
related to each other.
What a Country was adapted from the British series Mind Your Language.
