HOGAN'S HEROES was the popular situation comedy that ran on CBS from 1965 until 1971. The series starred Bob Crane as Colonel Bob Hogan, an inmate at a World War II Prisoner-of-War camp (Stalag 13). Rounding out the talented cast are Werner Klemperer as the short-tempered but easily fooled Colonel Wilhelm Klink, John Banner as Sgt. Hans Schulz, often privy to what Hogan's gang is up to but normally keeps quiet, and rounding out Hogan's Heroes is Robert Clary as LeBeau, Richard Dawson as Newkirk, Ivan Dixon and Kinch and Larry Hovis as Carter. And now you can own the classic fourth season on DVD from Paramount Home Entertainment!

Memorable Episodes / Notable Guest Stars:

Memorable episodes this season include: "Clearance Sale at the Black Market" in which it appears the bumbling Schultz may be shipped off to the Russian front. "To The Gestapo With Love" in which three beautiful German girls arrive at Stalag 13, but they are spies. "The Missing Klink" in which Hogan's scheme to kidnap General Burkhalter goes awry. "Up In Klink's Room" in which Hogan must somehow get himself hospitalized so that he can get top-secret information. "The Witness" in which Hogan is stunned to learn that the Germans are planning to send him home. And "Happy Birthday, Dear Hogan" is the one in which Hogan celebrates his birthday.

Guest stars this season include Sigrid Valdis, Leon Askin, Doris Singleton, Gavin McLeod, Noam Pitlik, Alan Oppenheimer, Bernard Fox, Marj Dusay, Ruta Lee, Howard Caine, Alice Ghostley, Vito Scotti, Barbara Babcock and more.

The overall packaging seems to be smaller than previous releases, with two discs per slip sleeve case, unlike before, where it was individual. I say it's a smart idea to make the boxes more compact. The main art is in a nice shade of blue and features large cropped photos of Schultz, Hogan and Klink with the rest of the men underneath. The back of the box features several color photos from the episodes as well as a nice description of the series.

On the first slip sleeve cover it's a cropped photo of Klink and Schultz riding a motorcycle. The second cover features Hogan and Klink. There are two discs per case, so four discs in all. Disc 1 features Schultz and Klink and episodes 1-7. Disc 2 features, again, Schultz and Klink, and contains episodes 8-14. Case 2, Disc 3 features Hogan and Klink and episodes 15-20 and finally Disc 4 features Hogan and Schultz and contains episodes 21-26.

Menu Design and Navigation:

The main menu is similar to that of Season 3 in which it appears like gates are opening. When they open you can see a list of the episodes, plus a Play All feature. On top of the episodes list are video clips of the series. The sound of drums, like marching, is playing.

Video and Audio Quality:

The video appears to be in very good condition. The audio also appears to be better than before, more clear, and audible. Chapter skips are available and it appears the episodes are uncut, each running a good 25 minutes in length.

Special Features:

Unlike the early seasons, there are NO special features on this season's set! What a huge disappointment!

Final Comments:

Paramount does a really good job. I love their cover art choices for their releases and overall, it's just a job well done. I like the fact that the set is smaller and more compact, although I wouldn't mind them going even more compact, making TV show sets like movie boxes and putting the discs in just one case with a pamphlet telling us the episodes. It would make storing them much easier. Other than NO special features (get back on the ball, Paramount!) it was a great set, so buy it!
