Life, love and comedy collide again for the sexiest and the most sophisticated ‘girlfriends’ in Los Angeles! That must mean the hit sitcom Girlfriends, with the fifth season now available on DVD for the first time from CBS DVD with all 22 fabulous & zany episodes in a 3-disc set. Girlfriends stars Tracee Ellis Ross as Joan, Golden Brooks as Maya, Persia White as Lynn, Jill Marie Jones as Toni and Reggie Hayes as William.

Memorable Episodes / Notable Guest Stars:

Some memorable episodes include the season premiere “L.A. Bound,” where Joan tries to confess her feelings for William, but knocks on the wrong door and winds up on the run from a crazed lesbian who thinks that Joan stole her girlfriend. In “Maybe Baby,” Toni repeatedly tries to seduce Todd when he returns to L.A. for her three-month check-up. In the first of two-part episode, “The Mother of All Episodes,” Joan's mother makes a surprise visit and constantly criticizes her, particularly about anything regarding her decision to open the restaurant. Then in part two, “When Hearts Attack,” Joan believes that she has had a heart attack, although the doctor insists that the occurrence was only an arrhythmia and then Joan's mother explains that she did not sleep with William. In “Porn to Write,” with her bills piling up, Maya is forced to consider a job writing for a porn publisher (which already employs Lynn). In “Wedding on the Rocks,” after Darnell reveals that he has failed to get a band for his wedding (which is just two days away), Maya recommends that he hire Lynn's band. And in the season finale, “...with a Twist,” Following Darnell's drunken love declaration, Maya enlists the help of Joan and William as she plans to break up his wedding. However, she soon has second thoughts.

Recurring stars this season include Shawn Harrison as Peaches, Khalil Kain as Darnell Wilkes, Malik Yoba as Brock Harris, Saul Williams as Sivad, Tanner Scott Richards as Jabari Wilkes, Jason Pace as Dr. Todd Garrett, and Keesha Sharp as Monica Charles Brooks.

One time guest stars for this season include JoMarie Payton, Demond Wilson, Reverend Al Sharpton, Lauren Stamile, James Avery, Penn Jillette, Cindy Williams, Mo’nique, Joan Pringle, Jenifer Lewis and Dawn Wells.

The main box is once again a snap case and features artwork of the four girlfriends and William with a nice white/red color scheme. The back of the box features a shot of the each of the girls and William once again (different poses this time) as well as a description of the series. Inside the case are the discs of course, but inside the packaging panels we have disc-by-disc breakdowns, including episode titles, airdates and a brief episode description. The discs themselves are silver in color (very plain) and feature the show logo with episode titles on the bottom. Disc 1 contains Episodes 1-8. Disc 2 contains Episodes 9-15. Disc 3 contains Episodes 16-22.

Menu Design and Navigation:

The menu is very nice and similar in style to previous sets. However, on disc one before you get to the Main Menu, you have an option to go watch Previews or go to the Main Menu. The previews are for Charmed, CBC Crime Drama DVDs, Everybody Hates Chris and Soul Food. The main menu has the same artwork as the cover art in a red background. On the right side, there is a scrolling set of video clips in a reel type form, just like the last few sets. The theme song is playing in the background and it loops when finished. There is a "Play All" option, which plays all of the episodes and there is an "Episodes" section. The "Episodes" selection takes you to a sub-menu where you see a list of the episodes to choose (episode number and title). We also have “Set Up,” where we can choose either English 5.1 audio or English Stereo audio.

Video and Audio Quality:

The video is in widescreen again, like it should be, and it probably has never looked better unless you watched it in HD. The audio is also perfect and sounds good. We get 6 chapter stops for each episode and each episodes is just around 20:55 minutes in length, so there is no need to make an episode runtime lists, because they are all within seconds of each other. 20:54-20:57 is the norm, but the first episode on the last disc runs 20:35. As was the case with the other sets, there is a disclaimer on the back of the box saying, “Some episodes may be edited from original broadcast. Music has been changed for this home entertainment version.” I have no idea what, though. On previous sets it said “some music,” now it says just “music,” so maybe more is edited out here? I’m just guessing. I never really watched the show before I got the third season DVD. If you know, please post on our feedback link below. Reader Roddric Shropshire helped us on the third season DVD with music edits, so thanks to him. We didn’t get any updates for the fourth season DVD.

Special Features:

Seasons 2 and 3 had extras, but like season one and four we get nothing on this season five set. What a shame! Some interviews, bloopers or audio commentaries have got to be on this set. Have a “Dress the Gorgeous Golden Brooks” game or something CBS!

Final Comments:

It has only been three months since the last set and CBS DVD is giving us season five on DVD already! Three more seasons to go and then we are finished with our girlfriends on DVD! You can still watch the spin-off series The Game on The CW Friday nights at 8:30pm ET/PT if you’re missing Girlfriends. Girlfriends can still be seen in syndication on BET and WE tv. I am not happy again we had no special features on this set, CBS DVD really is cheap, but again at least we are getting the episodes on DVD. Go and pick-up this fifth season DVD because you’ll fall in love with this charming and quite frankly stunning looking show!
