The popular UPN (now CW) sitcom is finally available on DVD! After seven seasons on the air, relive every first moment of the series. GIRLFRIENDS debuted on UPN in 2000 and it has been a staple on Monday nights since. The sitcom stars Tracee Ellis Ross as Joan Clayton, Golden Brooks as Maya, Jill Marie Jones as Toni, Persia White as Lynn and Reggie Hayes as William.

Memorable Episodes / Notable Guest Stars:

Some memorable episodes include "Toe Sucking" in which Toni dates a toe-sucker and Joan celebrates her 29th birthday. "One Night Stand?" in which Joan has is pressured to have a one-night stand after admitting to not having had sex in a year. "Girlfrenzy" is the one in which Maya and Toni get into an argument that ends up driving a wedge between the girlfriends. "I Pity the Fool" in which Joan grows tired of clingy Marcus and plans to break up with him. "Pregnant Pause" in which Joan has a pregnancy scare. "Fried Turkey" is the one in which Joan finds herself alone on Thanksgiving. "Friends, Colleagues, Brothers" in which Joan becomes fed up with the "boys club" mentality at work. "Diss-Regard" is the one in which Maya checks into the hospital to undergo surgery for the removal of a fibroid tumor. "The Burning Vagina Monologues" is the one in which Toni cheats on Greg with Clay and winds up contracting Chlamydia. Finally, "Jamaic-up" is the one in which the girls go to Jamaica to cheer up Toni.

Memorable guest stars this season include Jason Winston George, Rodney Van Johnson, Flex Alexander, Rhonda Ross Kendrick, Kelsey Grammer, Sherri Saum, Dondre T. Whitfield, Cee Cee Michaela, Shar Jackson, Christopher Daniel Barnes, Phil Morris, Sinbad and Terrell Davis.

The main box is a snap case (like a regular movie) and features a great shot of the four leads on the cover. The back of the box features a shot of the girls plus William as well as a nice description of the series. Inside the box are episode titles, airdates and a brief episode description. The discs themselves are silver in color and feature the show logo. Disc 1 contains episodes 1-6. Disc 2 contains episodes 7-12. Disc 3 contains episodes 13-18. Disc 4 contains episodes 19-22.

Menu Design and Navigation:

The menu is very nice. The main menu pops up immediately with a shot of all of the four girls (looks exactly like the cover art). On the right hand side there is a scrolling set of video clips in black and white and a purple/red hue. There is a "Play All" option, which plays all of the episodes and there is an "Episodes" section. The "Episodes" selection takes you to a sub-menu where you see a list of the episodes to choose from. The theme song loops in the background.

Video and Audio Quality:

Not much to really get into, but the audio is presented in Dolby Digital stereo surround. Although on the back of the box, it says, "Some music has been changed for this home entertainment version." Being as I have never watched the show, I personally cannot fill in the blanks of what might be missing. Other than that, the audio is fine and the video is fantastic, as the show is only seven years old. I also have to say that the episodes are likely uncut, seeing as how 21 minutes is the norm for sitcoms these days.

Special Features:

There is nothing extra on this set unfortunately. Seeing this show is still in production, it baffles me why CBS/Paramount did not try for at least audio commentaries--shame on them.

Final Comments:

Paramount did a fine job with this release! Other than some music substitution, which I am not sure how much was done, this set is fine. I just hope they did not remove actual scenes because of music, as they did on the Family Ties set. I also have to say, having never really seen a full episode of Girlfriends, it was a very funny show. The leads play off each other well and it is funny. I think fans will be disappointed, as there are no special features. Something many Paramount sets seem to lack, which is very disappointing. I do have to say I like the snap case. It is very compact and easier to store than those huge boxes with individual cases for each disc. As nice as that is, I am starting to prefer the snap cases. I see that Paramount is starting to go that route (upcoming Family Ties, Sabrina, Bosom Buddies also have it) and I applaud them for it. I wish all of the studios would go this way. Other than that, I definitely encourage all fans to go out and pick this up!
