One of TV's funniest shows is back again on DVD. Ellen DeGeneres is back for the second season of the Emmy-Award winning ABC sitcom, ELLEN. Ellen DeGeneres stars as Ellen Morgan, a mildly neurotic single gal whose mouth often gets her in trouble. Also starring in Season Two are Arye Gross as Adam, Joely Fisher as Paige and David Anthony Higgins as Joe, her wacky co-worker. In this season, Ellen flirts with her dentist, masquerades as an exercise trainer, competes on AMERICAN GLADIATORS and goes on endless dates. This set features all 24 episodes from the acclaimed second season.

The series is now officially called ELLEN. For season one, the show was originally called THESE FRIENDS OF MINE.

Memorable Episodes / Notable Guest Stars:

ELLEN: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON welcomes many memorable guest stars, such as cameos by Bob Saget, Harry Shearer, Mary-Kate Olsen, Patrick Warburton (SEINFELD) and Kathy Najimy (VERONICA'S CLOSET). The second season boasts many memorable episodes that include the season premiere "The Dentist," in which Ellen develops a crush on her dentist; "Saint Ellen," in which Ellen goes on a volunteering rampage; "The Thirty-Minute Man," in which Ellen learns her new beau is a pizza delivery guy; "The Note," in which Ellen spies on her reading group to find out who dislikes her; "The Toast," in which Ellen unintentionally breaks up her brother and his bride-to-be at their rehearsal dinner; "Mrs. Koger," in which Ellen is convinced that her confrontational tirade killed a grouchy old neighbor; "The Apartment Hunt," in which Ellen tries to help Audrey find a new apartment - the further away, the better; "The Spa," in which Paige convinces Ellen to join a health spa, but the arduous routine strains their friendship; "Guns 'N Ellen," in which Ellen becomes obsessed with safety after her apartment is robbed; "Gladiators," in which Ellen becomes a contestant on AMERICAN GLADIATORS, and woos gladiator Nitro; "Three Strikes," in which Ellen is forced to live with her parents again after being arrested and the second season finale, parts one and two of "Thirty Kilo Man" in which Ellen gets back together with the pizza man, but she is suspicious of his new career.

The cover art is the same design as season one's box, but features updated pictures to note the cast changes (Paige and Joe replace Holly and Anita) as well as a different color background (season one was orange, season two is yellow). Each of the three discs included in Season 2 are located in individual disc cases which boast the same design as the cover. The actual discs are yellow in color with the ELLEN logo. All three discs are the same design and each disc lists the episodes that are on that disc.

Menu Design and Navigation:

The menu screen is easy to navigate. It features virtually the same design as season one and follows the pattern of the cover art for the main box design. The theme song plays in the background and loops. You have a "play all" feature as well as an episode selection feature that takes you to another menu that lists the episodes and you can pick the episode you want to watch. Each episode runs approx. 22 minutes in length.

Video and Audio Quality:

The video is good, as well as the audio. The audio is nice and crisp in stereo! No complaints in that department. It has closed captioning but no subtitles, either in English or Spanish or any language for that matter.

Special Features:

The special features on this set are sparse. Episodes "The Trainer," and "Mrs. Koger," boasts commentary from cast members Joely Fisher and David Anthony Higgins, but that's all of the special features on this set. A&E should have done a bit more. I know there had to be some bloopers out there; after all, Ellen is hilarious.

Final Comments:

In conclusion, the quality is great for the audio and video; the overall design is simple and effective. It's a very nice set for fans of ELLEN to own. Although there are very few special features, there are two cast commentaries included, which are absolute pluses for a set, in my own opinion. Overall, good job on the part of A&E and I know I am definitely looking forward the last three seasons to be released on DVD.

Final Numbers (out of 5 stars):

Video Quality: 4.5/5
Audio Quality: 4.5/5
Special Features: 4/5
Menu Design/Navigation: 5/5
Overall: 4.5/5
