Crumbs

TITLE: CRUMBS - ABC MID-SEASON 2006

Info:

Premiere Date: Thursday, January 12, 2006 (Touchstone Television)
Network: ABC
Time: Thursdays at 9:30 p.m.
Cast: Starring Fred Savage, Jane Curtin, William Devane, Eddie McClintock, Maggie Lawson and Reginald Ballard.

Introduction:

Family is enough to drive anyone a little crazy. Children keep secrets from their parents so they won't upset them, dads leave for other women, and moms try to run over dads with the car. Actually, that was the point when the Crumb family knew that Mom was crazy. Coming this mid-season to ABC is a sitcom that brings full laughs and nothing predictable happens along the way. The sitcom Crumbs is one of the funniest four-camera sitcoms to hit the airwaves in years. And it's coming to a television near you starting Jan. 12, airing Thursdays at 9:30/8:30 central only on ABC!

Cast Details:

"Crumbs" stars Fred Savage ("The Wonder Years") as Mitch Crumb, Jane Curtin (two-time Emmy Award winner for "Kate & Allie," "SNL," "3rd Rock from the Sun") as Suzanne Crumb, William Devane ("Knots Landing," "24") as Billy Crumb, Eddie McClintock as Jody Crumb, Maggie Lawson as Andrea Malone and Reginald Ballard as Elvis. Estranged brothers Mitch and Jody Crumb reunite in their small hometown to deal with their mother, Suzanne, who is being discharged from a psychiatric facility and has yet to discover that her ex-husband is about to have a baby with his new girlfriend. They have issues... major issues.

Central to everything is the dynamic between these two brothers: Mitch is the prodigal son, who is returning home after a failed Hollywood career, while Jody is the older brother who has stayed in the confines of their small New England town to run the family business. Together for the first time as adults, this family will have to stick by one another despite their combustible relationships.

Pilot Plot:

The pilot starts off with Suzanne calling her son in L.A., Mitch, by accident. And as soon as that happens, the fun begins. There is nothing predictable about this plot. There are quite a few surprises that I won't give away. Basically the plot of the pilot has Mitch coming back home after his Hollywood career as a writer has sort of failed. His mother Suzanne is being released from the psychiatric facility. And his father has remarried and is about to become a dad once again. His brother is working at the restaurant, which is the family business, and he certainly is a womanizer. Will the family find out why Mitch is really back? Will Suzanne continue to be crazy and will the family find out her secret at the psychiatric facility? And will the family find out Mitch's secret? Tune in to find out!

Analysis:

The plot of the pilot is hilarious and unpredictable. I loved every moment. This sitcom reminds me a lot of another ABC classic, Soap. Heck, that sitcom even had a Jodie (played by the great Billy Crystal). Though this Jody spells his name this way. I think this will become a big hit and I know people will love it. It is just plain funny and the plot is very interesting. There is even a bit of drama when Mitch & Jodie talk about their other brother, who died tragically. The cast is also an all-star one just like the '70s sitcom Soap. Fred Savage has grown up from his Wonder Years days and is truly great in the pilot. And after seeing Jane Curtin's performance in this pilot, she could rack up an Emmy nomination again for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. William DeVane of Knots Landing fame is hysterical as the wacky father who turns up in all sorts of places.

Conclusion:

I truly loved this pilot. Hopefully the quality continues in future episodes. The show should give ABC a big boost on Thursday nights. The competing sitcoms on NBC, Fox, and UPN will be all beaten by Crumbs in both the ratings and the quality of the show. This is one of the best sitcoms I've seen in many years. Like I said it feels like a 21st century "Soap" with the family being as dysfunctional as the cast of Married...With Children. If you like dysfunctional sitcoms, then this is for you. If you like funny stuff then this is for sure for you. This sitcom will just make you laugh after a rough and long day, as it doesn't go out to change the world, but will just make you cry until it hurts!

Final Numbers (out of 5 stars):

Watchability: 5/5
Funniness: 5/5
Overall: 5/5
