Perhaps that's why the Farina episodes are out first. The Stack episodes will be the most popular streamed episodes, so I've a feeling they're either remastering or adding updates to solved cases and blurring out the number for the hotline.

To rebroadcast/stream old episodes responsibly, they need to provide updates and information on how to contact authorities regarding tips on a case.

I wonder how they'll do the updates? That seems to be the main focus for the Stack episodes according to the press release. They'll have thorough updates. Its stated they'll have updates but not provide closure on the cases. Will it be like Lifetime having a lady's voice say the update or some text thing with news videos? Hell get Virginia Madsen back just for that. Shes the only former host thats alive today. How much can that add to an episodes length now? It'd be nice to have updates on these old cases/stories. Maybe it'll revive the show for a new run one day? I don't get Netflix. I just haven't signed up. Does Amazon Canada have Amazons streaming service?

We actually just got it this week. But Unsolved Mysteries is not on there yet. we don't have the same back catalogue that the US Amazon Prime Video has.

"In fact, some episode updates are brand new, never before seen or broadcast on TV." (http://www.thewrap.com/unsolved-myst...2017-new-year/)

Reminds me of years after Reno 911 finished (one of my favorites as well), the original pilot was released. It was a good gift for some of the die hard fans.

Fantastic news, if the old episodes do go up - if they really do that, I will be happy to praise Cosgrove/Meurer for once.

Thumbs up

This is great news! No longer shall we have to watch bad quality VHS rips!

(although I still appreciated that people made those available for viewing, given that is all we had at the time...so still, my thanks to those guys).

Default Why now?

Hasn't Cosgrove-Meurer been saying all this time that they can't release or otherwise make available NBC episodes because of licensing restrictions? Something about not being able to get the okay from all the people interviewed in the hundreds of segments?

I had assumed that the episodes that made it into the Farina redux were just a smattering of the ones for which they were able to secure the approval/permission of the family members and police officials involved in re-creating the events (whenever possible).

If the Stack recordings are going to be released for streaming, episode by episode, does this mean that all this hooplah about restriction (and banning from the forbidden site) has all just disappeared?

Call me a Debbie Downer, but for some reason I have serious reservations about getting my hopes up a bout ever streaming the original episodes.

(though a tiny voice inside my heart is cooing with excitement and hope)

What do y'all think?

Generally speaking, I believe this has always been about the money.

I believe the "licensing" and "guild" restrictions you bring up here are the specific reasons CMP has continually pursued and removed UM content from the free video streaming websites in the past couple of years.

I don't believe that is an issue here, because these streaming services are only available to paying subscribers. The producers, writers, and perhaps actors are probably going to receive some sort of compensation, either a one-time payout due to this deal, or perhaps on-going residuals based on the streaming viewership.

I also don't think that UM would need to go and get permission to re-air the segments. I think it would be the other way around; the actual family members or police officials would have to approach UM to get them taken off the air, either voluntarily or by some legal action. I'm not recalling any specific segments, but I am sure I have read that this was the case with a handful.

Again, this is not a news broadcast, but I'm pretty sure that once you consent to being interviewed, the burden would be on you to somehow retract it, rather than the interviewer needing to re-secure your consent over and over again.

I have never seen a UM contract, nor do I know for sure that they even existed with the interviewees or family members, so that could obviously change or re-enforce my opinion. It would be awesome if Sheila Kimmel for example could/would shed some light on this.

I am with you here. I'm afraid to get my hopes up too high, but I do feel there's a good chance we could get the bulk of the RS segments, as well as some unreleased ones. If that's the case, I'd consider it a major win for us viewers. 20-30 lost segments is certainly better than the 900+ currently "lost"

I agree with this being a total cash grab on the part of CM. But, hey, apparently someone was willing to shell out the cash in order to secure the digital rights for the show... so I feel pretty good about this. I think it's going to happen. If you have Amazon, you can already stream some of the Farina stuff (which I know is so not the same as the Stack versions, but it's better than nothing... I just wish there was a way to edit out the heavy metal music...)
