Cool August Burns Red--'Messengers'

Another metalcore band whose members shared a common faith in Christianity was August Burns Red, from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. But their point was not to evangelize, they said. In fact, many bands who identified as having Christian members were averse to proselytizing from the stage, unlike in years past. They were interested in simply providing good music for fans with positive lyrics.

The band started in 2003 and released their debut album, 'Thrill Seeker' in 2005, with a rotating lineup. The band's members in 2007 included lead vocalist Jake Luhrs, JB Brubaker on guitar,
Brent Rambler also on guitar, bassist Dustin Davidson, and Matt Greiner on drums.

The album's tracks included "The Truth Of a Liar", "Composure", "Back Burner", and "Redemption".

Composure

“Shake it off
Pick yourself up,” they say
Your life fell apart in your hands
And you've got the scars
To prove it
It's not the first time
And they're getting deeper

Pull it together
Button up your shirt
Roll down those sleeves
Don't let them see how you've coped

It’s not the first time
And they’re getting deeper

More and more your demeanor looks like quicksand
More and more your demeanor looks like quicksand

It seems like you’re giving up
Giving up on everything you worked for
It seems like you’re giving up
Giving up on everything you worked for

It's pulling you under
It's gripping around your throat
It's pulling you under
It's gripping around your throat

It seems like you’re giving up
On everything
It seems like you’re giving up
On everything
It's pulling you under
It's pulling you under

Life can be overwhelming
But don't turn your back on the strongest crutch
You've ever had, you’ve ever had
They have always been there
To brace your fall

Wave goodbye to the past
You've got your whole life to lead
Wave goodbye to the past
You've got your whole life to lead
Wave goodbye to the past
You've got your whole life to lead
Wave goodbye to the past
You've got your whole life to lead
(You've got your whole life to lead)
(You've got your whole life to lead)
It's time to gain some ground

Cool August Burns Red

The album was called "Messengers", but the band was not about to preach, the message would bring itself.

Back Burner

Convictions
To the back burner
Convictions
To the back burner
Remembering what's really important isn't so important after all

Gather all your possessions
Smile cause you've got it all
Gather all your possessions
Smile cause you've got it all
Smile cause you've got it all
Smile cause you've got it all

Still that empty feeling
Won't go away
Still that empty feeling
Won't go away
Your puzzle's missing one very essential piece
(And I know you'll) keep looking in all the wrong places until it's too late (until it’s too late)

Slip on the ice again
When did you become so cold?
Living for the here and now never made so much, so much sense
Slip on the ice again
When did you become so cold

You think you've got all the time in the world, but this could all be ending...
Now!

How far down will you go
Before it's too late?
Slipping on the ice again
You've become so cold

Lucky for you rock bottom is in sight
Lucky for you rock bottom is in sight
Your wake up call is set for now
And the trail you have followed
Has come all the way to the end

I hope you survive
Survive the crash

Cool August Burns Red--'Thrill Seeker'

The band's debut album 'Thrill Seeker' featured such tracks as "Your Little Suburbia Is In Ruins", "Speech Impediment", "Too Late For Roses", and "The Seventh Trumpet".

Your Little Suburbia Is In Ruins

Open those eyes.
Wake from peace.
Orders are some favorite color.
Same old same old is their battle cry.
Why don't we keep searching for a new flavor?
Our hearts have become a routine.
Worthy kings have broken backs for nothing.
Unless we cherish all with pride,
the lines on our face will turn into canyons of sorrow instead of hope.
They didn't die from the cold without but they died from the cold within.
And I just can't stop denying that our brothers are in miserable pain.
Stop short.
Lend a hand and break the chains of regularity that you lean so closely upon.
Your little Suburbia is in ruins.
Tear down all the assumptions you hold, for I guarantee they are false.
Sometimes the best feeling may be the one that kills.

"Barbarian"

Chaos brings order.
Who will you allow to lead you blindly until the end?
You're like a little girl with a stupid crush.
We all sing glory.
We all choke ourselves with our own ignorance.
There is so much more to life than your stupid desires.
Nothing is everything, and everything is something.
Confused? Troubled?
Finding the meaning is looking through the vivid transparencies.
Dance the night away because tomorrow,
we will look back and talk about good times now gone forever.
Trace lines around the image of your choice.
Dance until the end, my friend, and find joy in every living thing.
Optimism is not a choice, it's a belief.

Cool Underoath--'Define the Great Line'

Stepping back to 2006 for a moment, Christian crossover metalcore band Underoath released their fifth album 'Define the Great Line'. Unlike other bands whose Christian members "crossed over" to some measure of success and recognition on secular labels with understated and implicit lyrics, Underoath made their faith more explicit and direct with addressing God frequently. Would less-churched fans be open to this? Apparently it worked for Underoath. The album was very successful and the band won much respect.

The title of the album, according to keyboardist Christopher Dudley, comes from "defining that line for yourself between becoming the man or the woman that you want to be and the man or the woman other people want you to be."

The album featured songs such as "In Regards To Myself", "A Moment Suspended In Time", "Writing On the Walls", and "You're Ever So Inviting".

In Regards To Myself

Wake up! Wake up! My God!
This is not a test!
And it's not too late to come clean
Get it off your chest
So steady your hand before your face and concentrate
There's got to be some stable ground
Left to walk on

So tear another page from the book
Are you asleep or just alone?
Clear this room from your lungs

Pull yourself together
Pull yourself together, man
Pull yourself together
Pull yourself together

On your back,
You're sleeping in a bed of shame
Let the light breath some new life into this room
It's what keeps you coming back
Made up of insatiable taste
Bury your head in your hands
And sing into yourself

Oh!

Just what are you so afraid of?
What are you so afraid of?
You're staring truth in the face
So come on down
What are you so afraid of?

You're busy living now, aren't you?
You're busy making vows
You're coming unglued

Time is shorter than you know
I know the light is blinding to the naked eye
So why don't you take steps away from being alone?
I swear, it's not too late for you

It's all worth reaching for
It's all worth reaching for
It's all worth reaching for
The hand to pull you out
It's all worth reaching for
The hand to pull you out

Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!
And step outside your box
Wake up!

Cool Underoath

The band's members included bassist Grant Brandell, Spencer Chamberlain who handled lead vocals and additional rhythm guitars, the previously mentioned Christopher Dudley on keyboard and synthesizers, Aaron Gillespie on drums and providing clean vocals, Timothy McTague on lead guitars, backing vocals,
James Smith also on rhythm guitars and additional lead guitars.

What were "clean" vocals? In many metalcore and extreme metal bands, screeching, raspy vocals, often the norm, were labeled "dirty" vocals, while singing with a normal voice, often as backup vocals or secondary, without raspiness or screeching or screaming, were "clean" vocals.

A Moment Suspended In Time

Held captive, I'm a prisoner
In the back room where the water leaks and I'm oh, so cold
Command me on what to do, but we both know neither you or I are in control

There's nothing left for me here
I'm grabbing on to what's left of this hole.
It's all too real this can't be happening

Never again, ever again, will I say I'm OK
I'm scared of the fate that will become mine

No time to talk you know the drill

Under my desk this can't be it
I'm only dreaming, I've got to be dreaming
But I can't get up.
No time to talk, not this time, this is my place
This is where I arrange

It's so funny how we see things so clear when we have no time left to live

So lay back now and take it is
I won't say a word
I won't say anything

I can't believe how it feels
To stand here in this room
And feel like it's going to blow
I think we're all going to blow

I've got to be dreaming
We've got to be dreaming
Please don't wake me up
This is the end.

Is it okay if we can move on to more familiar bands? I'm sorry, but some of these aren't even recognizable to me at all.

Underoath was very popular over ten years ago. But we'll look at some other bands.

The reason why we focus on some of these seemingly "forgotten" bands is that there is a theme, or one of many, going on in 2007. Part of the cultural zeitgeist.

Never heard of Underoath, but can we do Evanescence at some point?

Cool Evanescence--'The Open Door'

In 2006, Evanescence returned with their sophomore album, 'The Open Door'.
The title was nearly appropriate, as bassist Will Boyd was averse to doing big tours and wanted instead to be close to his family. He was replaced by Tim McCord, formerly the guitarist for Revolution Smile to play bass.

Evanescence appeared to be one of those bands who prolonged the wait and create a sort of mystique in the process about themselves. Expectations were high on the band, and vocalist Amy Lee left a lot of questions about them. This was complicated further by members coming and going and returning. The album was finally released that fall with more symphonic and gothic elements in their sound.

The following song was written for Lee's former boyfriend Shaun Morgan of Seether, who had substance abuse problems at the time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RrA-R5VHQs

Call Me When You're Sober

Don't cry to me.
If you loved me,
You would be here with me.
You want me,
Come find me.
Make up your mind.

Should I let you fall?
Lose it all?
So maybe you can remember yourself.
Can't keep believing,
We're only deceiving ourselves .
And I'm sick of the lie,
And you're too late.

Don't cry to me.
If you loved me,
You would be here with me.
You want me,
Come find me.
Make up your mind.

Couldn't take the blame.
Sick with shame.
Must be exhausting to lose your own game.
Selfishly hated,
No wonder you're jaded.
You can't play the victim this time,
And you're too late.

Don't cry to me.
If you loved me,
You would be here with me.
You want me,
Come find me.
Make up your mind.

You never call me when you're sober.
You only want it cause it's over,
It's over.

How could I have burned paradise?
How could I - you were never mine.

So don't cry to me.
If you loved me,
You would be here with me.
Don't lie to me,
Just get your things.
I've made up your mind.

The album went through a laborious process to be completed. Guitarist Terry Balsamo suffered a stroke, other band members did side projects, and above all, Amy Lee wished to not rush the process of finishing the album. Still, the album came out well. Lee explained, "All the things that happened were really inspiring, because it was frustrating ... But for me at least, every time we get really frustrated and you're hitting a wall and everything is chaos, it just makes the music that much better, because you have passion—even if it's negative. That's sometimes better, actually."

The album featured several singles including "Call Me When You're Sober", "Sweet Sacrifice", "Lithium", and "Good Enough".

Sweet Sacrifice

It's true, we're all a little insane
But it's so clear
Now that I'm unchained

Fear is only in our minds
Taking over all the time
Fear is only in our minds
But it's taking over all the time

You poor sweet innocent thing
Dry your eyes and testify
You know you live to break me
Don't deny sweet sacrifice

One day
I'm gonna forget your name
And one sweet day
You're gonna drown in my lost pain

Fear is only in our minds
Taking over all the time
Fear is only in our minds
But it's taking over all the time

You poor sweet innocent thing
Dry your eyes and testify
And oh you love to hate me, don't you, honey?
I'm your sacrifice

(I dream in darkness
I sleep to die
Erase the silence
Erase my life)

Do you wonder why you hate? (Our burning ashes
Blacken the day)
Are you still too weak to survive your mistakes? (A world of nothingness
Blow me away)

You poor sweet innocent thing
Dry your eyes and testify
You know you live to break me
Don't deny
Sweet sacrifice

The following song was sort a tribute to Kurt Cobain who wrote one of the popular tracks on Nirvana's 'Nevermind' album, but Lee explained it on more personal terms: "It's not literal about the drug for me, I've never taken lithium before. It's sort of a metaphor about numbness and happiness... it's me looking at happiness in a negative way because I've always been... kind of afraid to be happy. Like with the band and the art and everything else, it's always like I'm never letting myself break through into the happiness it seems like, because it's not cool or something. And describing happiness is lithium, it's like saying 'that's numbness, I won't be able to be an artist anymore if I'm happy', which is hilarious because that's just not true, I'm happy. So it's... this fight within the song of... 'do I do this and get out of here and get happy or do I wallow in it like I always do?' and it's cool because at the end of the song I say 'I'm going to let it go', like I am going to be happy."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJGpsL_XYQI

Lithium

Lithium, don't want to lock me up inside.
Lithium, don't want to forget how it feels without...
Lithium, I want to stay in love with my sorrow.
Oh, but God, I want to let it go.

Come to bed, don't make me sleep alone.
Couldn't hide the emptiness, you let it show.
Never wanted it to be so cold.
Just didn't drink enough to say you love me.

I can't hold on to me,
Wonder what's wrong with me.

Lithium, don't want to lock me up inside.
Lithium, don't want to forget how it feels without...
Lithium, I want to stay in love with my sorrow.

Don't want to let it lay me down this time.
Drown my will to fly.
Here in the darkness I know myself.
Can't break free until I let it go.
Let me go.

Darling, I forgive you... After all,
Anything is better than to be alone.
And in the end I guess I had to fall.
Always find my place among the ashes.

I can't hold on to me,
Wonder what's wrong with me.

Lithium, don't want to lock me up inside.
Lithium, don't want to forget how it feels without...
Lithium, ...stay in love with you.
I'm gonna let it go.

Good Enough

Under your spell again
I can't say no to you
Crave my heart and it's bleeding in your hand
I can't say no to you

Shouldn't let you torture me so sweetly
Now I can't let go of this dream
I can't breathe but I feel

Good enough
I feel good enough for you

Drink up sweet decadence
I can't say no to you
And I've completely lost myself, and I don't mind
I can't say no to you

Shouldn't let you conquer me completely
Now I can't let go of this dream
Can't believe that I feel

Good enough
I feel good enough
Its been such a long time coming, but I feel good

And I'm still waiting for the rain to fall
Pour real life down on me
'Cause I can't hold on to anything this good enough
Am I good enough for you to love me too?

So take care what you ask of me
'Cause I can't say no

After the release of their debut album, the story was rampant that Amy Lee was a Christian, though she and the rest of the band kept their faith low-key and wished not to capitalize on it, most likely in order to not be "typecast" as a Christian band. However, in 2004, Lee was composing music for the then-upcoming movie "The Lion, the Witch, And the Wardrobe", based on the popular "Chronicles Of Narnia" book series written by C.S. Lewis, which had a Christian allegory theme. The song "Lacrymosa" was written for the film but not included in the soundtrack. It was included on 'The Open Door', however.

The film's producers initially approached Lee for a small role. "They were like, 'Do you want to do a cameo?' And I was like, 'Hell yeah! Let me die. I want to be somebody who gets murdered.' So I don't think that's going to happen." The producers also rejected the song "Lacrymosa" due to it being too "dark" for the soundtrack.

Lacrymosa

Out on your own,
Cold and alone again.
Can this be what you really wanted, baby?

Blame it on me,
Set your guilt free.
Nothing can hold you back now.

Now that you're gone,
I feel like myself again.
Grieving the things I can't repair and willing...

To let you blame it on me,
And set your guilt free.
I don't want to hold you back now love.

I can't change who I am.
Not this time, I won't lie to keep you near me.
And in this short life, there's no time to waste on giving up.
My love wasn't enough.

And you can blame it on me,
Just set your guilt free, honey.
I don't want to hold you back now love.

In 2007, the band toured on the Family Values Tour with headliners Korn, Atreyu, Flyleaf, Hellyeah, and Trivium.

Weight Of the World

Feels like the weight of the world
Like God in heaven gave me a turn
Don't cling to me, I swear I can't fix you
Still in the dark, can you fix me?

Free fall, free fall, all through life

If you love me then let go of me
I won't be held down by who I used to be
She's nothing to me

Feels like the weight of the world
Like all my screaming has gone unheard
And oh, I know you don't believe in me
Safe in the dark, how can you see?

Free fall, free fall, all through life

If you love me then let go of me
I won't be held down by who I used to be

If you love me then let go of me
I won't be held down by who I was

If you love me then let go of me
I won't be held down by who I used to be
