Default Gen-TV Fall Preview

Previewing Gen-TV's Fall Schedule
---Network Launches Season October 1st

Gen-TV launches its 11th season on Tuesday, October 1st with the debut of two brand-new dramas; a reboot of "Medical Center" and a new procedural "CIA: New York" leading into returning favorite "Deadly Visions" which begins its fourth season in a new timeslot. This is a trend the network repeats much throughout its new season; veteran performers mixed with daring new series aimed at becoming American classics.

The network is launching 11 new series this season, including four limited-run series (what we would have once called a mini-series). They are from a broad range of genres; including 2 comedies, 5 dramas and 4 limited-run series. Here Hollywood Insider is proud to preview some of the major events you'll see this upcoming season on Gen-TV.

Favorites Saying Goodbye:

It will be a season of goodbyes for Gen-TV which is ending four long-running programs. Sure to be the highlight of these finales is the last season of "Making It Work", a relationship comedy entering its seventh season and wrapping up its reign as the Gen-TV's signature comedy. Starring Justin Long and Rashida Jones, this series was described in its first season as "a relationship comedy about a young couple, struggling to get through their first years of marriage and build a satisfying life, while dealing with their opinionated, brash and often embarrasing family members, friends and the pressures of trying to balance emerging careers." In the seasons since it has greatly expanded beyond that and became appointment television in an era when that usually doesn't exist. Quincy Jones, one of the series executive producers and father of Rashida said this when reflecting upon the series journey "It started off as this little comedy about an interracial couple that the network wasn't sure viewers would warm to." "Notes early on (from the network) were to tone down the race discussions" "but something magical happened, the show premiered and the network realized that this was not a show that wanted to preach at anybody or focus solely on race. This was a relationship comedy in which the couple happened to be from different races." "This fact would pop up on the show sporadically, but didn't ever feel like the driving force of the comedy." "Just like in life, it matters when it matters but doesn't come up everyday."

Early in its run, "Making It Work" was the networks highest-rated comedy and quickly found itself in the running for major award shows. It has won five Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards and a Peabody Award.

Also ending this season are three classic Gen-TV comedies; "Zendaya", a family sitcom starring youth sensation Zendaya Coleman ends its run after four seasons. That comedy debut to strong ratings but soon found itself with growing pains as the series star, at the time 19 no longer wanted to play a high school sophomore and lobbied producers to "allow me to act my age and grow up on-screen." Between the series first summer hiatus and its second season premiere, the character of Zendaya rapidly aged "In the first season Zendaya (the character) was a 17 year old high school sophomore and by the start of the second season, she was a 20 year old college freshmen." "She traded high school classrooms for college dorms and sorority parties." As the show aged and the character aged, so to did the storytelling and the network found itself confused because the family-friendly sitcom they picked-up was now being written for 21 and 22 year olds; eliminating the kid audience the series was designed for.

Two other favorites are ending their runs at four seasons, "Unlikely Family" and "Hart of Family", two family-comedies that were successful performers, but soon found themselves at odds with Gen-TV's development goals. Debuting at a time when Gen-TV comedy was focused on "sanitized family comedies in the style of ABC's TGIF classics, these series quickly found themselves the odd man out on Gen-TV as we started shifting our development towards comedies aimed at adult singles without children." "The surprise successes of shows like Selling Out, Ready To Wear and Kate & Ali shifted the parameters and the family style sitcoms were old hat."

Politics In Focus:

Like much of the country is right now, Gen-TV will be paying close attention to politics this season with several high-profile documentary and limited-run series focused on political issues. The most high profile of these is the documentary limited-series "American Loser" based on a best-selling book, it showcases "how Trump stole the election and became the worst president in American history; dividing a nation with hatred and disgusting rhetoric."

"If Hillary Had Won" is a stylish mini-series starring Diane Lane, that imagines what would have happened to the world if "Hillary Clinton had taken her rightful place as our nation's President." "A creative work of genius historical fiction, it delivers emotional highs and lows while contrasting the stark reality of our real life."

Another mini-series, "Maria's Quinceanera" is not outwardly focused on politics but as it focuses on a family of Mexican-Americans "it definitely doesn't ignore the political reality of Latinos in America today." Starring a star-studded cast headlined by America Ferrera "It touches on the issues of immigration and racism in small but meaningful ways."

Returning series "American Citizen" also focuses on many political issues as well. The plotline for the series is being kept under lock and key by Gen-TV, but past seasons have focused on immigration and deportation, human trafficking and drug smuggling.

Familiar Brands, New Faces:

Gen-TV has several new series premiering that are based on classic properties that are being given a new twist.

The previously mentioned "Medical Center" reboot takes the 1960's series into 2019 with Patricia Richardson starring as a veteran doctor, Dr. Pauline Locke tasked with teaching and mentoring several millennial doctors full of idealism and lacking in real world exposure. Joseph Gordon-Levitt co-stars as Dr. Joe Gannon, and serves as the primary antagonist to Dr. Locke.

The 1980's sitcom "Mr. Belvedere" gets a modern remake with new series "Ms. Belvedere" with Hayley Atwell taking on the role of Lynda Belvedere, a compassionate and sensitive housekeeper who quickly charms and changes the live of widowed millionaire Owen Charles and his three children. "It is a gender reversed version of the show that has many similarities to classic sitcoms like The Nanny or Who's The Boss" says Atwell.

The second season of returning comedy "Our Pet Dragon" shows that it has fully exercised itself from its past as a family comedy and is now aimed squarely at adult audiences. "What started as a wholesome children's sitcom with puppets quickly found its characters were funnier the more filthy they got to be." "The transition really took place when Gen-TV found that the ratings went up everytime our puppet characters cursed or used filthy language and that the primary audience watching was not 5-12 year old girls, but rather 16-25 year old males." "This got the network thinking about how to redevelop it and the series slowly moved to a later timeslot and got a bit more adult." "This transition is fully formed now and it is all about gross-outs, crude humor and sarcastic innendeudos now."

The second season of "Cafe Oddity", a freshmen success last season will see some new blood join the ranks as Whoopi Goldberg joins the cast in a series regular role and Cybill Shepherd joins as a recurring character.

The Big Hits Are Still Here:

No worries, Gen-TV still has all of your favorite shows as well. Returning hits include "Kate & Ali" and "Ready To Wear" launching their second seasons; "Deadly Visions" returning for its fourth; "Boston Blues" back with its steamier and sexier second season and "Selling Out" returning for its fourth.

Other returning favorites include "Every Other Weekend", returning for its fourth season; "The Boss Lady" returning for its third season, "Unemployed" returning for its third season, "Grounded" returning also for its third season and "Baker's Dozen", returning for its second season after undergoing extensive retooling and shifting its premise from a family sitcom to a romantic comedy with gay lead characters. Chris Colfer (Glee) joins the cast replacing departing cast members Alyson Hannigan and Maria Canals-Barrera.

Default Buzz Factor 2019-2020

Which New Shows Will Be Hits?
--Hollywood Insider ranks each of Gen-TV's new series

Hollywood Insider is proud to present its annual Buzz Factor report of Gen-TV's freshmen class of programs. Which series will be big success and which will be massive duds? Well, not everything can reach "Boston Blues" numbers, so here is our report on the class of shows premiering in the 2019-2020 season.

This year we're doing things a bit differently, instead of a complicated rating system we will simply rank them numerical from Least To Most Likely To Be Successful.

Gen-TV is premiering 11 new series this season, four of which are mini-series or limited run events. We are including those as well. Here is our rankings, based on responses to an audience poll of viewers conducted between July 2019 and August 2019 by Hollywood Insider readers.

1. 7th Heaven: According to responses from Hollywood Now, "7th Heaven" ranks as the #1 new series on Gen-TV that viewers are most likely to watch at least once. It ranked highly across all demographics, and was especially popular among Black Viewers and Highly Educated Viewers with at least a Bachelor's Degree. It has all the makings of a big success and of being a show that Gen-TV can air for many years to come.

This reboot of the 1990's drama that aired on the WB stars Gabrielle Union as a female reverend tasked with running the local church. It focuses on her professional life and her family life raising her four children and her marriage with her husband, a former basketball player who suffered a career-ending injury and is questioning his faith and belief in god, played by Michael Ealy.

2. Grand Jury: Surprisingly, "Grand Jury" ranked #2 with viewers as the show they'd most likely try out. This series doesn't boast a star cast or have well-known writers behind it, but does seem tailor-made for the masses. Each episode contains a dramatic courtroom scene, a passionate speech from the attorneys to the jury and a mystery element as the lawyers present their cases. It does have all the hallmarks of a quality drama, and is only a surprising choice as it lacks the name-power other series have.

3. American Loser: This political documentary ranked higher than anticipated, likely because many viewers of Gen-TV (and much of Hollywood Now's readership) are high educated liberals from the Eastern part of the country. So the demographics are skewed in its favor on this poll. It got high responses from viewers in mostly urban and suburban areas of the country and its lowest level of response was in the mid-western parts of the country and the southern half of the country.

4. CIA: New York: This by the books crime procedural is still in the process of casting a few main roles (which will debut on-screen in the later half of the season) but scored highly with viewers because of the familiar genre and the name power of series executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The cast of this series boasts name-actors in Mira Sorvino and Boris Kodjoe. It looks like a winner.

5. Medical Center: This reboot of the popular 1960's drama has Patricia Richardson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt headlining its cast and takes place in a setting intimately familiar to viewers; a medical hospital. We knew it would rank highly among our readers, but didn't expect it would be in the top 5.

6. Having Faith: This series ranked highest among Black Females, aged 25-45 and lowest among white males aged 12-20. Sporting Regina Hall as its leading lady only seems to help its position. Not much else is known about this series, other than its a spiritual drama about a female pastor (Hall) trying to restore the church she grew up in to its former glory and reconnecting with her estranged family.

7. Bless Your Heart: Given a prime timeslot sandwiched between Gen-TV two biggest comedies (Ready To Wear and Kate & Ali) is partly why this new comedy ranked within the top ten, but it's a dangerous sign that it has only come in at #7. Even more distressing for this series is the news that broke just today that the entire pilot has been scrapped and reshot as recently last month; firing several original actors and changing the format of the show. News just broke within the last seven hours (and until now wasn't even reported by Hollywood Insider) that rising star Cardi B has been tapped to serve as the new headlining star of this series. Her character is being rewritten to fit her, and is being changed from "a tough-talking liberal Jewish American Princess from New York" to a "hard-edged, rough around the edges Brooklyn Born wannabe rapper who marries a duty bound, southern gentleman from a established Georgia family and inherits his name and his deeply conservative and stiffer than stiff southern family." The show is now described as "a culture clash comedy featuring people from very different backgrounds having to live together and hopefully learn from each other and ultimately learn to love each other." The new series boasts a surprising Executive Producer in sitcom veteran Fran Drescher (The Nanny) and Cardi B herself will also be an Executive Producer.

8. Maria's Quinceanera: This limited-run event series is scheduled to run for six-weeks and boasts a star-studded cast including America Ferrera, Eva Longoria, Maria Conchita-Alonso and Rosie Perez. It has gotten huge marks from critics, but ranks 8th among viewers. Not shockling, it was most popular among Latino audiences and scored highest among Latino Females aged 30-45.

9. If Hillary Had Won: This is another series that scored well with critics but is leaving viewers cold. Perhaps political fatigue is an issue, or maybe nobody wants to think about a world where Hillary had won? We don't know, but things aren't looking good for this limited-run series.

10. American Family: A continuation of the "American Citizen" franchise not much is known about this mid-season drama. So far, only the fact that Laura Linney will headline it is known. She was cast as a replacement when Felicity Huffman was fired from Gen-TV following the college admissions scandal. Sources also confirm that Sarah Paulson has signed on for a role as well. It scored low with viewers across the board; likely because it hasn't gotten much exposure in the media yet as its nearly four or five months away from airing.

11. Ms. Belvedere: Things aren't looking bright for this reboot of the popular 1980's sitcom "Mr. Belvedere" as it scored the lowest ratings among our readers of any show Gen-TV is premiering this season. And yet, it had the largest amount of publicity of any of them as Gen-TV's marketing department has spent more money per capita on this series promotion than any other new series.

REVIEWS OF NEW YTN SERIES

THE AGENCY
Average media score: 75/100
High: 90 - "The Agency is one of the best new comedies of the season. The pilot wasn't hilarious, but episode two and three were a significant improvement. The entire series is relatable, and that's why it is so good."
Low: 60 - "In the three episodes we screened, there were certainly some high highs, but some low lows too. The Agency is finding its groove and we are excited to see how it turns out. Do not tune out after the rather meh pilot."

GRANDPARENTS
Average media score: 30/100
High: 60 - "In two episodes, there are a lot of laughs. The storylines are a bit over the top, but it works. There is a lot of awkwardness in those first two episodes, so hopefully that is ironed out quickly."
Low: 10 - "The typical multi-camera comedy - and that is not a good thing."

COPS OF MIAMI
Average media score: 20/100
High: 30 - "Your run-of-the-mill police drama. The leads are great. The storylines are bad. An episode that really doesn't make sense collapses in the second half. Eek."
Low: 0 - "A show nobody asked for, and yet here we are, folks! It's bad, really bad. The first case is boring and the cast does not gel well together. We are not against police procedurals, but we are against bad television."

MIND OF A HUNTER
Average media score: 10/100
High: 20 - "It's the typical YTN procedural. If you enjoy that kind of show, its great. If not, well, its awful."
Low: 0 - "Overly gruesome. An absolute piece of trash television."

[I]AVA AND LIAM/I]
Average media score: 5/100
High: 15 - "Its pretty bad. We like the cast, and feel bad they got stuck in a mediocre comedy."
Low: 0 - "YTN gave Ava and Liam a second season order before the first season even aired, and we have no idea why. This may be one of the worst comedies to ever grace our television screens. YTN sent out five (!) episodes, and they were all awful. Episode four and five were somehow worse than the pilot."

Huge Casting News:
-Gen-TV Development News!

Hollywood Insider is here to give you the exclusive news on several major casting scoops that were confirmed by Gen-TV Studios today... Hold onto your horses, these are major exclusives we're giving you:

1. "Having Faith": This freshmen drama that is garnering critical raves and recently earned an impressive "A+" from Entertainment Weekly and "5-Stars" from the Los Angeles Times TV reviewers has just confirmed two incredibly A-List castings. We are able to confirm exclusively that both Jada Pinkett-Smith and Vivica A. Fox have joined the cast of this drama in supporting roles. Pinkett-Smith (most recently of Fox's Gotham) will play the role of Eve, the sister to Regina Hall's Faith and her role is described as "a fireball who tends to suck the oxygen out of the room and has strong opinions about everybody and everything." "She and Faith have been estranged for years and had a falling out years ago when Faith warned her against marrying a low-life scum bucket that is now her third ex-husband and we we won't find out until much later in the season what exactly the nature of that argument was or what happened to cause the divorce; but when we do it's going to be explosive." Fox, meanwhile has been attached to play the role of Harmony, the elder sister of both Faith and Eve and the "one who least has her life together; she is a career addict who has been in and out of prison more times than she has rehab and whose latest misfortune is marrying a severely abusive man who is also her main supplier of drugs." "Faith and Harmony haven't talked in fourteen years and Faith is genuinely concerned when she realizes how badly off Harmony is." "Reconnecting with Harmony becomes a huge point of worry for Faith as she tries to figure out what responsobility she has to her elder sister."

Pinkett-Smith is signed on as a recurring character, but is being paid a reported 998,000 (or 124,750) per episode of the series; with a guarantee for "at least eight episodes this season." Vivica A. Fox has signed on as a supporting character on the series (a series regular) and will pocket a cool 1 million per episodes of the series (which equals to around 80,000 for the entire season). Regina Hall of course stars on the show as the title character and is being paid a reported 1.9 million per episode (which is around 200,000 for the whole season).

2. "Bless Your Heart": It's A "Better With You" reunion, two stars of the former Gen-TV success will appear on the new Gen-TV comedy starring Cardi B.

This sitcom which already boasts Cardi B (playing the role of Lala M) as it's lead actress (and executive producer) has added several performers to its supporting cast. Sources confirm "the entire supporting cast as fired late last month and has been recast in new roles." Josh Cooke (Grace and Frankie, Longmire, and Gen-TV's Better With You) has landed a role playing Cardi B's brother-in-law; described as "southern, conservative and a total stick in the mud fixated on restoring the reputation of his family; who views his brothers marriage to Lala M as "a huge embarrassment and an error needing correction." Gen-TV veteran Susan Sullivan (Mallory's of Jefferson County; The Malones) has landed the role of mother-in-law and Jake Lacy (Fosse/Verdon, Girls, Gen-TV's Better With You and Better Without You) has landed the role of husband to Cardi B.

3. Michael Ealy is Out and Michael B. Jordan is IN: Shortly after news broke of Ealy's casting on Gen-TV's reboot of "7th Heaven" has come word that Gen-TV has secretly recast the role due to Ealy's commitment to another series ABC's "Stumptown." Gen-TV confirms "Ealy is out and Jordan has signed on for the entire season after reading the first four episode scripts." However, "Ealy will still appear on-screen in the pilot episode before Jordan's appears in the third episode." "The different looks of the two actors will be mentioned in an episode early on and will quickly be addressed and then never mentioned again."

4. Grand Jury: This highly anticipated drama has finally booked some actors to star in it. Anika Noni Rose (Power, The Quad, The Good Wife) has joined the cast as its headlining star. She will portray Federal Prosecutor Marlena Wesley, who is described as "A star attorney when she worked for the New York District Attorney's office who then moved to the Attorney General role in District of Columbia before being appointed by the president to the federal prosecutors office and has become something of a closer, landing the biggest convictions in the last ten years." Warren Kole (Shades of Blue, The Following, The Chicago Code, Common Law) has landed the lead male role in this show playing Assistant Federal Prosecutor Grant Hathaway, a trust-fund baby who has nepotism to blame for his rocky early career. His father, a federal prosecutor himself pulled favors to get him a cushy job right out of law school and he flamed out quickly, disgracing the family and getting fired after making numerous mistakes that cost the city of new york a fortune to correct. After flaming out of the New York D.A's office (ten years after Marlena was there) he paid his dues, moving to Chicago and working in several small law firms before getting his big break on a racketeering case that gained national attention and got him hired as an Assistant District Attorney for the state of Massachusetts. He was hired as a federal prosecutor by Marlena three years ago and has been her most loyal employee since."

8- Adventure of a Lifetime - TWO HOUR THIRD SEASON PREMIERE - 5.48 million viewers and 0.9 (0.935) A18-49, down four tenths from the year-ago series premiere, and down two tenths from the spring premiere. While not a series low, it is very close (.919 on November 11, 2018).

10- Revolution - FIFTH SEASON PREMIERE - 4.27 million viewers and 0.8 (0.788) A18-49, down a whopping five tenths from its Wednesday season premiere last year, and down seven (!) tenths from the season finale in December. This is easily a new series low for the serialized apocalyptic drama (previous: 1.032 on October 3, 2018).

During premiere week, YTN's numbers will be posted night by night, before reverting to weekly numbers next week.

Up tomorrow, YTN has the season premiere of SOCCER STORIES, the series premiere of THE AGENCY, the season premiere of CIA FILES, and the series premiere of MIND OF A HUNTER.

All October long all of my networks will be having a tribute to the late great Sid Haig by airing movies he starred in hosted by Joe Bob Briggs, Rob Zombie, and our own Velvet Funbags.

8- Soccer Stories - THIRD SEASON PREMIERE - 4.99 million viewers and 0.8 (0.831) A18-49, down four tenths from last years season premiere, and down two tenths from its finale. This is a series low-tying performance in rounded numbers, but just edges out its prior low (0.828 on November 12, 2018).

830- The Agency - SERIES PREMIERE - 4.36 million viewers and 0.7 (0.743) A18-49, down three tenths from last years series premiere of In with the In-Laws. It is slightly up from the short-lived comedies seasonal average (.726), but will have to hold very well in the coming weeks to remain in contention.

9- CIA Files - FIFTH SEASON PREMIERE - 11.83 million viewers and 1.6 (1.601) A18-49, down seven tenths from last years season premiere, and down four tenths from the finale. This is a new series low for the fourth year drama (1.617 was the prior low), but still a massive hit across an ever declining television landscape.

10- Mind of a Hunter - SERIES PREMIERE - 6.71 million viewers and 1.0 (0.984) A18-49, down eight tenths from the year-ago premiere of LAPD Unit 7, and down four tenths from that shows finale. The 'meh' premiere is below any performance of LAPD Unit 7 from last season (series low: 1.139).

During premiere week, YTN's numbers will be posted night by night, before reverting to weekly numbers next week.

Up tomorrow, YTN has the season premieres of SANCHEZ IN THE SUBURBS, COLLEGE, and TAKEN

8- Sanchez's in the Suburbs - SECOND SEASON PREMIERE, ONE HOUR - 7.41 million viewers and 1.5 (1.482) A18-49, down a whole point from last years inflated debut, but up slightly from its finale (1.418) and spring average (1.366).

9- College - SEASON SEASON PREMIERE, ONE HOUR - 8.22 million viewers and 2.0 (2.014) A18-49, down a hefty amount from its revival premiere last season (3.821), but close to its season average (2.288). Like most revivals, that huge success hasn't carried over into season two. Despite the lower start, College will still rank as one of the top five scripted series in all of television on the week.

10- TAKEN - ELEVENTH SEASON PREMIERE - 11.65 million viewers and 1.5 (1.467) A18-49, down five tenths from last seasons inflated start, but right in line with the season average (1.455).

During premiere week, YTN's numbers will be posted night by night, before reverting to weekly numbers next week.

Up tomorrow, YTN has the season premieres of LOOKING FOR LOVE, LAPD UNIT 7, and TAKEN: PHOENIX
