Default Development 2017

Gen-TV Development Updates:
--Vargas plans to "gut schedule" for mid-season

In a plan that is meant to bolster Gen-TV ratings, President Eva Vargas plans to "completely gut the Gen-TV schedule in both primetime and daytime and drop what she views as dead weight." As such, she has been busy ordering numerous pilots, presentations and scripts for development, here is an update on where many of those and previous orders stand as of today:

Ordered To Series:

"D.O.A.: Dead On Arrival": Though passed over in May 2017 for the fall schedule, Vargas has since ordered a 6-episode first season to air in midseason after some retooling. This drama centers on a medical examiner, investigating cases for the NYPD whose latest case takes an odd turn when the patient, her ex-partner from the NYPD wakes up on the table during an autopsy and she realizes she can talk to the dead.

Originally conceived as a light-hearted procedural with romantic undertones "a cross between Bones and Grey's Anatomy" focused on the under 30-set, the show has been reconceived as a more traditional procedural and the two lead characters changed to be in their 30's.

"High School Chronicles: Freshman Year": Originally passed over in May, this reality series profiling high school students in their freshman year has been given a full series order for 13-episodes. The title has also been changed to "High School Diaries: Freshman Year". The intent is to follow a new crop of freshman students each year, with spin-offs planned if the series is a success. It will debut in mid-season.

"The Palm Court" : This pilot for a nighttime soap opera was passed over in May for the fall schedule but has been revived with a new title, "The Posh Life." It will focus on the residents of an upscale housing complex in Palm Springs, California. The original pilot from last year was set in Palm Beach, Florida and was less inclusive than this new pilot, which Vargas ordered two months ago. It features two gay couples; one of which is of mix-race and mixed-faith origin; and features racially diverse characters. Among the cast currently on-board for the drama are Gabrielle Union and Mekhi Phifer. Additional casting is underway.

Another change this pilot has undergone is abandoning the concept of having all the residents of the building work for the district attorney's office. The series will focus on being a soap opera and has abandoned all procedural aspects, an unusual move as serialized shows typical don't repeat well enough to get syndication deals.

"Taking Shelter": This gay-themed romantic drama is about platonic friends who become partners in the aftermath of a tragic event. It was ordered to series in May 2017 for mid-season and remains a priority for the network, and is likely to air in mid-season. Casting is nearly complete and filming scheduled for November 2017. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Andrew Rannells are attached as the two leads at this point.

"The Sum of Our Parts": This timely drama focuses on a gay teen who comes out to his conservative, mormon family and the aftermath of that. This project was ordered to series in May 2017 for a mid-season launch. In July 2017, the series was slightly retooled, changing the characters to Mormon instead of Catholic. It is still likely to air in mid-season.

Passed Over/Cancelled:

The following projects were previously ordered to series but have since been passed over or cancelled.

"Boston Homicide": Season two of this drama was cancelled mid-way through its production cycle and never aired. Two of a planned thirteen episodes were produced.

"The High Life": This high-concept drama about a family run pharmaceuticals company was ordered to series in May 2017 for a planned launch in mid-season, but has been cancelled due to difficulties casting and Eva Vargas shifting focus from avant garde fare to more mainstream programming.

"Love with Jennifer Love Hewitt": After a low-rated first season, this reality docudrama exploring love and hosted by Love Hewitt has been cancelled. It was cancelled earlier this year, but rumors recently circulated that it would return. Those rumors are untrue.

"In Limbo, Future Unclear:"

"Shocked: The History, Scandal and Spectacle of Shock Jocks": This one-off special documentary was ordered into production by Gen-TV over a year ago and has never been scheduled to air. There have been no updates on its future since December 2016.

"Food Fight: A Real Fight For Your Food Adventure": This reality project described as "A real life hunger games" started production in June 2017, but production was abruptly stopped in August 2017 and no further updates have been released. Headlines were made in September 2017 when a supposed castmember contacted the FBI and reported that she and ten others have been locked in isolation since June and are not being allowed contact with the outside world or given any information about when they'll be allowed to leave. The FBI reported they were investigating but nothing has been reported since.

"Newly American": A one-hour drama pilot about a family of Mexican immigrants trying to make it in a new country and their daily struggles. Passed over in May 2017 for Fall, said to be entering redevelopment but has never been given an update since June 2017.

Newly Developed Series:

The following projects have entered development since June 2017:

"Unemployed": This half-hour comedy focuses on four best friends in their twenties all facing various forms of unemployment or job struggles. Matt, 22 is fresh out of college and forced to live at home with his elderly parents because he's unable to find a proper job and is forced to work part-time at a fast food restaurant. Josh, 24 was recently fired from his job at a retail store and is forced to become a stay-at-home dad while his wife, Stacey, 26 works to support the family; and Naveen, 23 is having a difficult time finding work in the tech industry due to muslim-based discrimination. The series would focus on the three friends as they attempt to navigate the minefield that is finding work in your 20's and on their personal lives with each other and their respective families. Gen-TV has confirmed this series this show will be introduced during an episode of "Threesome", that will air in January 2018 and that it will be considered an official spin-off. Subsequent episodes will likely air alongside "Threesome."

"Head of Household": An attempt to expand on the networks growing and successful brand of children's programming like "Zendaya", "Magic School", "Fish out of Water" and "The Special Classroom", this sitcom aimed at children aged 8-14 focuses on seven kids in a Manhattan boarding school and the mischief they get into when they get a brand new headmaster who is cool, young and ignites in them a love of learning about the world. This is first non "Boy Meets World" project created by Michael Jacobs since "Lost At Home" in 2003.

"Grounded": This comedy pilot focuses on a 63 year old pilot who is forced to retire after having a mild heart attack, and his efforts to redefine his life. This pilot was ordered in October 2017 and is being considered for a mid-season timeslot.

"The Murder Man": This drama pilot focuses on an acclaimed murder-mystery writer who following the mysterious murder of his own wife joins the police academy with the mission of solving his wife's murder. A cast-contingency has been placed on this program, which was ordered to pilot in October 2017.

Default Mallory's End Date

Breaking News:
Mallory's of Jefferson County End Date

Gen-TV Network has announced today that veteran drama "The Mallory's of Jefferson County" will end its storied run sooner than expected. The series will air its final episode ever, in December 2017 a full five months sooner than expected. The series which will NOT return in the new year, and has not been given its "back nine" order for the full season.

This shocking news comes as the series posted its lowest-ratings ever, and received its lowest critical response ever, with a current rating of 52% on Metacritic and 57% on Rotten Tomatoes. Debuting in 2014 as a limited series, this political soap opera quickly took off and became the most popular show on TV, and has remained a staple of the network since. Now, after six seasons and 213 episodes the program will end, five months sooner than anticipated. In announcing this news Gen-TV President Eva Vargas said "Mallory's has been a tremendous success for our network since its humble debut in 2014 but the time has come to close this chapter and for all involved to move forward." "In ending, this series will leave behind a historically important legacy of forward-thinking, progressive storytelling that captured the heart of America for six seasons, earned a Peabody Award, A Humanitas Award and multiple Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards." "More to the point, this outstanding series has shined a new light on the world of political intrigue, backroom deals and personal tragedy that accompanies the political world today, all through the eyes of this one made-up family who serve to showcase lessons of the day for our American audience."

In its six seasons, "Mallory's of Jefferson County" (often abbreviated MOJC or Mallory's) became the #1 rated series on TV; set a new world-record for ratings and single-handedly financed most of Gen-TV Studios programming. It is a massive success in syndication, on streaming platforms and internationally as well.

Default Gen-TV News: Cancellations

Gen-TV Cancels ten Series
---Two Series Canned, joining previous cancellations

Gen-TV has cancelled two struggling series today which join a growing list of previously cancelled programs. Getting the axe today are struggling reality series "Celebrity Road Trip Adventures" and lowly rated spiritual drama "Your Last Wish." They are joined by previously cancelled comedies "Say Uncle", "Awakened", "Sisterly Love" and dramas "Cop City", "Boston Homicide", "Excessive Force", "Call & Response", "Shortage" and "Bedroom Stories".

In other news, Gen-TV has announced that two limited-run series, "American Citizen" and "The Plain Land Murders" will not be present on their mid-season schedule, but that they have not been cancelled. They remind us "American Citizen and The Plain Land Murders have both always been planned as short-term programming that would end before the new year; their absence from our mid-season line-up is not reflective of their renewal status." That said, the most likely scenario involves a renewal for one and not the other, as "The Plain Land Murders" was conceived as a conclusion to what is a two-part story and coupled with the less than thrilling critical notices it got, a third season seems unlikely. Especially as series star and co-creator Sandra Bullock has made it clear that her vision for the series "ends with the second season. As the story wraps to its natural conclusion." A second season of "American Citizen" seems much more likely as it both has fantastic ratings and stellar critical reviews with a 97% rating on Metacritic and 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

THE HOLLYWOOD INSIDER

YTN FILLS REMAINING SCHEDULE HOLES
Following the cancellation of four freshmen series, YTN had to quickly bring in veteran series to plug some of the holes. Beginning next week, all of the YTN schedule will be repeat-free for the first time in two weeks.

Monday nights will introduce season five of The High Times of Denver in the lead off 8 o'clock half hour. Freshmen comedy Soccer Stories will remain in its 830 timeslot. The flow between the two is a tad odd, given one is a friends marijuana workplace comedy and the other is a family comedy. The two comedies are the only single-camera comedies on the network.

On Fridays, things are going to be mixed up a bit, with Serve and Protect moving to 9 o'clock. It aired for only a month in the lead off spot, but will be back to where it aired for most of last season. The 8 o'clock hour will now kick off with docu-series Life After Prison. The GEN-TV produced series aired its first season during the summer (on Friday nights at 10) and averaged an 0.6 A18-49 demo, so expectations are likely low for its second season.

Default Vargas responds to YTN statements

VARGAS BECOMES GEN-TV PRESIDENT AS YTN GOES UP IN FLAMES
A few months after leaving YTN, Eva Vargas has officially became the new President of GEN-TV. That move comes on the heels of Ross Chin getting ax from his position, allowing Vargas to move up to president.

Meanwhile, the schedule Vargas set up at YTN for the fall has all but imploded, leaving many to wonder if she will do the same to GEN-TV. YTN is off to the worst fall start in network history, and every freshman series has fallen well-short of expectations.

Vargas was the one who assembled the new Monday night block, led off by single camera comedies, into gritty Call Girls, followed by a soapy drama. There is zero flow with the night, and all three freshmen series have failed to generate excitement. The lone critical standout, Soccer Stories, is already at a 1.2 in week two - with little room for error ahead.

Then there was the decision to cancel YTN Studios new franchise player TAKEN: Global, and replace it with an extended Looking for Love and a new comedy. Looking for Love came back with a roaring start, but fell harshly in week two, leading Marriage by Default to fall as well. The comedy is already at the levels of spring-time 'Global'.

Finally, it was Vargas who pushed for The Dark Side of Mr. Douglas and Cops of Baltimore, both of which have floundered. Mr. Douglas was trashed by critics and viewers, even though it has the networks second largest lead in with CIA Files. Cops of Baltimore seemed like a solid fit, but the network overestimated its appeal.

Two weeks into the season, nearly every veteran series is down double digits compared to last season. Television has obviously changed since Vargas' tenure at YTN began, but she didn't seem to do much to change the way YTN operates. It appears to have left YTN in a difficult position.

The lone bright light on YTN this season (at least with season to season comparisons) is Virus, which is up *again* from its previous premiere to new series highs. The move to push it to the fall was made *against the wishes* of Eva Vargas, who wanted it to remain on during only the spring.

Time shall tell how GEN-TV fares and if Paul Johnson can lift YTN's spirits again.

Eva Vargas to YTN "Kiss It"
--Vargas responds to YTN criticism

Eva Vargas, currently the president of Gen-TV Studios (Gen-TV Network parent company) finally responded to statements made about her nearly a month ago from YTN colleagues. Ms. Vargas exited her role as President at YTN and took a job at Gen-TV, quickly moving from Vice President to President when Ross Chin was axed.

Several of her former colleagues were quoted in a Hollywood Insider report saying she is responsible for their recent rating woes. The diplomat that she is Ms. Vargas waited until she had a proper response before replying. In response to claims that her scheduling was responsible for YTN Networks "worst fall ever" she says "That is hyperbole at its finest. Ratings at YTN are no worse than any other broadcaster faces right now." "Furthermore, network schedules are developed and created by a committee or people, all of whom weigh in with their opinion and who make those opinions based on months of research and development." "While, I as President of the network had a tremendous amount of sway, I did not personally make final decisions without careful consideration of the facts I was presented." "If anybody at YTN is unhappy with my decisions than they have only themselves to blame as I worked off their data. Perhaps their research skills need more work."

She goes onto to explain "In regards to every broadcast series on YTN being down double digits, I would ask YTN employees who made these statements to look at recent ratings for all broadcast series and you'll see that all broadcast series are down from what they would get 10, 8 or even 5 years ago." "To say that I am solely responsible for that is ridiculous."

Lastly she says "If anybody thinks I am problematic for Gen-TV they best have their head examined." "I am doing some very important work with the most valuable network on television today." "So to those haters, I say KISS IT." " As TLC says Haters gonna hate. As Taylor Swift says just shake it off."

Gen-TV reveals two titles:
---Knocked Down, Hot Tamales get reunion movies

Gen-TV network is announcing the titles for two of the six planned sitcom reunion movies they will air during may sweeps. The casts of both "Knocked Down" and "Hot Tamales" will be reunited for separate movies in which viewers will catch up with the characters as they are today.

"Hot Tamales" was Gen-TV Networks first sitcom, airing for five seasons between 2009-2011, and becoming a bonafide success. The series which went through several casting changes by the time it ended, usually focused on a group of women sharing a home together in Miami. cast members included Mariah Carey, Eva LaRue, Joy Behar, Brett Butler, Jenny McCarthy, Leah Remini and Sharon Lawrence. Gen-TV President Eva Vargas said when announcing the selection of this show "Hot Tamales is the sitcom that put Gen-TV on the map. It was our earliest success, gave Gen-TV its first awards show victories and has left enormous cultural impact."

"Knocked Down" was a sitcom that aired four seasons between 2010 and 2013, and was of the most popular sitcoms Gen-TV has ever aired. Initially focusing on two radically different sisters (Mandy Moore, Marla Sokoloff), the series eventually expanded to include other characters.

Default Suzanne Stefan-Clarke Dead at age 65.

Former Gen-TV President Suzanne Stefan-Clarke revealed today that she underwent treatment for two different types of cancer beginning last December. During an interview with ABC's "Good Morning, America" she revealed to JuJu Chang that last December she was diagnosed with stage IIa breast cancer, for which she underwent a round of chemotherapy and radiation. Clarke said "At 64 years old with zero family history, I found myself coming home from a routine mammogram with a diagnosis of potentially fatal breast cancer. I was in shock; no family history, consistently healthy my entire life, a new mother and now I have breast cancer." Unfortunately, Clarke's journey didn't end there, as chemo and radiation alone failed to get rid of (the) cancer and in March of 2017, she reveals "I underwent a radical bilateral (double) mastectomy, followed by the second round of chemo and radiation."

Following this step, Suzanne was given news that is almost too unbelievable to be real. Expecting a cancer-free report Suzanne was told that not only had the therapies failed to stop her breast cancer, but that she had also developed cervical cancer as well. "In addition to finding out that I'll have to continue fighting breast cancer, I found out that I also have cervical cancer." While her doctors give her a decent chance of beating the breast cancer, it seems less likely that she'll be able to be cured of her cervical cancer. " "In terms of pure statistics, the likelihood of surviving this form of cervical cancer, in this case, is not particularly good." "But you learn as you fight cancer that dealing only in numbers is not healthy. I have a fighting spirit in me that will continue to dominate and I plan on surviving long enough to see my daughter grow into an adult."

Default Gen-TV Looking for "Sisters" replacement

Gen-TV News:
Network desperate for next big soap

Gen-TV Network is desperately looking for a new primetime soap to fill the void that will be left in the fall when "Sisters" is no longer airing. Eva Vargas has set it as her top priority to develop a program that can fill this spot. She explains to Hollywood Insider "Sisters is a rarity on network TV; a show that was an out of the box hit right away and more or less has kept its audience in-tact and has been able to run for over a decade." "It is the kind of show network programmers dream about; a show you can put anywhere on the schedule and not worry about it losing audience." "It has run now for eleven and a half seasons, and is the longest-running drama in Gen-TV history." "We are looking to find a series that can take this spot, that can run for over a decade and produce the kind of fantastic record breaking ratings that Sisters has." "It is not an easy task but I'm up for the challenge."

No easy task, indeed. "Sisters" was an immediate, runaway hit that kept increasing in popularity every season from seasons one through six. Indeed, by season four it had already averaged over 200 million viewers cumulatively. Even when ratings dipped a bit in seasons five and six, they remained steadfast in demos; a number almost more important than total viewers. By season eight ratings returned to normal and have remained in the 20-30 million per episode range since. Finding a show to compete at this level may be a difficult task, but it's not an impossible one as Gen-TV routinely produces shows that generate these kind of numbers. The tricky part about replacing a show like "Sisters", is finding a show that has enough mainstream appeal to run for decades upon decades; and that has a premise which allows it to refresh every so often as "Sisters" has. As Vargas explains "Sisters because it is centered around a family allowed itself to reset every so often, because naturally as you age your relationships to family members evolve; and this has allowed the program to evolve as well." "We need to find a series that has that kind of ability built into its premise; a nighttime soap is the only genre that really has this. A crime procedural has to stick to the limits of its format; a sitcom can't get too serious and edgy prestige dramas worry about being cool all the time; whereas a nighttime soap just worries about building good characters and entertaining story arcs that build to a climax."

I Know Where You Can Stick Your Degree: a biting satire dealing with discrimination based on ones degree of education centered around two people in a mountain town one a self made successful skilled jack of all trades with only a high school diploma and trade school credentials who is the go guy for everything from plumbing to pest shooting coyotes responsible and debt free the other a college educated man with enough degrees and PhD's to wallpaper a whole house works in a consulting firm who is always in debt low on cash and a complete douche but is treated like royalty because aside from his high education he was also a big name is high school football. it is projected the this show will be a hit due to the overall theme of just because one has a piece of paper or two that says you are smarter than the average bear doesn't always mean that you are.

Gen-TV is clearly very serious about keeping hit drama "Trauma Center" constantly changing and evolving even if it means losing popular cast members. Today, the network announces perhaps the most shocking cast change yet, Kyra Sedgwick who joined the series last season will exit the program at the completion of its currently airing third season, and will not return in season four, which is likely to debut in midseason.

However, series executive producer David Aaman says "Kyra has not been fired, and we are not killing her off." Instead the plan is that due to her work load on ABC's "Ten Days In The Valley", Sedgwick will exit the series but will return for season five in the event that "Ten Days In The Valley" is canceled. Aaman says "We truly love and respect Kyra Sedgwick and all the talent and grace she brings with her to set every day." "We have too much respect for her work to kill off her character." "She will simply leave the series canvas and will return when she is available to us."

To fill the huge void left by her exit, Gen-TV has cast veteran actress Connie Britton will join the series in season four as Dr. Claudette Ambrosia, a soft-spoken but brilliant neurosurgeon who is secretly battling her own brain cancer. Aaman says "We are thrilled to have Connie Britton join our cast, even though we know her stay with us is likely only temporary." She has signed a one-season contract with the show.

Lastly, Gen-TV is also announcing that acclaimed actress Ileana Douglas has landed a recurring role on the series in season four, playing a quirky doctor who will befriend Marjorie (Mackenzie Phillips).
Trauma Center Updates:
Sedgwick NOT coming back
--Actress Won't return for season four; series renewed for season five

Despite ABC effectively cancelling her series "Ten Days In The Valley", Kyra Sedgwick will NOT be returning to Gen-TV's "Trauma Center" for the upcoming fourth season. Executive Producer Christy Leigh McPherson confirms this news on Friday when asked if the cancellation of "Ten Days" would impact production on "Trauma Center" and she said "No. We love Kyra but she will not be on season 4 of Trauma Center."

Eva Vargas, President of Gen-TV Studios confirms this news saying "We are sticking with our plan and Kyra will not return in season four." "Connie Britton is giving some brilliant performances and I can't wait for the world to see them when Trauma Center returns in January with all-new episodes." "But Kyra fans shouldn't worry too much, because she will be back in season five of Trauma Center." "I am officially announcing that Trauma Center is being renewed for a fifth season, even before season four airs."

Gen-TV is also confirming that casting is underway for several new characters to serve as series regulars. They will join previously announced cast additions Connie Britton and Illeana Douglas. The last time that "Trauma Center" underwent such extensive cast changes was prior to the launch of season two when most of the show's original cast was fired or reduced to recurring status; leaving only Johnathon Schaech and Sean Faris as series regulars. Eva Vargas confirms that for these roles "we are looking for name-actors and actresses to fill these roles, people who are known entities." She also said "Keep an eye out because we have some big surprises in store in regards to that."

Default Court Adjourned For Good

Stream-Me by Gen-TV Saves "Law & Order"
--Streaming Site to air new episodes of franchise

In a surprising reversal of fortunes similar to a decision earlier this year to move comedy "Cooking For Dummies" to Stream-Me; Gen-TV Studios has decided to move the "Law & Order" franchise to its streaming site, Stream-Me by Gen-TV (formerly known as Gen-TV Anywhere and previously known as All Access Pass before that).

Details are still a bit sketchy, but Gen-TV Studios confirms that instead of heading for the cancellation bin, "Law & Order: New York City" and "Law & Order: Hate Crimes" will move to Stream-Me with new episodes next fall. Sources tell us that each of the two series should expect to produce between 6 and 12 episodes.

Both series will finish out the current season on Gen-TV and will move to Stream-Me sometime between the late summer and early fall.

In order to accommodate airing on streaming instead of network TV producers of the show will have to make some big budget cuts; and this could potentially mean some casting changes.

Gen-TV Axes "Law & Order" franchise
--Stream-ME series will suspend production

Just a year after announcing that the once powerful "Law & Order" franchise would move from Gen-TV Network to their streaming site Stream-ME, comes word that Gen-TV has officially cancelled both "Law & Order: NYC" and "Law & Order: Hate Crimes", putting an end to a once-powerful franchise for the network. This leaves only "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" remaining in the "L&O" universe.

"Law & Order: NYC" debuted on Gen-TV Network in 2015 and was a fairly big success for its first two seasons; ratings began a downward trend shortly into the third season and the series never recovered. It was moved to Stream-Me for its fourth season, where after cost-cutting much of the cast was fired. Ratings for that season were "very low, to the point of not being profitable for us anymore" explains Eva Vargas, Gen-TV's President. The series ends after four seasons and 85 episodes.

"Law & Order: Hate Crimes"; a spin-off from "Law & Order: NYC" debuted later in 2015 and was a instant success, garnering critical acclaim and a sizeable audience. Airing back-to-back with its parent-series it formed an unstoppable ratings powerhouse for its first season. However, ratings slipped in season two and it was moved to Stream-Me for season three. It ends after three seasons and 59 episodes.

Gen-TV made the decision to end both series after discussing it with Dick Wolf and his team, and everyone agreed it was time to end both program.

The cast of these series are now free agents, available to all. They include name actors such as Rosanna Arquette, Eddie Cahill, Benjamin Bratt, Bonnie Somerville and many others. The final episodes of both will air on Stream-Me in December 2017.
