It doesn't make sense, but that is what she said. If any of you have "Straight to Video" on tape, check it out. She mentions it very briefly.

It's funny to read this so many years later. We can now easily find these episodes to watch everywhere.
It's actually titled, "Direct to Video" and you can find it on YouTube.
At 14:54, Roseanne says they don't see Crystal anymore because Dan doesn't get along with his dad.

I know this is an old thread. But yeah I just read in the past year or so about the actor who played Mark dying from a drug overdose (I didn't know about that before). I wonder if he was abusing drugs while working on Roseanne and that's why the character of Mark disappeared? They simply fired him because of his drug use, it's been known to happen. But yeah they should've given an explanation as to what happened to Mark.

Season 8 was definitely supposed to be the last season. Roseanne herself announced it in April 1995. In July 1995 she even stated she had written the finale.

John had already committed to a bunch of other things and couldn't just be expected to drop everything to tape the show. He didn't have to return as the show was only renewed on ABC until season 8 (which is why Roseanne chose to end it then)

She herself stated there wasn't enough money in the world ABC could throw at her to keep them on air. It was pretty final. Even Sara Gilbert stated at the time she was ready to move on, and it was partly why Lecy returned for Season 8.

Season 9 was decided at the last minute, when John had already signed on to a ton of other projects.

Natalie West is a mystery. She does appear in Season 6 and 8, albeit briefly, it seems to me it was more that she just didn't fit in to the show anymore. The show really began to change in Season 5, could you really see Season 6/7 Roseanne paling around with Crystal?

Ann-Marie was more a guest star, never a recurring character. So no mystery why she rarely popped up.

Bonnie Bramlett wasn't really a full time actress and was probably not interested in being in the show forever. She had a singing career and toured a lot. I do believe Bonnie Watkins (The character) might have gone out on the road with her husband. Bramlett did appear on a 2000 episode of The Roseanne Show.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Mark / Glenn Quinn actually appear in the very last episode?

Yes. Mark is in the final episode - in fact, it's revealed, I believe, that he and Becky are expecting.

Roseanne, like many long-running sitcoms with expansive universes, run into the same problem - trying to find story lines for smaller characters. Sometimes, it just doesn't work out. Nancy took much of the role Crystal played in the earlier episodes and there just wasn't enough time to explore both characters when they were pretty much working the same role (Roseanne's best, non-family friend).

It's the same with neighbors. They come and go because they've served their purpose but aren't established, or important enough, characters to bring into the show full-time, which then could take away screen time for a major character like, say, Jackie.

You can only balance so many characters in a thirty-minute show. Some are destined to vanish into TV heaven.
