Default Why is Roseanne's character so Freakin Vile in the later episodes?

I mean really, in the earlier episodes (Around the time the Cast Pic above this thread was taken - Season 2?) she was her usual smart alec self but at the same time she seemed to really give a damm about her Kids and Dan.

I'm currently watching the 1994-1995 Episodes for the first time since they were originally on (some I hadn't seen) and she is just plain awful. She treats Dan like dirt, Jackie is no longer funny just NUTS, DJ is creepy. The only likeable character is David / Kevin. The original Becky has just returned but the character seems to have undergone a complete history rewrite, not the smart headstrong Becky from Seasons 2 & 3 just an airhead type.

I couldn't stand Roseanne in the later episodes. I adored her in the early seasons.

I often think that too. It seems when she lost quite a bit of weight, her personality changed also. Seemed like a different person altogether!

I guess Roseanne had a few personal problems..which she took out in the show. The thing that I always hated was the way the men were treated..yeah the earlier seasons she or Darlene would make a classic one liner about them..and it was hilarious, but in the later episodes she just took the p*ss!. I'm a big Roseanne fan...BUT I rarely watch after season 6-7.

I never really watched Roseanne (I've maybe seen one full episode), but my guess is that the change was probably also due to the fact that Roseanne had full control of the show by that point and was firing producers and writers on a whim.

When a star has too much power, it usually hurts the show creatively.

From what I've read, no one liked the last season's storyline where the Conners got rich. It seems like Roseanne ran it's course and left a bad taste in the fans' mouth.

^ plus, that last episode with the "it was all in Roseanne's mind" twist came too little too late to help any.

This is a good topic. It did seem like Rosey had a personality change. It happened at the beginning of season six and got worse. Everything that the person who started the thread stated was true. The only one that got back to normal was Becky when Lecy G. came back to the role. She no longer was an airhead but things took a turn when she left the show again and Sarah C. came back in the role and made Becky all perky again.

I always thought Roseanne of the early seasons was different than Roseanne the person, but Roseanne in the later seasons was actually Roseanne the person just being herself. It's like she quit acting and did a Seinfeld and played herself

EXACTLY!!! We all saw this happen with MASH when Alan Alda took over, he wanted to push his beliefs and he changed his character. The only difference was that his change was a bit more gradual than Roseanne's.

When she took over most of the show, it seemed like she was pushing the idea that men suck and gays rock. Being a girl, I do believe in women's rights, but, I don't see how a woman can speak against men and then scream the second something bad is said about them. That's not quite the idea of equality there. Also, I have no problem with anyone being gay, its their life and they should do what ever makes them happy, just don't shove their point of view in my face.

Well said to the last poster. Very well put. I really like all the responses like the one about Rosey playing herself. LOL.

Being a M*A*S*H obsessive, I agree with you on Alan Alda, but like you said, his change was gradual and Hawkeye didn't become so different that he wasn't recognizable.

I think part of the problem with M*A*S*H is that it went on about two seasons more than it should have. It never became a bad show, but it was clear they were running out of steam by season ten.

I actually thought there was a creative renewal in season eight, but by year ten, it was pretty much over.

It seems to me she's lost a lot of her fan base since the series ended. Her talk show bombed. Her attempt to do a reality show was cancelled before it aired. Then there was that star spangled banner fiasco.

I don't seem to remember the star spangled banner thing. What happened there?
