Hee Haw Honey's I agree with but Gomer Pyle USMC was one of the best spinoffs ever.

I assume (and correct me if I'm wrong, Sol) that Solomon meant that these two shows are considered Continuations as opposed to being straight out spin-offs. That's why he said they don't belong on the list.

Much like The Golden Palace and Archie Bunker's Place are Continuations of The Golden Girls and All in the Family. But we've had this conversation before.

Wasn't Kathie Lee Gifford a Hee Haw Honey?

Default I've always considered "EW" a bit snotty towards certain series...

...and some of their choices in this particular list reflect their snottiness:

"PHYLLIS" wasn't a bad series. It just needed time to grow and develop- which CBS didn't have when the ratings went sour in season two. Same situation with "AfterMASH".

Just as ABC is currently considering a "CASTLE" spin-off series starring Adrian Pasdar, they wanted to extend "HAPPY DAYS" in 1982 with "JOANIE LOVES CHACHI". Some people still remember it fondly, while others groan at the mere mention of it. In the end, not enough people were watching to keep it on. Same with "THREE'S A CROWD", which is to "THREE'S COMPANY" what "ROBIN'S NEST" was in England to the original "MAN ABOUT THE HOUSE". John Ritter was good in that spin-off, and HAD the network given him more time, that would have lasted another two or three seasons. I think "EW"'s editors claim it's "terrible" simply because it wasn't "THREE's COMPANY".

And yes, Kathie Lee {Johnson** was one of the "Honey" family members, 'catlover'. As origially envisioned, "THE HEE HAW HONEYS" was supposed to be the "CHARLIE'S ANGELS" of country music- three gorgeous girls touring cross-country by bus as "The Honeys", with comedic and romantic story lines inbetween the musical numbers- but there were no takers for the show, so the producers reworked it so that it finally involved a somewhat dysfunctional family {the Honeys** running a country road house/restaurant, with comedic story lines inbetween the musical numbers. That lasted one season in syndication (1978-'79); WNBC-TV in New York used to carry it locally on Sunday mornings at 1:30am, following the "NBC LATE NIGHT MOVIE". What "HEE HAW" fan was going to stay up that late to watch it??

"THE GIRL FROM U.N.C.L.E."- now there was a good spin-off. But it was seen by less viewers than its competition- CBS' "DAKTARI". Which goes back to what I've said about most of "EW"'s writers and critics being somewhat snotty. They NEVER grew up with it {what were they doing in their cribs? Watching Joe Pyne??**.

Nodsmiley

Speaking of which, Kathie Lee originally auditioned for Charlie's Angels for the role of Tiffany Welles, but was beaten out by Shelley Hack (per The Charlie's Angels Casebook by David Hofstede and Jack Condon). I think the producers made the right choice!!

The mental picture I have of Kathie Lee chasing crooks while wearing high heels cracks me up.
