Default The Simpsons will no longer be coming to DVD

http://officialfan.proboards.com/thr...ger-coming-dvd

Quote:
The Simpsons showrunner Al Jean has revealed that seasons of the animated sitcom will no longer be released on DVD.

Responding to fan queries on Twitter, Jean explained that it was no longer viable to keep the DVDs going as the "market is dying", thanks, in part, to piracy. He did, however, explain that episode commentaries - for many, the primary reason to buy the boxsets in the first place - would still be recorded for FX.

For those who live outside the US and can't access FX or its Simpsons World app, the news is less than ideal. However, Jean has promised they will "keep pushing" to "get everything available to all".

We've reached out to Fox Home Entertainment to find out if the decision also pertains to Blu-ray (it seems likely it does).

Season 1 of The Simpsons was released on DVD back in 2001. The seventeenth season was released December of last year.

Who would have thought to see the day when home video is dying because people now prefer watching online.

Oh No

IMDb and Official Fan Proboards?

Seriously, wouldn't it be better to start your own topic with a link to a reliable source?

Seriously, do you even care that they won't be releasing anymore seasons of the Simpsons on DVD and blu-ray or do you prefer thread crapping?

Sales of recent seasons must be really bad. I remember when Season 1 of The Simpsons was one of the top selling TV DVDs at one point. I still have a few seasons left to buy and was hoping they'd at least release Seasons 18 and 19 so we could have Seasons 1-20 on dvd.

I think they're doing this to get people to frequent the new Simpsons website. It doesn't take a genius to figure this out. Sales aren't that low...if they were Shout! Factory wouldn't be pumping out tons of classic TV shows on DVD.

When this article bout the discontinuing of season DVD releases of The Simpsons was posted, I had two thoughts:

1. Al Jean is a terrible showrunner.
2. Just another reason why The Simpsons's original run needs to end.

Usually, a reason make a decision is because the sales of recent seasons of The Simpsons (probably after the 14th one) were lackluster. Or it is just the case of a show having produced way too many seasons. Another reason the DVD market is dying, or so it is claimed, is that everyone is moving to Netflix and other streaming media providers. What, you're gonna discontinue season DVD releases of other popular shows (current or former, mostly current)?

I totally agree with the Al Jean scenario...he took Matt Groening's Baby and turned it into a bastard child! Jean cares less about the Groening/Brooks/Simon Years and only cares for the Almighty Dollar!

Al Jean is the Elmo of The Simpsons!...

I didn't know they went from season 17 onto season 20, why did the DVD studio skip seasons 18 and 19?

This would stink because I collect the DVD's and I know many who do. Yes I can watch online but love to open one and watch it.

This is sad news to me. I have purchased each season as it was released, first on DVD, and then began buying the blu-rays when they began with season 13. I even bought the "no-frills" season 20 when it was released. It would be nice if someone would at least release seasons 18 and 19 to allow us to have a "first 20 years" complete set.
I wonder if the reasoning behind Fox's move is low sales, or an attempt to get folks to buy digital downloads, etc. If it is low sales, Fox is to blame. They should have fast-tracked the series and released two seasons a year when DVD sales were really hot. We could have the first 25 seasons already!
Regardless, I now regret that I stopped DVRing the series a few years back and making homemade DVDs to tide me over until the official seasons being released. Guess I will go to Fox On Demand and get the latest 4 episode and then begin recording the episodes as they air new on Fox. Not ideal, but I have no desire to watch the edited versions in syndication.
