Default What went wrong with Nickelodeon?

Nickelodeon has been lagging behind Cartoon Network and Disney Channel in terms of quality content this whole decade. CN has/had Adventure Time, Regular Show, Steven Universe, and Gumball. DC has/had Star vs, Gravity Falls, and the new Ducktales. What has Nick had to offer besides The Loud House? Fanboy and Chum Chum, Sanjay and Craig, Breadwinners, and the corpse of SpongeBob.

And the few good shows they DID have (Legend of Korra, Harvey Beaks and Welcome to the Wayne) were screwed over because they didn't do SpongeBob-level ratings.

The future doesn't look too good either. While CN and DC have upcoming shows that look promising like Mao Mao, Infinity Train, and Owl House, Nickelodeon is making SpongeBob and Loud House spin-offs.

If you were to look at Nickelodeon it seems that cartoons have turned Nickelodeon from the strongest link to the weakest link in ratings but before Spongebob Squarepants became the king of Nickelodeon's cartoons Nickelodeon had successful cartoons when they launched the Nicktoons lineup of cartoons and starting with Doug which got sold to Disney Ren And Stimpy and Rugrats Nickelodeon knew that the Nicktoons line would be a huge hit and although all three cartoons were huge starting successes it would be Ren And Stimpy that recieved the most attention at first but when Rugrats became popular ever since Nickelodeon stopped making new Rugrats episodes in 1997 due to a long hiatus Nickelodeon knew how popular Rugrats had become and seeing how popular Rugrats became Nickelodeon decided to change their production plans and created all new at the time episodes of Rugrats and even created the movies The Rugrats Movie and the sequel Rugrats In Paris Nickelodeon had no idea that Rugrats would be a popular cartoon as time went on. After the success of Rugrats it was hard to find another cartoon that could compete with Rugrats and so starting with Hey Arnold Nickelodeon knew the same magic formula that they used with Rugrats could work with Hey Arnold and as popular as Hey Arnold became Nickelodeon knew that this magic formula worked for successful cartoons. Even after the cartoons The Wild Thornberries and Rocket Power became a huge hit and with the addition of Catdog Nick was on a roll. But when The Fairly Oddparents became a hit it proved that Nickelodeon was still number one. But as soon as Spongebob Squarepants made it's debut Nickelodeon never knew how big Spongebob Squarepants would become and Nick thought it would be not as successful and get cancelled. Just like with Rugrats Spongebob Squarepants has become popular with everyone ranging from kids to teens and adults and has been seen on anything from cereal to t-shirts and almost anything else and you can bet that if and when Spongebob Squarepants does get a final season it will be known as "The Day The Cartoons Died" for Nickelodeon. But Nickelodeon needs to improve their cartoons a bit more and come up with some interesting cartoons that are worthy of watching

Nick has been on autopilot for a while now, relying mostly on Spongebob. I think the last big thing to come out of the network was Ariana Grande? In the 90's Nick was an immersive experience (Nick studios, Snick, tons of great promos and diverse programming etc), but the character and fun seems to be gone. Maybe they should try replaying their 90's shows? I doubt kids have seen them all. Cartoon Network had a lot of success back in the late 90's with Scooby Doo.

Nickelodeon hasnt carry the same magic as they were during the old days. Its the truth that Spongebob is the focus for most part of the schedule during the last 10-15 years.

Nickelodeon probably really started to decline when they started to lose the pre-teen/teen aesthetic. As time went on they lost this aesthetic as they turned to younger audiences with definitely less-than mature themes.
