TV Netflix Announces Scripted Series Based on Selena's Life

Selena Scripted Series a Go at Netflix
by Lesley Goldberg
Dec. 11, 2018

Netflix is teaming with the family of the late Selena Quintanilla to tell the life story of the Tejano music legend.

The streaming giant has handed out a straight-to-series order for "Selena: The Series", which it describes as a coming-of-age story. A premiere date and episode count have not yet been determined.

Also unclear is if episodes will be an hour or half-hour in length.

"Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory. With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives," Selena's sister Suzette Quintanilla said Tuesday in a statement.

"We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come."

Moisés Zamora (Star, American Crime) will pen the script and executive produce the series alongside Campanario Entertainment president Jaime Davila, Rico Martinez, Suzette Quintanilla, Selena's father Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Simran A. Singh.

Christian Serratos (The Walking Dead) will star as legendary Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla on "Selena: The Series" - coming to Netflix in 2020.

"Selena: The Series" is a coming of age story that follows Selena Quintanilla as her dreams come true and all the heart-wrenching and life-changing choices she and her family have to make as they navigate success, family, and music.

Selena is an inspirational figure who’s transcended generations,” said Jaime Davila, president of the production company Campanario Entertainment.

At Campanario, we’ve always known it was crucial for this series to find actors with the right mix of talent, charisma and passion to honor Selena’s legacy and the story of her family. Our casting director Carla Hool and her team have found an amazing cast to depict the Quintanilla family, and we’re sure fans everywhere will be captivated yet again by Selena’s incredible life.

Other cast members include:

Ricardo Chavira (Desperate Housewives) as Abraham Quintanilla, Selena’s father.

Seidy Lopez (Training Day) as Marcella Quintanilla, Selena’s mother.

Gabriel Chavarria (East Los High) as A.B. Quintanilla, Selena’s oldest brother.

Noemi Gonzalez (Y&R) as Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s sister.

Madison Taylor Baez as Young Selena.

Since her tragic death in 1995 the life and legacy of Selena has always been interested music fans and with the Netflix series Selena The Series it will be another entry into Selena's world. What I think will happen if Selena The Series is successful is that Netflix will make a series about Kurt Cobain and a series about Amy Winehouse and a series about Janis Joplin next. I can't figure out why people get obsessed with celebrity deaths but this series will keep Selena's spirit alive and introduce a new generation of Selena fans around the world
