Default Monika Rizzo

This case has always haunted and simultaneously frustrated me. She was the woman who went missing in San Antonio, and fragments of not only her bones, but four other people's were found scattered in her backyard. Also found was a bag of human flesh, and her neighbors purportedly saw a dog playing with a jawbone that had an overbite that appeared like Monika's. Even more horrific, in "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" style, bones were found inside the Rizzo's barbecuer. I believe that the anthropologists who gathered all of the bones had determined that the bodies had been run through a woodchipper.

Her husband, Leonard Rizzo, still has yet to be charged, which blows my mind; this was 19 years ago now. How one can have the bones of four humans, including one's own wife, as well as bags of skin buried in their backyard and not be charged with anything makes ZERO sense to me. He denied knowing how the bones got there, and, so what? He gets off scot free? I just don't get it.

I did a Google search of Monika's name, and read that her 22 year old son died of leukemia a year after she disappeared. Very tragic.

If I remember correctly, it was later corrected to be that the bones were only from one person: Monika Rizzo.

I share in your frustration as to why her husband hasn't been charged, since he's the most likely suspect. I'm willing to bet this is a case where 1) either there was a botched investigation and key evidence was lost or 2) the police are pretty sure that Leonard killed Monika but lack the missing piece to tie him to the crime. Yeah, finding the remains of her body all over his yard is bad... but where's the evidence tying Leonard to Monika's death?

I want to be clear. I totally think the husband did it. I think one of the anonymous callers was Monika's son. I didn't know he passed. Very sad, indeed.

Monika's adoptive father apparently wrote a book about her murder. Unfortunately, it looks to be out of print. I can't find a hit on it on Amazon, either. Bummer. I would have read that one.

Default HOW?!!

1.) Leonard was the last person to see Monika alive.

2.) Leonard never reported Monika missing to police.

3.) Leonard suspiciously spoke of Monika in the past tense on Unsolved Mysteries before police had determined she was dead.

4.) Monika's body was found chopped up in Leonard's back yard!!!

5.) There was suspiciously damaged drywall inside the home.

6.) Police saw evidence of bruising to Monika's face during a wellness check and Leonard was later convicted of assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping of a subsequent girlfriend.

This seems like more than enough evidence to get a conviction in Texas.

The alternative is that Monika for some unknown reason left without telling her husband — or anyone else — where she was going and just happened to be murdered. Then the murderer chopped up Monika's body, returned it to her home (somehow knowing where she lived), and buried the remains in the backyard, all while not arousing the suspicion of Leonard, who still lived there. What good fortune the person you're framing for murder doesn't even bother to report their spouse missing when they disappear!

It's a scenario so far-fetched, I can't imagine any jury saying that's not beyond a reasonable doubt. It's a travesty this case never went to trial.
