Default ABC cancels The Mayor

http://variety.com/2018/tv/news/abc-...or-1202654026/

The ratings-challenged freshman comedy was scheduled to return from its holiday break on Jan. 9. Instead, it will be replaced by Modern Family reruns.

ABC Boss Blames "The Mayor's" Likely Cancellation on "Political Fatigue"
by Michael Ausiello
January 8, 2018

ABC is blaming "The Mayor‘s" untimely death on… Donald Trump? At the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour on Monday, ABC president Channing Dungey speculated that the current political climate contributed to the comedy’s quasi-cancellation.

I feel like the show arrived on the scene at a time when people were feeling a little bit fatigued about anything that had to do with politics,” Dungey told reporters. “And I think even our title, The Mayor, maybe didn’t help us because when you watch the show it was so much about that workplace family, as well as his relationship with his mom, and [not] so much about politics.

Dungey conceded that "The Mayor’s" failure “was a little bit of a heartbreak for all of us,” adding, “We really went full-blazes with marketing. It was a top priority for us in terms of the campaign… It did not connect with the audience in the way that we were hoping that it would. I still stand by with the creative. I think we had an incredible cast.

The issue did not seem to be one of the audience not knowing that the show was there, which is sometimes the case,” she continued. “People knew — they just didn’t come. And what was more disappointing for me, personally, was the delayed viewing numbers also continued to drop. And that’s the biggest signal that, ultimately, for whatever reason, it was not a show that’s connecting.

Never saw it, but it was in the dreaded 9:30/8:30c spot that ABC struggles with.

Never saw it. Never heard of it. It happened to be on the last post list on the main board so I clicked on it. My first thought was I wish they'd cancel our mayor.

Then I looked up the show. It's about a black rapper who surprisingly gets elected mayor of some no doubt pitiful city. What an amazingly clever idea for the mainstream boob networks to come up with. What could possibly go wrong?

The Mayor's Brandon Michael Hall lands starring role on CBS pilot God Friended Me
Even though Hall’s ABC comedy hasn’t been canceled, he’s been released from his contract and allowed to join the Greg Berlanti-produced procedural drama pilot in which he plays an outspoken atheist who is “friended” by God on Facebook.

"The Mayor" Officially Canceled at ABC
by Denise Petski
May 11, 2018

ABC has officially pulled the plug on its once-promising new comedy series "The Mayor". The series was unofficially canceled early this year when it was scheduled to return from hiatus, but the network pulled the remaining four episodes, airing "Modern Family" reruns in its Tuesday 9:30 PM slot instead.

"The Mayor" was chosen as the only new ABC comedy series to launch in the fall and premiered to strong reviews, backed by a big marketing campaign and featuring a charismatic young star in Brandon Micheal Hall.

But it struggled to establish a foothold Tuesday. Its fall finale drew 2.8 million viewers and a 0.8 in adults 18-49 (Live+Same Day).
