Default Gen-TV Passes on "One Of These Days" reboot (for now)

---Gen-TV's 2020 Pilot Season

Gen-TV has been unusually quiet about their development cycle for the 2020-2021 TV season, with only a few minor pieces of information being released. Hollywood Now decided it was time to investigate and see what we could find out and boy did we ever gather information. What follows is the compilation of our findings after researching and interviewing Gen-TV development executives over the last six weeks.

"What We Already Knew":

We already knew that Gen-TV would be going into the 2020-2021 season without some very key players. Veteran comedies "Zendaya", "Unlikely Family", "Hart of Family", "Every Other Weekend" and "Making It Work" will all be absent from the schedule, as they have all completed their series runs. The first three finished production in 2019 and aired their last episodes in December of that year. The latter two completed production in the first-half of 2020 and will air their finale episodes in May 2020.

Also gone is veteran drama "American Family" which has been cancelled after three seasons, due to creative reasons. Another huge series, "Selling Out" will also be missing as that series moves to Stream-ME in May and will air a final season sometime in late 2020.

"Shift Towards Adult Comedy":

Since the launch of "Ready to Wear" in 2018, Gen-TV has slowly been shifting its comedy development away from "family sitcoms" and more towards comedies aimed at adult audiences. Particularly those that would appeal to the specific demographic of Females, Aged 21-45. "The key demographic we look for is females between 21 and 45 years of age, as they are likely to have the most disposable income to spend on products from our sponsors" explained Sherri Rhys, a top-level development executive within Gen-TV.

She explained further "Gen-TV's most successful comedies were historically comedies aimed at an upscale audience, usually viewers in their mid-20's to early 30's; often working professionals." "Series that follow that trend included Boyfriends, Doctor/Patient and of course, Making It Work." Those series and several other like it were very popular and generated a lot of revenue for Gen-TV; but as they aged and got cancelled they were often replaced with less expensive sitcoms; often aimed at a much younger audience. "Those sitcoms, which we internally called our TGIF knock-offs had very little support internally from executives but proved to be capable of sustaining us until we found something better." It was the launch of "Selling Out" that got executives thinking about making a shift, but with only that show and "Every Other Weekend" standing out from the pack it was a risky proposition "until 2018 when we launched Ready to Wear and Kate & Ali and both were instant successes." "That shifted the parameters and we knew we'd have to refocus our development on upscale adult comedy."

Further proving that instincts were correct, another 2018 debut "Cafe Oddity" debuted to similarly strong numbers as "Kate & Ali" and "Ready To Wear" and has maintained that success. Comedy development for Gen-TV is likely to focus on comedies featuring 20 or 30-something adults in the workplace or focusing on their personal lives. The outlier on the schedule is "Cafe Oddity" which struck a chord by featuring lead characters in their 50's and 60's; and featuring an entirely female cast. You'll likely see numerous Gen-TV pilots featuring demographics often underrepresented on TV.

"Reality TV":

A trend to look out for is that reality TV will be used to try and reach the previously unreachable demographic of Males aged 18 to 30, which hasn't always been easy for Gen-TV to reach. "Past attempts have failed in huge ways and we're always hesitant to try because it is a demographic that can be very fickle and hard to please."

One way the network has reached that demographic in recent years is through their profitable and popular reality TV franchise "High School Diaries" which chronicles a year in the life of high school students in various grades. The first installment in that series "High School Diaries: Freshmen Year" was a bonafide smash success when it debuted in January 2018 and a second installment called "High School Diaries: Sophomore Year" was able to match that popularity of the original. "We're looking at that franchise as a template for future programming and have several ideas that may work."

Reality programming has always been a struggle for Gen-TV, they've had some high profile successes, but just as many embarrasing failures along the way. "I think we've learned from our past misfires and won't be repeating those same mistakes again." The biggest reality flops Gen-TV has had were shows that "strayed too far from our demographic or just hit at the wrong time." One such series featuring Lady Gaga nearly bankrupted the company when "Search For The Next Great Monster" hit at a time that Lady Gaga's popularity was plummeting and reality competition series were reaching a saturation point with viewers; and "well nobody tuned in, and it was an expensive flop." Gen-TV didn't attempt reality TV again for several years after that and instead concentrated on sitcoms and crime procedurals.

In the last two years, reality has been a big hit for Gen-TV, with "Switching Places" hitting a high point. Gen-TV will likely be looking to replicate the success of that series.

"New Programming":

Among the high-profile pilots currently in contention for next season are "Biological", a family drama about a five strangers who discover they are siblings after taking an at-home DNA test. The pilot is from Amy Lippman and Christopher Keyser who co-created "Sisters", which is among Gen-TV's biggest hits ever. A sequel to "One of These Days", a classic Gen-TV drama is also in development and would potentially feature cast members from the original series.

A pilot called "Guest Quarters" that is set in a Youth Hostel is also in development and is said to feature "a horror inspired twist." "Snitcher" a drama about criminal informants is also in the works and so is a drama set in a Narcotics Unit of the LAPD. Drama pilots focused on US Marshalls, US Customers and a Swat Team are also in variou stages of development. Another pilot getting a lot of attention is a pilot about "a woman who finally cuts ties with her emotionally toxic family." Pilots set in a mental hospital and a conspiracy drama set in the airline industry are also hot commodities right now.

Gen-TV is said to be focusing extensively on drama and reality development this season with comedy being of lesser importance. "Gen-TV is very happy with the sitcoms they have right now, none of their sitcoms will be older than three seasons and all feel fresh and timely."

Source also tell us that "limited series" are a top priority right now as they had some success this season with "If Hillary Had Won" and "Maria's Quinceanera"; but ultimately their gold standard limited series remains "Love Affair" which finished its final season in 2019 and earned its highest ratings ever and swept the Best of TV Awards. "We're looking for series that feel fresh and innovative and have something important to say."
Gen-TV News:
--Last Minute Gen-TV News

As Gen-TV inches closer to revealing its 2020-2021 Fall Schedule they have released some last minute tidbits about that schedule, and which shows are unlikely to be included.

First off, the network has officially passed on "Better Days", the planned revival (spin-off) of "One Of These Days." Long in development the pilot was ultimately passed over because as Gen-TV Vice President Amy Fung-Wilson explains "It just didn't feel like the right time to air this particular pilot. It didn't feel relevant to what was happening in our world at this time." She later said "However, we will continue to keep this pilot in mind and it could come back at a more appropriate time."

They have also passed on the pilot "Guest Quarters", "US Marshals", "US Customs" and "Swat Team."

Gen-TV is also confirming that several high profile returning series will be held over until mid-season, including "Cafe Oddity" and "The Border Police." In the case of "Cafe Oddity" it is a result of Gen-TV wanting to wait until COVID-19 resolves itself and restaurants across America reopen, so the show "stays relevant and realistic and doesn't veer into fantasyland if restaurants are not open." In the case of "The Border Police" the decision to hold it over is a financial and contractual one as Gen-TV has been unable to confirm new contracts for several key players at that show as "talks about that fell into limbo during the early days of the pandemic and will only be able to resume in a few weeks from now." "So that show will be waiting until 2021."

Gen-TV
Fall 2020 Schedule
Effective: TBA Fall 2020

Gen-TV Network is proud to formally announce its Fall 2020 schedule and officially reveal its plans for the 2020-2021 TV season. Due to COVID-19 shutting down production across the industry Gen-TV’s plans for Fall are fairly risky and rely heavily on unproven, new series. The network plans to launch ten new series (six dramas; four comedies) and also benches several high profile returning series until mid-season. Gen-TV’s Vice President Amy Fung-Wilson explains “The decision to hold some of our returning programs until mid-season is a direct result of COVID-19 and to allow us to air original programming throughout the entire season.”
Among the shows being held-over until 2021 are the fifth season of returning drama “The Border Police”, the third season of comedies “Café Oddity” and “Our Pet Dragon”, the second season of “Grand Jury” and the entire “High School Diaries” franchise.
The new series include the “Going For Broke”, a spin-off of “Ready To Wear” set inside a mall attempting to survive in a post-pandemic, recession environment and the various degrees staff at the mall go to just to prevent their doors from shutting. “These Trying Times” focuses on middle class family in 2008 Illinois trying to survive after the family construction business goes out of business and they are forced to move out of their middle class suburb and into a less affluent area. Default Late Night Plans Cancelled... For Now

---Gen-TV To Join Late Night Wars

If it wasn't already a crowded field, late night is getting some new competition. Gen-TV has formally announced that starting in April they will be testing "our very first full late night schedule." Late night programming is something that Gen-TV has "toyed with in the past; trying out a show or two here and there, but not something we've ever fully committed to in the way we will be doing this year."

The network confirms that their April 2020 schedule update will include "a full line-up of late night programming, ranging anywhere between two and five hours." The exact nature of the late-night programming is still being kept under wraps until the network reveals their April 2020 schedule updates later this month. But a representative for the network says " the late night programming we have in development are from a variety of different genres and I think will be a pleasant and welcome surprise for viewers. They will offer a choice in late night that viewers haven't had before."

Official details on the late night programming will be released when the April 2020 schedule is announced later this month.

Gen-TV News:
Late Night Launch Cancelled, For Now?

With COVID-19 halting production across Hollywood, Gen-TV made some neccesary changes which included scrapping most of its April 2020 schedule plans. Among the plans that were changed was the launch of Gen-TV's first ever late-night lineup of programs.

None of the series Gen-TV planned to launch were filmed, as all of them were going to be live shows. So Gen-TV is cancelling those plans all-together, but they could be revived in the future. Gen-TV President Margo Danbury says "those plans are on-hold for now, but very well could be revived in a year or so once COVID-19 has passed."

Default Daytime Renewals & Cancellations

Gen-TV News:
-Daytime Scheduling For Fall 2020

Gen-TV is cleaning house for Fall 2020 and plans to fully update its slate of original series for daytime in the fall. The network has cancelled five series, starting with veteran reality series "Family Court", which after over 3,000 episodes over five seasons is being retired due to "financial considerations and declining viewer interest in the program." The series launched five seasons ago and was an immediate success, quickly becoming Gen-TV's signature daytime program. It started as a Gen-TV Network series only and was then expanded into first-run syndication, where for three seasons it pushed "Judge Judy" out of the #1 spot among syndicated programming.

The network has also confirmed they have cancelled "NightCap featuring Dan Harris and Elisabeth Vargas" as the once-popular news series has seen a rapid decrease in popularity since original host and creator Gio Benitez left the series to focus more on his work at ABC News. The addition of celebrity youth correspondents was no help either and continued to drive ratings down.

Gen-TV is also cancelling "The Download with Keith Olbermaan" and "Fish Out Of Water." "The Download with Keith Olbermaan" was supposed end its run in May 2020 but the Hollywood shutdown due to COVID-19 left the series unable to produce its final three months of episodes. The same applies to preschool sitcom "Fish Out Of Water" which will not return either.

Back in March before the outbreak, Gen-TV had also cancelled struggling freshmen talk show "Jenny & Sherri."

Now for the good news, Gen-TV has renewed veteran children's sitcoms "Magic School" and "Head of Household" and is bringing back preschool puppet show "The Special Classroom." They have also renewed talk shows "Mouthy Broads", "Hot Flashes" and "3Girls2Gays."

They also plan on launching five brand new series including cooking series "Morning Bites", "Quick Bites" and "The Daily Dinner" plus two brand new game shows, "Spending Spree" and "Splurge."

The full daytime schedule for Fall 2020 is below:

9am: Morning Bites (New Series)
10am: Quick Bites (New Series)
11am: Magic School (New Timeslot)
12pm: The Special Classroom (Returns to Gen-TV!)
1230: The Special Classroom (Returns to Gen-TV!)
130pm: Head of Household (New Timeslot)
2pm: Spending Spree (New Series)
3pm: Splurge (New Series)
4pm: Mouthy Broads (New Timeslot)
5pm: Hot Flashes (New Timeslot)
6pm: 3Girls2Gays
7pm: The Daily Dinner (New Series)

Several of these new series were planned to be part of a brand new late night programming block that Gen-TV was going to debut in April, but plans for that have been cancelled due to COVID-19.

Just two days after announcing the return of "Promise of Tomorrow" for Gen-TV Daytime comes word from Gen-TV's President Margo Danbury that series creator Maria Arena Bell , who also served as Executive Producer for most of the shows original run will not be returning to the series. "Maria has decided she is not interested in going back into the daily grind of running Promise of Tomorrow; and will only serve as a consultant whose brain we pick from time to time."

Instead, the day to day operations of the show is going to be handled by soap opera vetera Sally Sussman Morina whose daytime credits include "The Young & Restless", "Days of Our Lives", "Another World", "Generations" and MTV's "Spyder Games". She has also written for "Knots Landing" and the short-lived 1992 Fox soap opera "Freshmen Dorm". Her most recent credit is serving as Executive Producer and Co-Head Writer of "Y&R" from 2016-2017. She was chosen from a pool of industry heavyweights all with decades of experience, but was picked because according to Danbury "Sally brought some very clever and fresh ideas to the table, and seemed to have the best pitch for how to revive this show."

She will serve as Executive Producer on the reboot of "Promise of Tomorrow" and will also get a credit as Co-Head Writer. Joining her in the writers room will be industry veterans Michele Val Jean ("General Hospital", "The Bold & Beautiful"), Christopher Whitesell ("As The World Turns", "Days of Our Lives", "Another World", "One Life To Live", and more) and Jean Passanante ("GH", "Y&R", "OLTL", "AW", "AMC" and "ATWT").

Val Jean will serve as Co-Head Writer alongside Sally Sussman Morina, while Passante will serve as Breakdown Writer and Whitesell will serve as Associate Head Writer. Whitesell will also serve as Senior Supervising Producer.

For the directing team, Gen-TV has hired acclaimed soap directors Gary Tomlin, Larry Carpenter and Francesca James to rotate directing episodes of the show. Between them they have nearly five decades of credits under their belt spanning across nearly every soap opera in modern times.

The reboot of "Promise of Tomorrow" will debut in the fall of 2020. Since leaving the air in 2016, Gen-TV briefly aired a web version of the show that were 15-20 minute segments and featured non-linear stories unrelated to the series proper. "fans have been relentless in their passion for bringing this series back to Gen-TV." "We decided the time was right to listen."

Casting is currently underway and no information is available for that at the moment. Sources within Gen-TV however are hinting that the cast will include more than a few fan favorites as well as several new characters.
Gen-TV News:
--Promise of Tomorrow Pushed to 2021

Gen-TV is assuring fans of beloved daytime drama "Promise of Tomorrow" that the planned reboot of the series, is still in the works and will still be coming to our screens. However, it is going to be arriving a bit later than originally planned.

The initial plan was for the reboot to debut in Fall 2020, but due to the production shutdown that prematurely ended the season, Gen-TV is forced to postpone the relaunch of this franchise until 2021. Confirming the state of affairs for the show, Gen-TV's Vice President Amy Fung-Wilson said today "Promise of Tomorrow is still very much on our radar and remains in active development, but due to the current work stoppage we have been forced to postpone airing it until next year." "Promise of Tomorrow will return in 2021, and will more daring and exciting than ever before."

That said, Gen-TV is reportedly in the process of recruiting daytime heavyweights to headline the refreshed version of the show. Sources tell us the cast of the series reboot will be comprised of roughly 60% former cast members and roughly 40% new cast members. While not much is yet known about which former cast members will be present, what has been confirmed is that "Gen-TV is looking at this as a major reset for the soap opera and is planning on making some very hard trims to the cast and focusing on only a few core characters who are fundamental and vital to the show continuing." "Fans will be a bit shocked at some of the characters that will be cut and who will return."

Speculation has been running wild in soap opera groups that "Gen-TV is going to eliminate all of the older characters over the age of 40 and focus only on the younger cast members who come with less expensive salaries." One thing giving this theory some credence is a statement made by Gen-TV Executives back in 2017, a year after the show was cancelled "One of the reasons we had to cancel Promise of Tomorrow is that from a financial standpoint it just wasn't sustainable anymore in the form it was in." "The cast salaries were just getting too high and that is because it included a lot of actors who have worked in daytime for decades and command huge salaries." "With the ratings it was getting at the time the cost of those salaries just didn't measure up to make the show profitable."

One cast member who has already confirmed they will not be returning for the reboot is Vanessa Marcil, who joined the cast of the show in 2016 with a lucrative contract worth over a million dollars and played the role of presumed heroine turned quasi-villainess Nessa Gordon. The character who was supposed drive ratings up and serve as a lighting rod for the storyline ended up making little impact and was quietly dropped from the show less than three months into the contract." "Vanessa was dropped from the show and released from her contract prior to the shows cancellation later that year."

Marcil confirmed through her representatives that "Vanessa will not be part of the Promise of Tomorrow reboot because she simply has not been asked by producers to join the cast." Later clarifying "Vanessa thoroughly enjoyed her role on Promise of Tomorrow but has long since put Nessa Gordon to bed and is in a different stage of her life now and just simply would not be able to readjust to the rigors of daily soap opera production again."

Robin Strasser, who played psychopath and town pariah Lucinda Becksworth on the show has also confirmed that she "will not be apart of the reboot, simply because she enjoys her life in New York and does not want to move to Los Angeles to a long-term role." "and also, Lucinda is very much dead, not that it matters much in the soap opera world."

THE HOLLYWOOD INSIDER

YTN RENEWS MOST SERIES FOR 2020-2021 TELEVISION SEASON
YTN announced the renewal of most of its scripted and unscripted slate, leaving the fates of four series undetermined.

The shows YTN is still waiting to renew include their highest rated series, Virus, their highest rated reality series, The Neighborhood, as well as reality competition series Adventure of a Lifetime, and long-running comedy, Extended Family.

Insiders tell us YTN is wary of moving forward with another season of Virus at the moment, but definitely want to get it back on the schedule at some point. Network executives are worried about the optics of pushing a pandemic series during the current COVID-19 pandemic. A renewal is all but assured at this point, but they will wait a few more weeks before making it official.

As for their highest rated reality competition series, The Neighborhood, there are a lot of questions that remain in the air. Many of those same questions remain for Adventure of a Lifetime. The Neighborhood requires families to compete against one another, which could prove difficult when groups of people are suppose to remain separate from one another (especially since it films in different locales each season). There are talks of finding a state where restrictions are lighter, but some executives are (again) wary of the optics of such a move. Adventure of a Lifetime takes teams across the globe and forces them to compete. With much of the world on lockdown, it will be difficult to send people to various locations.

Finally, long-running comedy Extended Family was also left off the list of renewals. Many expected this upcoming season to be the shows final season, but it never completed its 16 episode order (it came close with 12 episodes). If it is indeed the final season, YTN would like to give the series a proper conclusion. There is talk of bringing the show back for a shortened 8 episode final season, with 4 of those episodes left over from its upcoming season (which was pushed off the summer schedule).

As for renewals, they include veteran comedies The Hughes Family, Blended, Life Lessons, High Times of Denver, and Soccer Stories and veteran dramas Serve and Protect, Bloodlines, Newsflash. All were expected to snag renewals, but Newsflash did come down to the wire. Insiders tell us network executives and series creators were torn between the episode count, but that will be decided at a later date (given many series episodes counts are completely up in the air at this point too). There is talk that The Hughes Family and The High Times of Denver could conclude this upcoming season. Both sides will get back to negotiations after COVID-19.

On the freshman side of things, every series that did not yet know its fate earned a renewal. That list includes dramas Cops of Miami, Asylum, Mind of a Hunter, Moments in Life, and game show Money Mountain. Freshman comedy The Agency was renewed earlier this season.

Asylum struggled in its first season, but YTN executives like the creative direction and the show has performed well on YTN Everywhere.

Renewals were a sure thing for Cops of Miami and Mind of a Hunter. The network is said to be happy with their results on Friday nights, paired with veteran Serve and Protect. There was also chatter of a possible revival of Cops of New York, which ended two years ago (and a year before Cops of Miami premiered).

There is also big applause among YTN brass for Moments in Life. The breakout family drama was halted in its tracks amid the COVID-19, ending with episode five. Only three more episodes were in the vault, so YTN wants to relaunch the show in the fall (or whenever production can begin). They are moving forward with a second season, set to consist of at least 13 episodes + 8 episodes from season one (3 in the vault + 5 more from the season episode).

YTN will make decisions on pilots later this summer.

Rumor Alert: Cafe Oddity Stars Fighting
--Whoopi Goldberg at War?

Many were surprised when hit comedy "Cafe Oddity" was left-off Gen-TV's Fall 2020 schedule and held over for mid-season. The reason given was related to COVID-19, but is that the real source of its absence from the schedule?

According to sources within Gen-TV, Hollywood Now can confirm that while that is part of the reason; the bigger issue at hand is cast in-fighting and specifically sources tell us that Whoopi Goldberg who joined the cast in season two has been "causing huge problems on-set and seems to be at war with the majority of the cast." "Whoopi came in as a recurring guest star and pretty soon basically tried to take over the show." "What went from an amicable situation quickly became a shouting match as Goldberg tried to steer more storyline towards her character and away from the principal cast members."

The only person Goldberg doesn't seem to be fighting with is Valerie (Bertinelli), who has managed to somehow stay out of the drama. Sources say the main conflict is between Goldberg, Justine Bateman, Jenna Elfman and Cybill Shepherd; who also joined the show in its second season. Producers of the show also seem to have gained Goldberg's hostility as well as she reportedly has been seen screaming at them to give her character more screen time and to cut some of the other ladies out of the show.

Sometime around January, things got so bad on-set that Justine (Bateman) was seen leaving the set in tears after being berated by Goldberg for twenty minutes over a line-reading that Goldberg didn't approve of.

Insiders tell us that producers feel stuck because they want to keep the entire cast, but Whoopi's contract doesn't have any out clauses, a decision Goldberg herself pushed for. So essentially, unless they fire Whoopi they're stuck with her. And it seems unlikely she'll be fired because her presence on the series helped drive ratings up 25% season-to-season, and her character has routinely tested highly among focus groups. "Basically she knows she's not going anywhere."

If anybody were to leave, sources inside Gen-TV say "It would likely be Justine or Jenna quitting instead of Whoopi being fired."

Default Gen-TV Shake-Up: Corporate Changes

Gen-TV News:
-COVID-19 Causes Corp. Shake-Up at Gen-TV

It looks like Gen-TV is making big changes to its corporate leadership in the wake of COVID-19 devastating Hollywood production schedules and shutting down all production for most of the year.

In response to the overwhelming burden caused by the virus, Gen-TV is shuffling its leadership to more fully work towards repairing the damage caused by the virus to Gen-TV's financial solvency. The studio has announced they are creating a COVID-19 leadership team, tasked with "repairing Gen-TV's financial state of affairs and recouping as much lost profits as possible following the completion of the pandemic." The new task force is going to be headed by Amy Fung-Wilson, currently the Vice President of Gen-TV Studios. She will exit that role to "completely devote herself to repairing Gen-TV's long-term viability." Fung-Wilson, joined Gen-TV last October when she was named Vice President and has proven herself to be a valuable and insightful presence at the company.

Replacing Fung-Wilson in the Vice President role is a top priority for Gen-TV, but they have not yet named a replacement at this time.

Gen-TV News:
--Sitcom War Escalates

That was fast. The war of words between "Cafe Oddity" co-stars just got a bit bigger. Just days after Hollywood Now published a report that said Whoopi Goldberg was fighting with most of her co-stars on "Cafe Oddity" comes word that the war of words officially got more public when Jenna Elfman tweeted a cryptic tweet that said "Beware of people who thrive on making you miserable." and then co-star Justine Bateman responded to her tweet with one of her own that said "and those same people always look for conflict, because they can't be happy on their own."

That probably wouldn't have generated much notice on its own, but things got out of hand when the supposed subject of those tweets, Goldberg herself responded to them with her own tweet that said "Respect the icons who earned their way in this business and show them the respect they deserve." Well Twitter just about exploded when that was published, it was retweeted 17,000 times in twenty minutes and as of Thursday at 9pm had been liked 1.9 million times. The responses were harsh. Nearly everybody on twitter, and believe me it is rare for anybody on twitter to agree; nearly everybody believed Goldberg was being catty and rude.

Now for the twist, Gen-TV executives who rarely (if ever) acknowledge or respond to those kind of issue publically issued their own statement that read "At Gen-TV we strive for a atmosphere of peace, tolerance and acceptance. We are very disheartened to hear of the discord between the cast members of our beloved sitcom Cafe Oddity." "Though production is currently shut-down on this and all our shows, we will be addressing these tweets and the source of conflict between the cast well before production resumes later this year."

UPDATE:

Goldberg Fired From "Cafe Oddity"
---Telma Hopkins to take over for her

Just hours after Hollywood Now published a report about a twitter feud between co-stars of "Cafe Oddity" comes official word from Gen-TV Executive Amy Fung-Wilson that "the situation at Cafe Oddity has been resolved in the only manner that was possible given the behind the scenes issues on the series." "Whoopi Goldberg has been fired from the show and will not return for the series third season in 2021."

"The tension between Goldberg and her co-stars was just too difficult a situation to manage without somebody leaving the show, and since Whoopi was the source of the majority of the tension it was only right that she exit." "We were not going to fire one of the series original cast members for anybody, even a star as famous as Whoopi."

Goldberg joined the cast in season two originally as a recurring guest star who was quietly upped to a series regular mid-way through the season. However, the increased screen time she got at the expense of other cast members began to become an issue; especially as Whoopi reportedly wanted even more and according to an internal investigation was even threatening producers that she would leave the show if some of her other cast members (Justine Bateman, Jenna Elfman) were fired so she could also get a higher salary.

Her character started off as a customer at the cafe in the series and mid-way through the season became a co-owner when she invested millions into the cafe. Sources say her character is going to be written out as having cancelled her investment in the cafe to travel around the world.

Gen-TV has already acted fast and hired veteran actress Telma Hopkins to replace Goldberg as the new co-owner.

For her part Whoopi has issued no statement regarding her exit from the show nor was it addressed on Thursdays "At Home" episode of "The View."
