Lola - the Kinks

I met her in a club down in old Soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry cola.
C-O-L-A, cola.
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance,
I asked her her name and in a backroom voice, she said, "Lola."
L-O-L-A, Lola,
La-la-la-la-Lola.

Well, I'm not the world's most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight, she nearly broke my spine,
Oh, my Lola.
La-la-la-la-Lola.
Well, I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why she walks like a woman and talks like a man,
Oh my Lola.
La-la-la-Lola,
La-la-la-Lola.

Well, we drank champagne and danced all night
Under electric candlelight.
She picked me up and sat me on her knee,
And said "Little boy, won't you come home with me?"

Well, I'm not the world's most passionate guy
But when I looked in her eyes
Well, I almost fell for Lola.
La-la-la-la-Lola,
La-la-la-la-Lola.

I pushed her away,
I walked to the door.
I fell to the floor,
I got down on my knees.
Well, I looked at her and she at me.

And that's the way that I want it to stay,
And I always want it to be the way
For my Lola,
La-la-la-la-Lola.
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls,
It's a mixed-up, muddled-up shook-up world
Except for Lola,
La-la-la-la-Lola.

Well, I'd left home just a week before,
And I'd never ever kissed a woman before.
Lola smiled and took me by the hand,
Said, "Little boy, I'm gonna make you a man."

Well, I'm not the world's most passionate man
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola.
La-la-la-la-Lola,
La-la-la-la-Lola.

Lola,
La-la-la-la-Lola,
La-la-la-la-Lola. . . .

If Richie Havens actually recorded it - I heard him perform "On The Turning Away" live when I saw him in concert in October 1998. Maybe he did record it - good luck!

Default A favorite Jimi Hendrix song

You're probably right, Steve, about Richie Havens. I checked Amazon.com and couldn't find "On the Turning Away" even on live recordings. Oh well...I can imagine it musta been fabulous!

Meanwhile...I am indulging in Jimi Hendrix lately....

The Wind Cries Mary

After all the jacks are in their boxes
And the clowns have all gone to bed
You can hear happiness staggering on down the street
Footprints dressed in red
And the wind whispers "Mary"

A broom is drearily sweeping
Up the broken peices of yesterday's life
Somewhere a queen is weeping
And somewhere a king has no wife
And the wind cries "Mary"

The traffic light said turn on blue tomorrow
And shine the emptiness down on my head
The tiny island sags downstream
Cause the life that lived is dead
And the wind screams "Mary"

Will the wind ever remember
The names it has blown in the past
With his crutch, his old age, and his wisdom
He whispers, No this will be the last
And the wind cries "Mary"

Angry 35 Years Ago Today - Kent State University, May 4, 1970. . . .

Ohio - Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young

(Young)

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

Gotta get down to it,
Soldiers are gunning us down -
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her and
Found her dead on the ground?
How can you run when you know?

Gotta get down to it,
Soldiers are gunning us down -
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her and
Found her dead on the ground?
How can you run when you know?

Tin soldiers and Nixon's coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

Four dead in Ohio,
(Four!)
Four dead in Ohio,
(How could. . . .)
Four dead in Ohio,
(How many more?!?)
Four dead in Ohio,
(WHY?)
Four dead in Ohio. . . .

Love the One You're With - Stephen Stills

(Stills)

If you're down and confused,
And you don't remember whom you're talking to,
Concentration slip away,
Because your baby is so far away,

Well, there's a rose in the fisted glove,
And the eagle flies with the dove.
And if you can't be with the one you love, honey,
Love the one your'e with.
Love the one you're with.
Love the one you're with.
Love the one you're with.

Don't be angry, don't be sad.
Don't sit cryin' over good times you've had.
There's a girl right next to you,
And she's just waiting for something to do.

And there's a rose in the fisted glove,
And the eagle flies with the dove.
And if you can't be with the one you love, honey,
Love the one you're with.
Love the one you're with.

Love the one you're with -
Do do do do do do do do,
Do do do do do do do do,
Do do do do do do do do,
Do-do-do - do-do-do!

Ah ah,
Love the one you're with.
Love the one you're with.
Love the one you're with.
Love the one you're with.

Turn your heartache right into your joy,
She's a girl and you're a boy.
Get it together, make it nice,
And you ain't gonna need any more advice.

And there's a rose in the fisted glove,
And the eagle flies with the dove.
And if you can't be with the one you love, honey,
Love the one you're with.
Love the one you're with.
Love the one you're with.
Love the one you're with.

Do do do do do do do do,
Do do do do do do do do,
Do do do do do do do do,
Do-do-do - do-do-do!

(And you know you can take this song only one way! )

Default Favorite Skynyrd song

Was I Right or Wrong?
Lynyrd Skynyrd

Like a restless leaf in the autumn breeze
Once I was a tumble weed
Like a rollin' stone
Cold and all alone
Living for the day my dream would come
Never cared for school
Or any golden rules
Papa used to always say I was a useless fool

So I left my home
To show them thay was wrong
And headed out on the road singing my song
Then one sunny day
The man, he looked my way
And everything that I dreamed of, it was real
Money, girls and cars
And big long cigars
And I caught the first plane home so papa would see

When I went home to show 'em they was wrong
All that I found was sticks and stones
Somebody tell me please was I right or wrong
Oh, such a sad song
First I got lost, then I got found
But the ones that I love are in the ground
Papa I only wish you could see me now
Take a listen papa
Whoo, I learned how to play my guitar
Gonna be a superstar

First I got lost, then I got found
The ones I love are in the ground
Won't you tell me please was I right or wrong

If there's any way
You can hear what I say
Papa, I never meant to do you wrong
All the money, girls and cars
And all the words and all the cigars
Papa, I just want you to know they couldn't take your place

When I went home to show 'em they was wrong
All that I found was sticks and stones
Somebody tell me please was I right or wrong
Oh, such a sad song
First I got lost, then I got found
But the ones that I love are in the ground
Somebody tell me please was I right or wrong

Default Another one

All I Can Do is Write About It
Lynyrd Skynyrd

Well this life that I've lead has took me everywhere
There ain't no place I ain't never gone
But its kind of like the saying that you heard so many times
Well there just ain't no plae like home
Did you ever see a she-gator protect her young
Or a fish in a river swimming free
Did you ever see the beauty of the hills of Carolina
Or the sweetness of the grass in Tennessee

And Lord I can't make any changes
All I can do is write 'em in a song
I can see the concrete slowly creepin'
Lord take me and mine before that comes

Do you like to see a mountain stream a-flowin'
Do you like to see a youngun with his dog
Did you ever stop to think about, well, the air your breathin'
Well you better listen to my song

And Lord I can't make any changes
All I can do is write 'em in a song
I can see the concrete slowly creepin'
Lord take me and mine before that comes

I'm not tryin' to put down no big cities
But the things they write about us is just a bore
Well you can take a boy out of ol' Dixieland
But you'll never take ol' Dixie from a boy

And Lord I can't make any changes
All I can do is write 'em in a song
I can see the concrete slowly creepin'
Lord take me and mine before that comes
'Cause I can see the concrete slowly creepin'
Lord take me and mine before that comes

Jesus Gave Love Away For Free - Stephen Stills and Manassas

(Stills)

If you're travelin' out west
And you see a dark-haired girl,
Tell her her love is waitin'
In the Rockies so near.
And the mountains is high
As his lovin' is strong,
It's a fine place to be
By his side, she belongs.

And they both traveled far,
And they both traveled wide.
But they traveled alone
With no one to confide. . . .
Their love can't grow stronger
Though now it is deep,
They must trust in each other
Their souls for to keep.

And we all know that people
Ain't made to live lonely,
They need to be trusted
And loved by one only,
That one special one
Who can just let it be,
And remember that Jesus gave love away for free.

Wichita Lineman - Glen Campbell

(J. Webb)

I am a lineman for the county,
And I drive the main road,
Searching in the sun for another overload.
I hear you singing in the wire,
I can hear you through the wine.
And the Wichita lineman is still on the line.

I know I need a small vacation,
But it don't look like rain.
And if it snows this stretch down south won't ever stand the strain.
And I need you more than want you,
And I want you for all time.
And the Wichita lineman is still on the line.

And I need you more than want you,
And I want you for all time.
And the Wichita lineman is still on the line.

Default Bob Marley's last song

Redemption Song
Bob Marley

Old pirates, yes they robbed I,
Sold I to the merchant ships
minutes after they took I
from the bottomless pit.
But my hand was made strong
by the hand of the almighty.
We forward in this generation triumphantly.

Won't you help to sing
these songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
none but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
while we stand aside and look? Oh!
Some say it's just a part of it:
We've got to fulfill the book.

Won't you help to sing
these songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs.

Default Another Bob Marley song I like

One Love
Bob Marley

One Love, One Heart
Let's get together and feel all right
Hear the children crying (One Love)
Hear the children crying (One Heart)
Sayin' give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel all right
Sayin' let's get together and feel all right

Let them all pass all their dirty remarks (One Love)
There is one question I'd really like to ask (One Heart)
Is there a place for the hopeless sinner
Who has hurt all mankind just to save his own?
Believe me

One Love, One Heart
Let's get together and feel all right
As it was in the beginning (One Love)
So shall it be in the end (One Heart)
Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel all right
One more thing

Let's get together to fight this Holy Armageddon (One Love)
So when the Man comes there will be no no doom (One Song)
Have pity on those whose chances grow thinner
There ain't no hiding place from the Father of Creation

Sayin' One Love, One Heart
Let's get together and feel all right
I'm pleading to mankind (One Love)
Oh Lord (One Heart)

Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel all right
Let's get together and feel all right

Both of Us (Bound To Lose) - Stephen Stills and Manassas

Why can't you hear me?
Why can't you see me?
How can you be so blind
To this feeling in my heart?

Time is a-wastin',
What have I tasted?
Do you turn a deaf ear to my call?
Both of us. . . bound to lose.

Why do we have to choose?
Both of us. . . bound to lose.

Now can you hear me?
Now can you see me?
How do you like a fool when he's down?
Is that really how you see me -
Just a statue making sounds?

(LATIN SHUFFLE)

Rod - Hey Jack, what's happenin'?
Joe - Oh, I don't know.
Rod - Well, rumor around town says you think you might be heading down to the shore.
Joe - Uh, yeah, I think I'm goin' down to the shore.
Rod - Whatcha gonna do down there?
Joe - Uh, I don't know, play some video games, buy some Def Leppard t-shirts.
Rod - Hey, don't forget to get your Motley Crue t-shirt, y'know, all proceeds go to get their lead singer out of jail.
Joe - Uh huh.
Rod - Hey, you gonna check out the Sandbar while you're there?
Joe - Uh, what's the Sandbar?
Rod - Oh, it's this place that lets sixteen year-old kids drink.
Joe - Oh, cool.
Rod - Y'know who's gonna be there?
Joe - Uh, who?
Rod - My favorite cover band, Crystal ****.
Joe - Oh.
Rod - Yeah, they do a Doors show, you'd be really impressed, in fact, it goes a little like this:

Love me two times baby
Love me twice today
Love me two times girl
Cause I got AIDS
Love me two times baby, once for tomorrow, once cause I got AIDS

Joe - Wow, Pretty good Jim Morrison impersonation there.
Rod - Yeah, I hope those guys have a good sense of humor and don't take us to court.
Joe - Uh, what's the court?
Rod - Never mind that,
Joe - Oh, you mean like the People's Court?
Rod - Well, that's another story; the important thing here is you gotta ask me how I'm gonna get down to the shore.
Joe - Uh, how you gonna get down to the shore?
Rod - Funny you should ask, I've got a car now.
Joe - Oh wow, how'd you get a car?
Rod - Oh my parents drove it up here from the Bahamas.
Joe - You're kidding!
Rod - I must be, the Bahamas are islands, okay, the important thing now, is that you ask me what kind of car I have.
Joe - Uh, what kinda car do ya' got?
Rod - I've got a BITCHIN CAMARO!

BITCHIN CAMARO, BITCHIN CAMARO
I ran over my neighbors
BITCHIN CAMARAO, BITCHIN CAMARO
Now it's in all the papers.
My folks bought me a BITCHIN CAMARO with no insurance to match;
So if you happen to run me down, please don't leave a scratch.
I ran over some old lady one night at the county fair;
And I didn't get arrested, because my dad's the mayor.
BITCHIN CAMARO, BITCHIN CAMARO
Doughnuts on your lawn
BITCHIN CAMARO, BITCHIN CAMARO
Tony Orlando and Dawn
When I drive past the kids, they all spit and cuss,
Because I've got a BITCHIN CAMARO and they have to ride the bus.
So you'd better get out of my way, when I run through your yard;
Because I've got a BITCHIN CAMARO;
And an Exxon credit card.
BITCHIN CAMARO, BITCHIN CAMARO
Hey, man where ya headed?
BITCHIN CAMARO, BITCHIN CAMARO
I drive on unleaded.
