Default Eva Vargas Being Released?

Former Gen-TV President Eva Vargas surrendered herself to police custody on Tuesday morning in Los Angeles to being her three-year sentence for various white collar crimes. As part of a plea deal in a nationwide college bribery scandal, Vargas turned states evidence against several others involved in the scandal, including former Gen-TV executives Leah Marshall and David Nevins, who were both charged with bribery, theft of honest services, mail fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, conspiracy to commit perjury and evidence tampering. Those last two charges were added last week after new evidence was found, thanks in part to Eva's testimony.

Marshall and Nevins were sentenced last week to ten years in prison each after pleading guilty to all charges.

Hollywood Insider can confirm that Eva Vargas has been sentenced to spend the next three years in federal prison in Stanford, Connecticut while Nevins and Marshall have been sentenced to ten years each in federal prison in Richmond, Virginia.

Explosive new allegations against Marshall and Nevins came from Eva Vargas's testimony to federal prosecutors early last week when she handed over evidence linking Marshall and Nevins to a large-scale money laundering scheme in which they attempted to set up a fake charity to launder money for bribes and pay-outs to people connected with the scandal. Vargas produced two key pieces of evidence that sent them away for ten years; a video recording of Marshall and Nevin discussing the scheme with William Singer, the man at the center of this scandal. She also had numerous email conversations where Nevins and especially Leah Marshall, discussed with her details of this scheme in an attempt to get Vargas to join the two in the fraud.

And lastly, we can confirm that Eva Vargas was in fact the person who turned Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin into the federal prosecutors in the first place. Following a disagreement between the two at a party in Loughlin's home in October 2018, Vargas called the FBI and reported Loughlin, Huffman and Singer, which prompted the feds to look harder into the case they were already investigating.

Sources say that for her cooperation a three-year sentence was more than fair as she was initially looking at over ten years in prison. Vargas will be transported to CT tonight and will be in lock-up by midnight.

Nevins and Marshall will be transported to NY by weeks end and will not see the light of day for nearly a decade.

Sources say that learning that Vargas turned them in has sent Felicity Huffman into a rage and that Lori Loughlin is "despondent over being betrayed by her friend."

LEGAL NOTICE:

The preceding was completely fictional and has no basis in the real world. Eva Vargas is not a real person and is a fictional character. David Nevins and Leah Marshall are fictional characters and are not real.

This is for entertainment purposes only and is not real. Gen-TV is not a real television network.

Lori Loughlin, Felicity Huffman and William Singer have no real life connection to an Eva Vargas or a Gen-TV Network. This is a fictional story for entertainment purposes only. It is not real.

Breaking News:
---Eva Vargas Being Freed?

Turns out good behavior behind bars has significance, because sources tell Hollywood Now that Eva Vargas, the disgraced former President of Gen-TV is being released from prison on good behavior. Multiple sources have confirmed that the US Department of Justice has granted Eva Vargas an early release from federal custody due to "exemplary behavior and cooperation behind bars." and that "she could be released as soon as next week." Should this occur Vargas would be placed on probation for the remainder of her sentence which is about another two and a half years.

Even more shocking is the news that she just may find herself employed at Gen-TV again. Sources close to the studio inform us that Vargas is being approached for a high level job at the network and that "while it won't be anything as high-profile as President or Vice President it would be a very important role." One such possibility is that Eva Vargas may take over the vacant role of Executive Assistant-Vice Chairperson, Board of Directors that Leah Marshall was fired from when Vargas turned state's evidence against her. That role is of the Executive Assistant to the Vice Chairperson of Gen-TV's powerful board of directors. It is an elected position, but in some circumstances can be appointed.

Confirmation of her release is still pending, and sources tell us it should be within the week.

A Hollywood Now Exclusive:
--Dept. of Justice Speaks Out

A representative for the Department of Justice has spoken out in response to an earlier article about Eva Vargas potentially being released from prison, and they didn't mince words. "Eva Vargas is a convicted criminal and has been sentenced to a multiple year prison sentence. Good Behavior inside prison doesn't make up for that fact. Under no circumstances is Eva Vargas being released from prison. This is a complete fabrication and misstatement of truth. Eva Vargas will serve out the remainder of her sentence as required by the court." "Any suggestion otherwise is a bold faced lie."

So there you have it, Eva Vargas will remain in prison for the foreseeable future. However, a small shred of hope remains as Vargas attempts to file an appeal of her verdict with her lawyers citing "coercion and improper legal filings" on the part of the prosecution in this case. It's a long-shot at best, but seems to be her best hope at this point.

Hollywood Now spoke with the lawyers for Ms. Vargas and got their side of the story "It is true that Eva was in discussions with the DOJ about a potential release from prison; a matter that for the record the department of federal corrections was in full support of and in fact it was the department of federal corrections that recommended Eva for release." "She got a glowing report from the corrections department fully petitioning for her release; however it seems political issues have stalled this release as the President does not support her release, and I think we all know why." "If her name was Eva Smith instead of Eva Vargas I think she would already be released" said Delta Holden; the attorney of record for Eva Vargas.

Default Gen-TV to Retire Two Comedies

----More Sitcoms Likely To End

Although widely speculated, Gen-TV is now officially confirming that "Zendaya" will end it's run on the network next year after completing it's fourth season. The family sitcom has been on the chopping block nearly every season since ratings took a tumble in it's second season.

In fact, this month it's renewal came down to the wire and sources say that a syndication deal was the deciding factor. "Zendaya was all set to be cancelled but at the last minute Freeform stepped up and made a deal to syndicate all past episodes of the show, dependent on a fourth season to add more episodes to the package."

The series has had a strange run on Gen-TV; debuting in the 2016-2017 season alongside "Hart of Family", "Unlikely Family", "Magic School" and "Selling Out." It generated a lot of publicity quickly for the network and was an immediate success with younger viewers, particularly female viewers who had grown up with "Zendaya" on the Disney channel. However back-stage controversy nearly ended the series run before it began; as series star Zendaya Coleman walked off set and went on strike, delaying production and causing tension on-set. Reports at the time were that Coleman was acting like a spoiled brat and being unprofessional; rumors that Coleman herself called "unfounded lies." Later in the summer of 2016, reports surfaced that Coleman was being bullied by a producer of the show, a white man named David Rance. Though executives called those reports "absolutely unfounded and without merit" Rance was removed from the series and moved over to "Unlikely Family" and replaced with Michelle Larkin, a bi-racial producer who has remained at the series ever since.

Ratings took a tumble in season two and though the show is usually steady, it has never become a breakout success for the network. The series fortunes dimmed considerably among network brass as their wants and needs changed, especially in the last year the network has veered away from family comedy and into more adult-oriented comedies geared for 20 and 30 somethings instead of teenagers.

It is that very change which may spell doom for some other veteran Gen-TV comedies; "Hart of Family" and "Unlikely Family" could very well see their runs cut short as Gen-TV begins to develop other comedies. Both shows has been steady performers for the network but have never become the breakout successes that "Selling Out" or "Ready To Wear" have become. Sources tell us that if not next season, then shortly thereafter they could both be cancelled.

"Unlikely Family" and "Hart of Family" to end
---Gen-TV Cancels Two Sitcoms

After much speculation, Gen-TV can finally confirm that they have decided to end the runs of two sitcoms; "Hart of Family" and "Unlikely Family" after they complete their fourth seasons in May 2020. Though both are steady performers, neither has ever become a breakout success or awards-grabber like fellow comedies "Selling Out" and "Ready To Wear."

Another strike against them is that Gen-TV's comedy development has moved into another direction with Gen-TV's President Garrett Jones explaining "We've been inspired by the success of Ready To Wear and Kate & Ali to develop more adult comedies and move slightly away from the kid-friendly comedies of the past, that Hart of Family and Unlikely Family represent." And it's true, looking at their recent schedules comedies aimed at adult-audiences greatly outnumber those of the family-skewing series. Aside from Selling Out and Ready to Wear; the network also has Kate & Ali, Cafe Oddity, Making It Work, Unemployed, Our Pet Dragon, Every Other Weekend and Bless This Heart. The only remaining family comedies are Zendaya, Unlikely Family, Hart of Family and Baker's Dozen. The first three are ending this upcoming season and the latter is being massively retooled to be more focused towards an adult audience.

Default Most Profitable

----What Show Tops List

What is the most profitable show in Gen-TV History? Answering that question is the goal of this Hollywood Now list. Over the last 10 seasons (It'll be 11 in September) Gen-TV has made billions of dollars and produced some memorable and popular series; such as "Mallory's of Jefferson County" and "Over My Head". But which series reigns supreme? We'll answer that question as we countdown the 25 most profitable series in Gen-TV History; looking at a variety of factors including Domestic Revenue, International Revenue, Syndication and Streaming Profitability, DVD/Home Video Sales/Merchandising Sales, Emmy and Golden Globe Nominations/Wins and Overall Popularity.

Over the next several weeks we'll attempt to answer that question, in small groups until we reach #1. Here is the next batch:

19. TIE: Two series tie for nineteenth place among the most profitable shows in Gen-TV history; both earning approximately the same amount of money.

First up, the older of the two series:

"Hot Tamales": Although it's easy to forget, this series which aired for five seasons between 2009 and 2011 was once insanely popular. So popular in fact that it is often considered to be Gen-TV's first break-out comedy series. Though ratings (and certainly critical support) died down in later seasons as frequent cast changed affected the quality of the series.

It's also easy to forget that this series once averaged over 18 million viewers per episode; and at the height of it's popularity earned its stars a salary of over a million dollars per episode. The show was a popular spot for A-List guest stars as well and perhaps the most impressive was a two-episode arch featuring Whitney Houston which aired as the season finale for the series inaugural season.

The series did very well in syndication; and for a time in 2014 was the #1 rated comedy in second-run. It aired on multiple networks from 2014-2016 and was then pulled from syndication and has aired exclusively on Stream-ME since 2017. It has sold well on DVD; with all seasons available and having been released between 2013 and 2016.

The show has huge international appeal and airs in over 60 countries where it remains a big hit.

Overall Profits: 155.96 million

Tied with "Hot Tamales" is another iconic Gen-TV series; "The Huntress".

"The Huntress": Like "Hot Tamales" this show aired for five seasons on Gen-TV ending it's run in 2013. It was a action-drama about a tough as nails bounty hunter that starred Shannen Doherty in the title role. It was a massive success, and for a time was the networks most popular drama series. It had a lot of fans and was even picked for a critics choice award during its first season as "Outstanding Drama."

The series eventually ended when ratings began to slip and the network lost faith in the ability of its producers to craft storylines that were fresh and new.

In syndication the series was and remains a solid and true hit. It landed a huge syndication deal with A&E TV that earned the network nearly four million dollar in it's first two-years alone. After the contract for that deal expired in 2016, the series has aired on GetTV, SyFy and USA. It also streams on Amazon Prime and Sony Crackle. It is the #1 most popular drama on Sony Crackle and in the top 50 on Amazon Prime.

It sells well internationally and is among the top 10 American television series in Europe and in Japan it is among the most popular television series ever; with a devoted fan following and a yearly Comic-Con like festival held every October.

Overall Profits: 155.96 million

18. Doctor/Patient: Airing for four seasons (2009-2012) this comedy series went out on top with it's final season averaging 23.3 million viewers and was Gen-TV's second most-watched sitcom of the season (after "Over My Head" which averaged 36.5 million for its third season). It may seem like a lifetime ago, but this series was once considered a landmark comedy and became something of a signature series for Gen-TV, who made many programming decisions trying to emulate the success of this show.

It ended its run in 2012 after four seasons due to a combination of financial reasons (production costs rising, showing no signs of decreasing) and creative struggles (writers felt they had no ideas left and the story had come to a conclusion.) It entered syndication in 2014 and was an instant success; airing on Lifetime, Oxygen, WE, E, TVLand, Nick@Nite, TBS, USA and Bravo over various time periods. It was always a success in second-run, and remained available until 2016 when Gen-TV moved it exclusively to Stream-Me.

It has sold well on DVD and streamed on Netflix and Hulu until 2016. Internationally it has been a solid performer, with runs overseas in various countries starting in 2015. It currently airs in over 68 countries.

Overall Profits: 165.83 million

17: Clue: Launched in 2009 and running until 2015, this game show was an early success for Gen-TV Studios syndication arm. It brought a lot of publicity and massive ratings for what was at the time, a relatively new studio. Coupled with celebrity participants playing the characters of the classic board game, this fun and lively series was an immediate hit. So successful in fact that it eventually launched a spin-off series "Super Clue" that ran briefly on Gen-TV Networks primetime schedule.

Around the world "Clue" was a big success, airing at its peak in more than 50 countries and being the #1 American game show in the UK for four seasons straight. Game shows obviously have limited appeal on DVD, so it hasn't generated much profits from that except a few "Best of Clue" sets released in 2012 that generated a decent profit. On Streaming, classic episodes of the series have aired on Stream-ME since 2018 and select episodes have been available on Amazon Prime since 2016.

Overall, Clue has been a very successful series for Gen-TV Studios, generating a massive profit.

Overall Profit: 165.87 million dollars

16. Deidre Hall: Launching in 2009 and ending in 2013, this daytime talk show was an immediate triumph for Gen-TV. Starring the popular star of soap opera "Days of Our Lives" while she was on a hiatus from the series, this topical series mixed social issues with light general interest in a format that grabbed viewers in droves. It's 2009 debut episode drew over six million viewers and set a record at the time for the highest debut of a talk show, topping the record set in 1996 by "The Rosie O'Donnell Show". Later in 2009, the series achieved another milestone when it became the first talk show in history to dethrone "The Oprah Winfrey Show" as the #1 rated talker in the country when it reached 40.0 million viewers.

The success of this talk show helped launch Gen-TV's daytime schedule which was struggling at that point and relied heavily on reruns of sitcoms and old soap operas. By 2012 however, Hall grew tired of the format, viewers began to drift away and Gen-TV management experienced sudden turn-over and support for the show began to wain away as they attempted (and often failed) to launch similar talk shows. Speaking on the series rocky final few seasons, Hall reflected in a 2014 article for the Hollywood Now saying "After we topped Oprah it seemed that our support within Gen-TV diminished. We had reached the top and had nowhere left to go. Suddenly, development for Gen-TV was based on finding talk shows that would replicate our format and often failed to do so with any sort of artistry." Touche, in the years following her, Gen-TV launched several talk shows featuring daytime soap stars including Susan Lucci, Lisa Rinna and Jackie Zeman; but not had the long-lasting success of "Deidre Hall".

Internationally, this show was one of the few (alongside Oprah, Jerry Springer, Maury Povich and Rosie O'Donnell) to find lasting success. In Germany it remains the most-watched American program ever, after "Baywatch" and "Melrose Place." In France, it aired to such acclaim that in November 2016, they declared every March 2nd as "Deidre Hall Day" a national holiday in which French people (mostly men for some reason) call out of work and watch reruns of the show.

It has had a fantastic shelf life after it's run with reruns airing on Lifetime from 2010 until 2015 and on Oxygen from 2015 until 2016. In 2016, it reruns moved exclusively to Stream-ME and aired until 2018. It was the #10th rated series on Stream-ME for the entirety of it's run there. in 2011 Gen-TV Studios released four "Best Of" boxed sets featuring over 70 episodes of the show and all of them remained best-sellers throughout 2012 and 2013.

Overall Profits: 179.55 million dollars

THE HOLLYWOOD INSIDER

YTN ANNOUNCES FALL PREMIERE DATES
YTN announced its fall premiere dates today, pushing its premiere week to September 29th - the latest start in network history. The network also swapped timeslots of two veterans, but more on that below...

The fall season kicks off Sunday, September 29th with a two hour premiere of Adventure of a Lifetime. The network announced a new host will also debut during the season premiere. New gameshow Money Mountain will debut the following week, October 6th, at 9/8c.

YTN will also air a two hour premiere for Virus, its first two hour episode in series history. The two hour episode begins at 9/8c, following the series premiere of new comedy Grandparents. The other major news on Thursday night is the swap of The Hughes Family and Full Time Mom from their initial timeslots. YTN will now air Full Time Mom at 9/8c, bumping The Hughes Family to 930. Both comedies return for their seventh season on Thursday, October 10th - the last two series to mark their fall premieres on YTN.

On Tuesday night, YTN's highest rated comedies will each premiere with a one hour episode. Freshman breakout Sanchez's in the Suburbs returns for its second season on Tuesday, October 1st at 8/7c, leading into a one hour premiere for the second season of revival College (also in the 9 o'clock timeslot for the first time since season one). The night will likely be one of YTN's highest rated of the season, with veteran stalwart TAKEN rounding out the night. The following week, October 8th, the second season of Parkway Motel (830), and the series premiere of Ava and Liam (930) join the schedule.

All other shows not mentioned above have a regular :30 or :60 premiere during premiere week.

Gen-TV Cancels 1, Renews Another:
---Say goodbye to Summer Share

Gen-TV has canceled freshmen summer dramedy "Summer Share" after one season. The dramedy starring Tamera Mowry-Housley, Matthew Lawrence, Hillary Duff and Drake Bell will not return for a second season after suffering ratings losses nearly every week since it's debut.

The series debuted in June to 12.3 million viewers and a 4.4 in demos and has since seen numbers drop 6.8 million and a 2.1 in demos. Additionally, the series suffered from the worst critical reviews Gen-TV has seen in years with a score of 80% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 10% on Metacritic.

In happier news, Gen-TV is pleased to confirm they have renewed veteran anthology drama "The Hardest Goodbye" for a sixth and seventh season. Currently in its fifth season, it has averaged a strong 20 million viewers and a 5.8 in demos. It will likely return next summer for it's sixth season and the seventh likely to air in summer 2021.

Gen-TV Renewal News:
--Two Summer Series Renewed

Gen-TV is rewarding a high performing summer series, "Climb The Pyramid" with a renewal for next season. Averaging 24 million viewers and a 4.5 in demos this summer, the game show will return for a fourth season in summer 2020. Gen-TV saved the series in 2017 after it was cancelled by YTN and after some tweaks in game play, rules and the addition of new hosts it became a bonafide success story for the network.

Gen-TV is also given a rather unexpected renewal for "Soapless: Life After Daytime" which had a rocky season this summer in which ratings seriously ebbed and flowed. It will return for it's fourth season next summer as well. The reality docudrama follows the lives and careers of soap opera actors after they leave daytime or when their soap opera is cancelled. This season profiled well known soap opera actors Bree Williamson, Peter Reckell, Michael Dietz, Melissa Archer, Beth Ehlers and Alicia Minshew.

No decision has been made on the rest of Gen-TV summer programs, "Without Borders", "Summer Heat: The Resort" or "Breaking Blue" though all three are expected to be renewed a formal decision has not yet been announced.

This weeks movie of the week on RMTV is called Bloody Congo set in the 1960's during the Congo crisis actually this part of a three week event the first two movies will focus on a group of mercenaries who have joined the fight to keep Katanga ( later turned into Zaire) independent from from both the Congolese government and the United Nations the second two will center around the same group as they return to fight the savagery of the Simbas warning this won't be for the squeamish.

Three brand new front-runners have emerged as leading contenders to join Rider Strong as the female lead on "Baker's Dozen." Singer/Actress Ashlee Simpson, Dancer/Singer/Actress Julianne Hough and Actress/Singer Vanessa Hudgens have quickly become leading candidates for the role.

Gen-TV's Vice President Cynthia Simmons said "All three bring something unique with them when they are on-screen and would be an ideal choice for the female lead on Baker's Dozen."

Simpson has a long history with Gen-TV and previously appeared on the Gen-TV sitcom "Teacher's Pet" which was one of the networks earliest comedies.
Baker's Dozen Reboot News:
---Gen-TV Sitcom News

Gen-TV has been in a heated and exhaustive search all summer to find a replacement to departing "Baker's Dozen" cast members Alyson Hannigan and Maria Canals-Barrera whl leave the show as it is redeveloped into a "more stylish comedy aimed at an older audience."

The network has auditioned and made offers to multiple A-List performers but so far no deals have closed; until now.

Hollywood Insider is able to confirm the very unexpected casting of Chris Colfer (Glee) in the leading role. Yes, Chris Colfer, a male has been cast as the new romantic lead on "Baker's Dozen" and will be paired with Rider Strong in a new LGBTQ storyline. Hollywood Insider has confirmed this with Gen-TV Executives who said "After searching all summer for a qualified leading actress to take on this new role and having no success, we started an internal conversation about what kind of representation is missing on our network and came to the conclusion that the answer to our casting issue on Baker's Dozen was a gay romance." "Once we decided to go in that route we had a very shortlist of actors we wanted to approach for this role, and at the very top was Chris Colfer."

Colfer will join the series when it debuts next month.

He will be playing the role of Ian Westfield; a 32 year old studio musician and theater actor who initially moves in as a renter to fill a vacant room and soon finds himself involved in an unexpected romance with Oliver (Strong).

Oliver played by Strong was previously portrayed as a straight widower dealing with how to support his five children. This fact won't be ignored and in fact will be a pivotal plotline this season as Oliver "attempts to understand and make it through these very unexpected, seemingly out of the blue romantic feelings he's never felt before and what that means." Hollywood Insider spoke to Strong and he had this to say "We will see Oliver go through a complete journey this season; he will be given a full range of emotions to deal with and come through on the other side." "The new scripts are tremendous and I'm certain everybody is going to very much enjoy this new version of Baker's Dozen." "Chris Colfer is fantastic in this new role and I suspect people will be very surprised at the level of untapped talent he had that he never got to showcase before; Ian Westfield is not Kurt Hummel from Glee and is a totally confidant, mature grown adult."

Rider Strong previously played a gay character on Gen-TV's "Revolving Door" which ran for five seasons from 2012 through 2015. Strong says he experienced "zero hesitancy or reluctance when it came to playing a gay character again." saying "I wouldn't ever be like I've already played a straight character so I won't do that again." "So it's no different with a gay character. A great character is a great character and I am not worried about being typecast, because we've moved beyond that."

As for why they weren't able to find a female lead this summer, Gen-TV executives simply said "It just didn't work out in terms of closing a deal for the appropriate compensation." And they also confirmed that "yes, the issue of the second roommate will be addressed quickly into the new season."
