Paper Lace did the original, both versions were released in 1974. Paper Lace in January & and Bo Donaldson's in April.

OMG!!! I loved Billy don't be a hero!!! I had the 45 by Paper Lace!! I TOTALLY was unaware that Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods also sang it! I wonder why two different groups covered the same song in such a short time frame???

Unless you're British, that's surprising since it was Bo Donaldson's version that was played to death on the radio and reached #1 on the U.S. singles chart. The version by Paper Lace hit #1 in the U.K. but only reached #96 in the U.S.

You know, Maybe I could be wrong! I had the 45 of the most popular version I guess. I'm thinking the 45's that were in stores would be the one played on the radio a lot! The reason Paper lace sticks in my mind is I heard "Billy don't be a hero" on cable TV music of the 70's not that long ago and it was the version by Paper Lace. So that could be why I'm thinking that was the more popular version. I guess the 45 I had was Bo Donaldson's version !

Still I wonder why two different artists did the same song so close together????
