On this day in 1973, September 20, Jim Croce died in a plane that crashed after taking off from the airport at Natchitoches, Louisiana. He had just given a concert at Northwestern State University and was en route to what would have been the last stop on what he decided would be his last tour - Sherman, Texas. Also killed in that plane crash was Maury Muehleisen, Croce's lead guitarist.

1980, During a North American tour, Bob Marley collapsed while jogging in New York's Central Park. After hospital tests he was diagnosed as having cancer. Marley played his last ever concert two nights later at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Interesting. I was young when he died. Certain songs of his had a lot of air-play on the radio. Those are strictly the songs of his I am familiar with, Bad Bad Leroy Brown, Big Bad Jim, Time in a Bottle, (I Got A Name, my very favorite song of his). Anyone know why he was calling this his last tour?
It seemed to me at that time that he was essentially a new upcoming singer-songwriter.

1987, American jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius died from injuries sustained in a fight. Pastorius was trying to enter the Midnight Bottle Club in Wilton Manors, Florida, (where he'd been banned), and became involved in a fight with a bouncer, Pastorius fell into a coma and was put on life support. In 2006, Pastorius was voted "The Greatest Bass Player Who Has Ever Lived" by readers in Bass Guitar magazine. Was a member of Weather Report and worked with various acts including Joni Mitchell and Herbie Hancock.

1995, Mariah Carey made chart history when she started an eight week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Fantasy', making her the first female act to enter the chart in pole position.

On this day in 1962, October 5, the Beatles released "Love Me Do" in Britain - their first EMI single. it got up to number seventeen in the U.K., and when Tollie Records released it in the U.S. in 1964, it went to number one there.

He wanted to spend more time with his wife and son, and he also anted to write novels and screenplays. He was actually considering abandoning music completely after having struggled for a decade before he made it. (He was 29 when he had his first big hit single.) In September 1973, Croce was 30 years old; he figured he only had 30 years left before his creative talents would wane, and he wanted to do something else.

On this day in 1969, October 6, the Beatles' "Something" was released as a single in the U.S., backed by "Come Together." It was released in the U.K. at the end of the month. It was George Harrison's only Beatles A-side and only the second Beatles single since Brian Epstein's death that did not feature a Paul McCartney song on either side. Frank Sinatra, famously, thought "Something" - which he called "the greatest love song in fifty years" - was a Lennon-McCartney song, which pretty much summed George up.

The greatest love song since 1919 . . . wow!

1988, On their 12th single release, U2 scored their first UK No.1 with 'Desire.' The track which was also a US No.3 hit was taken from their album 'Rattle And Hum.'
