Default Billy Bush is making his TV comeback as host of a new version of Extra

https://people.com/tv/billy-bush-to-...-tape-scandal/

Starting Sept. 9, Bush will host Extra Extra, a new iteration of Extra that will feature a modernized set with an in-depth focus at topics including pop-culture, sports and politics. Current Extra host Mario Lopez will continue in his job through the rest of the season. The new Extra is part of the syndicated entertainment show's move from NBC to Fox stations this fall. This will be Bush's first TV gig since he was dropped from the Today show following the emergence of his infamous Donald Trump Access Hollywood tape before the 2016 election. The Hollywood Reporter reported in January that Bush was in talks for Extra. We all have to be able to evolve as we grow, Bush tells People. The guy that left the scene in 2016 was already a changed person (since 2005), but I had the opportunity to grow up a little bit. Facing adversity in some way is good. And I feel Ill be better at my job than I ever was. This is my next step.

Billy Bush: Former President George W. Bush gave me advice in after my Trump-Access Hollywood tape scandal

W called me three days after I got fired, Billy Bush says of the former president, who is his first cousin. I asked him, What do I do? I need to fight. And he said, No, it isnt worth it. You have an opportunity here to just live and accept the fact that youre not extraordinary. Its going to be fine. And he was right. It was announced this morning that Billy Bush will be returning to TV as host of a new version of Extra, titled Extra Extra.

Extra Extra with Billy Bush is set to address the Trump tape -- and devote 30% to "how-the-sausage-gets-made footage"

Lisa Gregorisch-Dempsey, Extra's executive producer for the past 19 years, gave Bush his first big break as an Extra freelancer in 2001. Now she's invited him back to host a revamp of the show, titled Extra Extra, launching on Sept. 9. “I looked him in the eye and said, ‘I don’t know if you have enough humility for people to welcome you back,’” Gregorisch-Dempsey recalled of interviewing Bush three times before giving him the job as lead anchor. “America loves a comeback story. But we have to like you for America to like you.” During rehearsals last month, Bush asked if he should address his infamous Access Hollywood Trump tape on the first episode. “I think at the end of the show,” she said. “And you talk about how grateful you are for this chance — one, let’s not forget, given to you by a woman.” Extra Extra will be a different show with Bush, one that focuses less on the anchor reading the teleprompter and more on "how-the-sausage-gets-made footage." “This is watching a working journalist — a rarity in this genre — whose contacts in Hollywood are second to none,” Gregorisch-Dempsey said. “Watching Billy call stars directly. Watching him racing against deadline. Watching him greet the Real Housewife who unbelievably arrives for an on-set interview with a 10-person entourage.” The parts showing Bush behind the scenes will be in black and white with a blue digital clock counting down to deadline. Bush, for his part, tells The New York Times he still holds some resentment for his time at NBC, especially for his Today colleagues who sought to undercut him during his five months on the show. Bush added that he can promise his new boss one thing: "I will absolutely be better at my job than I ever was." Why? “Because I have empathy,” he said. “I do not like the tearing down of people and this lack of forgiveness and the shaming. I think the people I interview will appreciate that.”

Billy Bush's Extra Extra will stick with the title Extra after a legal threat

When Bush was announced as the new anchor of Extra in May, it was also announced that the long-running syndicated entertainment news show would be retitled Extra Extra. But soon after announcing the name-change, a business called Extra Extra that publishes newsletters and magazines related to entertainment-industry trade shows threatened legal action. The owner of that business has held the trademark for "Extra Extra" since 1997. So Extra Extra is changing its name back to Extra to avoid the cost of a lawsuit.

Shaun Robinson slams her former Access Hollywood co-anchor Billy Bush for "pain" his "white privilege" caused her

Robinson responded this morning to the Extra host's tweet about discussing the George Floyd protests with NFL commentator and former player Nate Burleson. "Good Morning @thebillybush," she tweeted. "I appreciate you being an ally NOW. But, if you want to talk about the pain #WhitePrivilege causes African Americans, you should probably also talk to the black woman who sat next to you on the set of #AccessHollywood for years."
