Everything that could possibly go wrong for a series went wrong. The show moved to a new night (Monday) placing it against stiffer competition, Little House (a smash hit) and a show that appealed to the same audience as Kotter did, WKRP, with a breakout character yet (Johnny Fever). Of course the show's decline had already started in season 3, there were 3 million fewer viewers than season 2 so interest was already starting to wane. The final and most devastating blow is still yet to come, Kaplan basically quits the series and Travolta isn't far behind appearing in a fraction of the episodes.
