The original airings on ABC, which started in 1960, were in black and white for the first two seasons. I'm not sure of the reason, but probably many ABC affiliates were not equipped for color, and color was primarily an RCA/NBC thing at the time (ABC had very little color and CBS had no color). Also there were very few color sets in homes around 1960.

All of those episodes were shot in color--it's just that the TV print for ABC was black and white.

Probably by fall 1962 the show had proven itself well enough that ABC relented and showed it in color.
