Although patriotic Broadway songwriter/performer George M. Cohan declared in "Yankee Doodle Dandy" that he was "a real live nephew of my Uncle Sam, born on the Fourth of July," it was actually on this day in 1878, July 3, that Cohan was born. Close enough! Cohan's other songs include "You're a Grand Old Flag" and "Give My Regards to Broadway."

It was also on this day in 1971 that Jim Morrison died in Paris.
