Comedy superstar Patrice O'Neal -- who recently performed at the "Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen" -- suffered a stroke last week ... this according to his friends on the "Opie and Anthony Show."

O'Neal's pal Jim Norton made the announcement on the air this morning ... adding, "We wanted it to come from us ... we don’t know how he is. We don’t know how he’s going to be."

Norton added, "I didn’t want to do this by myself. I wish we had more news for you.”

He suffered a stroke in October.

And now word is out that Patrice O'Neal has died at age 41.

Gossip Cop reports that Opie and Anthony radio show co-host Gregg Hughes confirmed the news, tweeting, "Yes it's true that our pal Patrice O'Neal has passed away. The funniest and best thinker i've ever known PERIOD. #devastated."

O'Neal was a regular guest on the radio show. He also participated in the big Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen in September in Culver City, Calif.

How sad. I recently watched that episode. Much too young to die. Prayers up for his loved ones.
