and the world got on without us
Just as if we were never here at all
for the next big thing that ever happened
trying not to fall
Anything but hearts that beat like thunder
Anything but love would be enough
for anyone but you

When cheerful, aspiring writer Hannah met neurotic investigative reporter Marty
on a plane and calmed his frazzled nerves, she did not imagine it would
lead to a new career, much less to romance. Marty got her an interview at Chicago Weekly
magazine, where she landed a job as a researcher sitting right across from his desk. It
wasn't love at first (or even fiftieth) sight for these two opposites, but their
mutual attraction grew until they were indeed in love by the second season.
Looking on and kibitzing as the budding romance developed were an assortment
of eccentric friends and co-workers. Norman was the blustery editor, replaced in
the fall of 1989 by hard driving, super chic Catherine (who promoted Hannah to writer); Julie
was the editor's fawning assistant; Pamela, a catty writer; and Leo, Hannah's outdoorsman dad. Brian
arrived in the fall of 1989 as a very British TV critic; he lasted only one season before
going berserk in Marshall's Field's department store and
smashing all the TV sets on display. Hannah got encouragement from landlady and best
friend Robin, but none from no-nonsense columnist Mike, who joined the staff in 1991.
