Hilarious Emmy Award-winning Ellen DeGeneres made a
triumphant, albeit short return to TV in "THE ELLEN
SHOW." The new half hour sitcom debuted on CBS on
September 24th, 2001. With a stellar supporting cast
including Cloris Leachman ("The Mary Tyler Moore
Show") and Martin Mull ("Roseanne"), the series
produced a total of 18 episodes. Now you can own this
2-disc set featuring every episode, including the six
not broadcast on television, filled with recognizable
The premise of the series was the character of Ellen
returning to her hometown of Clark to accept an award.
She quickly finds things are just the same as when she
left. Her sister Catherine (Emily Rutherford) gets
involved with the wrong men, her mother keeps her room
exactly as it used to be, and her old high school
teacher is still teaching! Unfortunately, Ellen finds
out she's lost her job at the dot com company she
worked at, and surprises herself by deciding to stay
in Clark. Who says you can't go home again? Ellen,
Episodes Included / Notable Guest Stars:
The 18 episodes for this series are: Pilot, Walden
Pond, Chain Reaction, Vanity Hair, The Move, Muskrat
Love, Joe, Cathy's Taffy, Missing the Bus, Alive and
Kicking, Ellen's First Christmas, A Bird in the Hand,
Just the Duck, Shallow Gal, Gathering Moss, A Matter
of Principal, Where the Sun Doesn't Shine, & One for
the Roadshow. Some of the latter ones never made it on
air even, so they will be all-new to you, such as
Gathering Moss with special guest John Ritter.
Guest stars over the course of the season included
Mary Tyler Moore ("The Mary Tyler Moore Show"), John
Ritter ("Three's Company"), Dakota Fanning ("War of
the Worlds"), Betty White ("The Golden Girls"), and
Maureen McCormick ("The Brady Bunch").
The packaging is that of at typical release. Two slip
discs that hold each disc for the set. The front of
the cover features Ellen front and center in front of
the supporting cast. The logo is up front. It's a very
nice design and everyone looks great! The two
slip-discs are quite neat, as they showcase Ellen in
front of the various guest stars that visited
throughout the season. Case 1 features Ellen along
with guests Dakota Fanning and Betty White (to name a
few). The second case features Ellen along with guests
John Ritter, Mary Tyler Moore and Maureen McCormick
(again, to name a few). It's a nice design! The two
discs themselves are designed in the same way as the
case art. Ellen with the guest cast. Disc 1 contains
episodes 1-9 and Disc 2 contains episodes 10-18.
Menu Design and Navigation:
The menu starts out with a picture of Ellen, and the
other supporting cast in small boxes next to her.
Behind her is a moving background that changes colors.
The theme music loops throughout. The selections are
"Play All Episodes" in which you can select to play
all episodes without interruption, "Episode Selection"
in which you can pick and choose which episode you'd
like to watch from a new menu and "Previews" in which
you can view a commercial for various Sony releases.
That takes you to another menu which lists "Ladieís
Night (TV)" "80s Hits," "News Radio," "The King of
Queens," and "Rent." Like I said, they are just
commercials for Sony releases of those items I listed
Video and Audio Quality:
Considering the series was only broadcast five years
ago, in 2001, the video is re-mastered and in great
quality. The video is in widescreen! So it is just
awesome. The audio is also fine--nothing to be worried
about. Chapter skips are available.

None are available on this set. Iím sure Ellen would
have done some commentary if asked.
After seeing this series for the first time since
2001, I just have to ask: how was this show cancelled!
And why didn't it get good ratings? The plotlines are
interesting, the acting is top-notch and it's a GOOD
show. I really don't get why no one watched. That
disappointing part of the set is that there are no
special features. What a bummer! I can't believe the
studio didn't try and get a bloopers reel, or
commentary. It's a shame. Overall, a great release and
fans of Ellen should definitely go out and get this!
It's worth the watch.
