Introduction:

Bob Newhart is back in another batch of brilliant episodes which features a stellar supporting cast. Beloved comedian, Bob Newhart stars as Dr. Robert Hartley, a therapist who sees his share of crazy, neurotic and troubled people come through his door -- and that's just at home! Suzanne Pleshette co-stars as Bob's wife, Emily, a teacher. Next-door neighbor Howard Borden is played by Bill Daily. Bob's other best friend is dentist Jerry, played by Peter Bonerz and their secretary, Carol, and is played by the fantastically funny Marcia Wallace. For the first time, 20th Century Fox is releasing the complete fourth season of "The Bob Newhart Show" on DVD. The set will include all 24 episodes, as well as commentary tracks and a gag reel.

Memorable Episodes / Notable Guest Stars:

Memorable episodes include "The Longest Goodbye" in which Bob's friend overstays his welcome. "Carol's Wedding" is the one in which Carol announces her plan to wed. "Who Is Mr. X" in which Bob's appearance on a television show sparks controversy when he mentions his treatment of an unnamed public official. "Over The River and Through The Woods" in which Bob hosts a booze-soaked Thanksgiving for the guys while Emily's out of town. "Fathers and Sons and Mothers" is the one in which Bob's mother comes for a visit. "Bob Has To Have His Tonsils Out..." in which Bob spends Christmas Eve in the hospital. "My Boy Guillermo" in which Jerry's ex-girlfriend Courtney surprises him when she proposes marriage ... and instant father-hood. "Guaranteed Not to Shrink" in which Carol goes back to school to pursue a psychology degree.

Guest stars this season include Jennifer Warren, Will Mackenzie, Tom Poston, Howard Hessman, Rene Auberjonis, Martha Scott, Howard Platt, Graham Jarvis, Pat Finley, Gail Strickland and Veronica Hamel among others.

Packaging:

The coloring is again gold in color, but features a large picture in the center with Bob's face on a drawing of his body in a session with the supporting cast peeking in through the door. The back of the box features a nice description of the series as well as what the set includes.

Inside the set are two individual cases that feature the same design as the main box cover. The discs themselves are double-sided so there isn't any artwork on them. Discs 1 and 2 are located in the first case while Disc 3 is located in the second case. Disc 1 contains episodes 1-8 (four on each side), Disc 2 contains episodes 9-16 (again, four on each side) and Disc 3 contains episodes 17-24 (four on each side along with the bonus features).

Menu Design and Navigation:

The menu appears to be changing each season, which is actually kind of nice to see. This time it features a drawing of Bob Newhart (Disc 1/Side B features Emily, Disc 2/Side A features Jerry, Disc 2/Side B features Howard, Disc 3/Side A features Carol and Disc 3/Side B features Bob again). The list of episodes on that side immediately pops up next to him. It's as simple as that. Also available though is a "Play All" option. Although the main menu is simple, when you select an episode to watch it takes you to another menu that offers you "Play Episode," "Scene Selection," "Language Selection," or "Commentary" (if it's available on that episode). It's actually a pretty nice way of laying things out.

Video and Audio Quality:

The audio is fine nothing much really say about it except closed captioning is available as are English and Spanish subtitles. The video is also very good, for a show that was on in the late '70s! It looks great. Each episode also appears to run uncut, averaging about 25 minutes per episode and chapter skips are available.

A great interview with Bob Newhart, intercut with clips from the show, as he talks about the fifth season.

Final Comments:

Once again, 20th Century Fox has done a great job on this set. I like that they keep changing the menu up every season. The special features included were fantastic--a gag reel, five different commentary tracks and a featurette -- an interview with Newhart. Kudos to Fox! I can't wait for the last two seasons to come out! Hard to believe we're almost there to the end.
