First of all, having never actually seen an episode (I have heard of them, and their show, of course) I was anxious to review this set. I had heard good things about it, and I wasn't disappointed in the least. It's a wonderful set to own, especially for fans of the show. I found every episode to be very funny and well written. Not overly comedic, but a more subtle funny.
In terms of memorable episodes, they all are, in my opinion. I have no knowledge of any popular episodes so I couldn't even begin to list them. On the episodes I've watched (12) there were no really memorable guest stars, except the usual roundabout of recurring regulars.
The packaging is nice. Although I would prefer a single set (like most TV show releases) these are being released in volumes (think of "I Love Lucy" season one). The cover art is good and each box has 3 Black and White screen shots. On the back, there are episode descriptions with a single screenshot representing each episode. There is also a nice list of scene access (selecting scenes from each episode, ala movies; but no play all). There is also a quick blurb at the top about the show.
On each disc there are only 4 episodes a piece. There is just one disc per case. There are no photos on the face of the DVD, just the show name on each disc. The discs are dirty white with black text (very unappealing, in my opinion). The menu feature is simple and easy to use; you can either play all episodes, or select scenes from the four episodes, although you can't select an individual episode to play. No theme is heard playing over the menu screen.
The video quality is absolutely fantastic; crystal clear. I was so amazed at the clarity; it was great. For being transferred from the original 35mm film masters, the quality is amazing. The audio, as well, was great, but unfortunately, there were no subtitles OR closed captioning. There are no special features on any of the 3 volumes I received, unfortunately.
In closing, I was trying to figure out what they could add on to the volumes for extras, but I really couldn't come up with anything. I'd enjoy seeing a featurette on the process of re-mastering the episodes, but that is a long-shot. First and foremost, I suggest releasing the show in sets, not in volumes. I was purchasing I Love Lucy S1 in volumes and grew annoyed at the 12 dollar price tag for each disc that only contained four episodes, so I suggest, highly, that The Abbott & Costello Show be released in sets if the sales go well. In conclusion, I loved the show; I really did. The episodes were funny, well-written, and now, an underrated show that belongs back on the air. Let's hope we see more releases in the future!
