SILVER SPOONS: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON
25th Anniversary DVD Contains 22 Episodes on Three Discs with Exclusive Bonus Features
Guest Stars Include Sharon Stone, Mr. T, Joseph Lawrence, Gary Coleman, and Jason Bateman
CULVER CITY, CALIF. (April 9, 2007) Sony Pictures Home Entertainment celebrates the 25th anniversary of one of the most popular sitcoms of the ‘80s with the June 19 DVD debut of Silver Spoons: The Complete First Season. Starring Ricky Schroder (The Champ), Joel Higgins (TV’s “Bare Essence”), and Erin Gray (TV’s “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century”), the DVD includes all 22 episodes in a three-disc boxed set. The DVD will be available for $29.95 SRP.
When Silver Spoons began its five-season, 115-episode run for NBC on September 25, 1982, the show turned 12-year-old, Golden Globe®-winner Ricky Schroder into an instant teen heartthrob. With his blond, clean-cut, all-American good looks, Schroder dominated the pages of teen magazines in the early-to-mid ‘80s, won two Young Artist Awards as best actor for the series, and inspired a devoted fan base that continues to support his acting career into adulthood (TV’s “NYPD Blue,” “24”).
The series depicted every kid’s wildest fantasy. When Ricky Stratton (Schroder) is reunited with his long-lost father Edward (Higgins), Dad turns out to be a young-at-heart, “overgrown kid” who owns a multinational toy company empire and has turned his mansion into a veritable playground complete with a scale model freight train that runs throughout the house. The role reversal inherent in the show found Ricky more mature than his father, but under Ricky’s influence, Edward eventually matures, while Edward inspires Ricky to act more like a kid.
The storylines of Silver Spoons were mainly light situations regarding classic boyhood mischief and the misunderstandings surrounding a father and son getting to know one another. However, in periodic “very special episodes” during the first season, the series dealt with tougher issues including schoolyard bullies and kidnapped children. Guest stars included Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct, Casino), Mr. T (Rocky III, TV’s “The A Team,” “I Pity the Fool”), Joseph Lawrence (AKA Joey, TV’s “Blossom,” “Dancing with the Stars”), Gary Coleman (TV’s “Diff'rent Strokes”), and, in a recurring role as Ricky’s best friend, Jason Bateman (TV’s “Arrested Development”).

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - In recent years Rick Schroder has reinvented himself as a dramatic actor thanks to three seasons on the cop drama "NYPD Blue." However, he first became a star during his five-season stint on the '80s sitcom "Silver Spoons."
The actor will revisit his comic roots during February sweeps when he guest stars on NBC's "Scrubs," playing Paul, Elliot's potential love interest (Sarah Chalke). Recognizing him from the hospital, when they meet at a bar Elliot is smitten, only to have her assumptions challenged the next day when she learns that Paul is a nurse and not a fellow doctor.
Schroder's consecutive episodes will air on NBC Thursday, Jan. 30 and Feb. 6 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
Schroder Goes for the Funny on 'Scrubs'
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - One of Rick Schroder's first scenes in his guest-starring stint on "Scrubs," which begins this week, involves him entering a room carrying a pair of bedpans.
While wearing pink scrubs.
Of course, if that mental picture makes you chuckle, then Schroder has done his job, which is, of course, to be funny.
"I know when I do something that makes my heart beat, and I get scared, that it's a good thing. I was scared on my first day on 'Scrubs,' " says Schroder, who starred on "NYPD Blue" from 1998 to 2001. "It was so great to just mix it up. I had a great time doing comedy again."
Schroder begins a multi-episode arc as Paul Flowers, a male nurse (hence the pink scrubs), on Thursday's (Jan. 30) 40-minute edition of the hospital comedy. Elliot (Sarah Chalke) falls for him instantly when the two meet outside of work, but she's horrified to learn the next day that Paul is not a doctor.
"I'm planning everything -- babies, marriage, where we're having the wedding -- within five minutes," Chalke says of her character. Paul's position at the hospital is "initially quite a shock for Elliot, and she has to see if she can get over herself."
It's been quite a while since Schroder has done comedy on television -- going back as far as "Silver Spoons," even. He compares it to riding a bike, saying that once an actor has a sense comic timing, it's not something he ever really loses. The show's producers must have agreed; what started as a two-episode appearance has grown into four, with the chance for yet another appearance.
"They obviously like what I do for Sarah's character, because she's so funny in the way she relates to me and is so insecure. She just gets crazy around me," Schroder says. "It's hysterical what it's done for her character, so I think that's the reason they decided to keep me."
Chalke says she knew Schroder would fit in with the close-knit cast when they filmed the bedpan scene on Schroder's first day on the set. During one take, instead of just setting the pans down, he crashed them together like cymbals.
"That had the entire crew in stitches," Chalke says. "He kept improvising all these things. He's really smart and funny, great with comedy. It's been an incredible four weeks."
