(see this users gallery) John Ales plays a rogue genie who, after being banished to a rug for 2,000 years, is finally released by an unsuspecting single mom who becomes his reluctant new master, in Touchstone Television's "You Wish," a new half-hour comedy for ABC.
Ales describes his genie as a "puppy dog who wants to be useful but, as a result, clashes with his new master, Gillian [Harley Jane Kozak]. After being rolled up in a rug for so long, he is naturally at somewhat of a disadvantage in a twenty-first-century world."
With a twisted wit and a fiery gleam in his eye, Ales studied at Rutgers Professional Actor's Training Program and, since graduating, has continued to distinguish himself in films and on TV.
While working on stage in New York in "Summer Play Party" (1992-1994), Ales landed the role of the host of MTV's award-winning show "Lip Service." "Deep inside," he explains wryly, "I knew there was an emcee lurking about."
While still buzzing away at MTV, Ales began a co-starring role with Dabney Coleman on the critically acclaimed comedy series "Madman of the People," as Dylan, Coleman's slacker son/savant.
Ales spent the following summer appearing as Professor Klump's eager confidant, Jason -- better known as "hamster boy" -- in the smash Eddie Murphy film "The Nutty Professor." He has also been seen by movie audiences as an outrageous Greek covert-operations agent in the Leslie Nielsen-starrer "Spy Hard." In addition to his work in television and film, Ales is especially proud of his work with the Shoestring Players at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Ales, a Southern California native, currently lives in Los Angeles. |
