(see this users gallery) Roll Out aired from October 1973 until January 1974 on CBS.
Set in France during World War II, Roll Out was the story of the men of the 5050th Trucking Company, the " Red Ball Express," an army trucking unit that managed to get supplies through to troops at the front despite any and all problems. Military discipline meant little to these rowdy men, whose prime purpose was to move war supplies no matter how they did it. Capt. Calvelli (Val Bisoglio) was the leader of the unit, which was mostly black. Sweet and Jed ( Stu Gilliam, Hilly Hicks) were two of his best drivers, and Sgt. Bryant ( Mel Stewart) the tough crusty career military man. Others included Ed Begley, Jr. as Lt. Robert Chapman; Garrett Morris ( later to join NBC's Saturday Night Live) as Wheels; Darrow Igus as Jersey; Rod Gist as Phone Booth; and Theodore Wilson as High Strung. When not on assignment, the men of the 5050th sought recreation at the nightclub adjacent to their base camp, run by Madam Delacort(Penny Santon).
Based on the story of an actual World War II transportation unit.
