Phil of the Future aired from June 2004 until August 2006 on The Disney Channel.

Another bright, sunny family sitcom from the Disney Channel, this one about the Diffy's from the year 2121 whose time machine, which was supposed to take them on a vacation , malfunctioned and dumped them in the year 2004. Teenager Phil ( Ricky Ullman) had to try to fit in at H.G. Wells Junior/Senior High without anyone finding out the family secret-especially suspicious snooping vice principal Hackett( J.P. Manoux). Confidant Phil pulled it off pretty well, while also dealing with his prankster sister, Pim ( Amy Bruckner), who kept misusing the family's futuristic gadgets for her own ends, and his parents goofy dad Lloyd ( Craig Anton) and smart, sarcastic mom Barbara ( Lise Simms). Keely ( Alyson Michalka) was Phil's best friend at school who knew the secret , and Curtis ( J.P. Manoux) a caveman who had stowed away on the time machine when the Diffy's passed through the stone age. Now he had to adapt too.

Lloyd spent most of the series trying to fix their time machine so that they could get back to their own time, and in the final episode succeeded. But did they want to leave their new friends? In the end it was not clear whether or not they did go back.

Theme Song Lyrics

Meet a boy named Phil and his family
On vacation from the 22nd century
They got a rented time-machine and they're on their way
To a time way, way, way back in the day

So now he's Phil , Phil, Phil of the Future
Keeping it together just as best as he can. Phil, Phil, Phil of the Future
He's a 22nd century man, a 22nd century man

On a holiday through history,
But the final destination was a mystery
But something on the time-machine had blown
So they ended up right here in our time-zone

So now he's Phil, Phil, Phil of the Future,
Never knew in history just where he would land

So now he's Phil , Phil, Phil of the Future
Keeping it together just as best as he can. Phil, Phil, Phil of the Future
He's a 22nd century man, a 22nd century man

FOR YOUNG VIEWERS; Fooling Around With Future Perspectives

HE may look more ''Star Search'' than ''Star Wars,'' but the newest boy on Disney's block comes stocked with a century of wisdom.

In ''Phil of the Future,'' a comedy series shown Fridays at 7 p.m. on the Disney Channel, Ricky Ullman plays Phil Diffy, a 15-year-old evolutionary wonder from the year 2121 who gets stranded in 2004 when his family's rental time-travel machine crashes into the present.

Luckily, the Diffys (Dad, Mom, Phil and his younger sister, Pim) are equipped with enough futuristic supplies to spice up life in their bland California suburb, but not enough to give away their secret. These include spray-can food, laser racquetball and the InstaMorph, a handheld gadget that can immediately transform its user into another person.

Still, the nuclear family members spend a lot of time modulating their advanced knowledge to fit the 21st century's more limited perspective. World peace? That won't occur for another 90 years, but in 2004 it's legitimately hopeful to celebrate Unification Day with a meatloaf concocted from ingredients representing the seven noncombatant continents.

''The show is pretty stupendous,'' said Mr. Ullman in a telephone interview during the week of the series's June 18 premiere. ''It's about kids and their family moving to a new area and trying to fit into their new surroundings. I think all kids find themselves trying to relate to a new environment.''

Like his character, the 18-year-old Mr. Ullman is just trying to fit in. The latest member of the Disney star-making machine, he recently graduated with his public high school classmates in Fairfield, Conn. He finished up his senior year through independent study while filming ''Pixel Perfect,'' a full-length feature shown on the channel in January, and ''Phil of the Future'' in Los Angeles. Sure, he missed out on a few football games and senior traditions (he did, however, attend his prom), but Mr. Ullman has been gearing up for leading-man status since he began working in community theater at 7.

As the channel's newest entry in its pool of teenage headliners, Mr. Ullman has turned to two of its more stellar members, Shia La Beouf of ''Even Stevens'' and Raven-Symone of ''That's So Raven,'' for advice.

''I think the most important thing I learned from Shia and Raven is that you can't be prepared for it,'' he said of the anticipated onslaught of adolescent fame. ''There's no kind of bracing yourself and saying, 'This is what's going to happen.'

''I'm working with great people, our cast is phenomenal, and when you're doing an awesome thing, you should just really try to enjoy it.''

Which is what Mr. Ullman is doing as he pursues his plan of acting now while putting college on hold. ''I hope we have another two seasons,'' he said. ''It's kind of exciting being part of this whole thing, not knowing exactly where you're going to be tomorrow, but also, just in the big term.''

''When I look at Shia and Hilary Duff and Raven, and all three of them have taken off, it's good to see that they made it through, and they're alive and well,'' he added. ''I don't know exactly where my path is going to take me, but down the road I expect to still be standing.'' Kathryn Shattuck
