Spencer ( Under One Roof) aired from December 1984 until July 1985 on NBC.
This half-hour sitcom about the trials and tribulations of a high school student went through its own trials and tribulations during its brief run. Spencer ( Chad Lowe) was a teenager coping with the pains of adolescence. At 16, he was a bit eccentric, tended to become involved with causes and incidentally was having trouble finding the right girl. His chief nemesis was Mr. Beanley ( Richard Sanders), the high school guidance counselor, who just didn't understand that Spencer was making a moral statement when he set free the laboratory mice to prevent them from being disected. Spencer's parents George and Doris ( Ronny Cox, Mimi Kennedy)were understanding, but bewildered. Andrea ( Amy Locane) was his rather mature younger sister ; Wayne and Herbie ( Grant Heslov, Dean Cameron) were two buddies; and Miss Spier ( Beverly Archer) was his English teacher.
Production was halted after just five episodes, when Chad Lowe quit the series after his demands for above-the-title billing and creative control were turned down. The role was eventually recast, and the series returned to the air in March with a new title , Under One Roof, and a new star, Ross Harris as Spencer Winger. The other regulars from Spencer remained , exept for Ronny Cox. In this new version, George had run off with a 23-year-old girl leaving Doris to raise the kids alone. Doris' parents Ben and Millie ( Harold Gould, Frances Sternhagen), moved in to help, taking Spencer's bedroom and forcing him to sleep in a room in the attic ( more problems!). Mr. Beanley had become the school principal, and Miss Spier now taught Spanish.
The reworked series was short-lived. To further confuse matters , reruns of the original Spencer aired in June and July.
