(see this users gallery) Meet Corliss Archer aired from July 1951 until March 1952 on CBS.
Meet Corliss Archer ( which was based on Hugh Herbert's play Kiss and Tell) had been on CBS radio since 1943 and was still being aired in the early 1950s when this television version was added in 1951. It starred Lugene Sanders as Corliss Archer, a headstrong teenager ( Sanders played the part on radio for a time and later played Babs on The Life of Riley). The stories revolved around the energetic and vivacious Corliss as she made the transition from little girl to young woman. Fred Shields, who had played Corliss's father Mr. Harry Archer through most of the radio run , re-created his role for the new medium as did Irene Tedrow as her mother, Mrs. Janet Archer in part of the television run. ( Ms. Tedrow took over the role in January 1952 replacing Frieda Inescort). Also featured was Corliss's boyfriend Dexter Franklin ( played by Bobby Ellis).
This series was fed to different parts of the country on different days during the summer of 1951. The Thursday shows were seen in the midwest while the rest of the country was seeing Your Esso Reporter. On Friday nights Meet Corliss Archer was available to those stations that did not carry it on Thursdays. Since it was done live from Los Angeles, the cast did the same show on consecutive nights.
Meet Corliss Archer surfaced on television brieftly from July until September 1951, in what was apparently a trial run and was revived early in 1952. The series was nowhere as successful as the radio version which ran from 1943 until 1955. A second filmed TV version of Meet Corliss Archer surfaced during the 1954-1955 season.
