(see this users gallery) Homeroom aired from September until December 1989 on ABC.
A mild-mannered writer of advertising jingles became a mild-mannered fourth-grade teacher in this gentile comedy filled with kids.Darry's ( Darryl Sivad) change of career was supported by his loving bride Vicki ( Penny Johnson), a medical student, but not by her caustic father Phil ( Bill Cobbs), who never failed to remind his son-in-law how much more he could be making in the ad world-or driving a bus ( as Phil had). Phil got to give his opinion a lot; he owned the brownstone in which Darryl and Vicki lived, rent-free, and he lived upstairs. Down at P.S. 391, the inner-city school where Darryl taught , the kids were bright and cheerful. Playing Darryl's students were Trent Cameron as Sam; Jahary Bennett as Devon; Billy Dee Willis as Donald; Daphne Lyn Jones as Lisa; and Tritia Setoguchi as Tritia. Anthony ( Claude Brooks)was Darryl's younger brother.

ABC's ''Homeroom'' (tomorrow at 8:30 P.M.) features Darryl Sivad, still another stand-up comic venturing into sitcom territory, as a dedicated fellow named Darryl Harper, who quits his advertising job to teach a fourth-grade class of inner-city youngsters. At home, the good part for Darryl is his lovely, supportive wife (Penny Johnson). But then there is his nagging father-in-law (Bill Cobbs), who also happens to be his landlord.
At school, Darryl struggles imaginatively both to instruct and entertain his wary but intrigued children. His routine has standard Bill Cosby and Sammy Davis Jr. elements. In this first glimpse of the show -created and written by Gary Gilbert and Andrew Scheinman, who are also among the executive producers -Darryl watches with pride as his students win a math competition, but then discovers that there was cheating involved. The episode, directed by Art Wolff, ends with appropriate morality lessons. Darryl gets to be simultaneously funny and touching. The children are adorable.
