Star of the Family aired from September until December 1982 on ABC.

The star of this family was 16-year-old Jennie Lee ( Kathy Maisnik), whose singing talents ( in the country/pop vein) were good enough to begin getting her show-business offers. Her dad, grumpy Fire Captain Buddy Krebs ( Brian Dennehy), was proud but worried, not wanting his little angel to grow up too soon-not for at least the next 20 or 30 years. That was only one of Buddy's troubles, though. His wife had run off with a bellhop, his 17-year-old son, Douggie ( Michael Dudikoff), had muscles where he should have had brains, and his young charges down at the firehouse were a bunch of flakes: Feldman ( Todd Susman) wrote to his mother telling her he was a cardiologist, Rosetti ( George DeLoy) had sex on the brain, and Max ( Danny Mora) was a hothead Hispanic whose English was fractured. Then there was Moose ( Judy Pioli), his daughter's amazon of a manager. You think you got troubles?

A Review from The New York Times

For illustrative contrast, there is ''Star of the Family,'' the new sit-com making its debut on ABC-TV (Channel 7) at 8:30 this evening. The show offers Brian Dennehy as Buddy Krebs, a fire captain whose wife has run off, embarrassingly enough, with a bellhop. That leaves Buddy to take care of his two teen-age children. Douggie (Michael Dudikoff), the older one, is an exceptionally dim-witted jock preoccupied with staying fit for football. Jennie Lee (Kathy Maisnik), 16, is the potential star of the family as she begins a career as a country-pop singer. Then, just to round things off, there is the gang down at the firehouse, always getting involved in the captain's private life.

The initial episode has Jennie Lee, under the supervision of a feisty manager named Moose (Judy Pioli), making an appearance on a local television station and singing a country-type ballad about wanting to be something more than daddy's little girl. Daddy naturally assumes that his little girl is writing her material from experience and is really having a love affair with someone. Daddy is worried. What daddy would not be when his little girl is talking about going on a road trip with a woman called Moose?

Mr. Dennehy is an affable actor, a kind of big gentle bear, and the rest of the cast members are reasonably appealing. But ''Star of the Family'' badly needs some sparks of inspiration to enliven its already soggy personality.
