In this comedy spin-off from The Jeffersons, Marla Gibbs starred as Florence Johnston, who left her position as the Jeffersons outspoken maid to become the executive housekeeper at the St. Frederick , one of Manhattan's better hotels. Her new respnsibilities included managing most of the hotel's staff. Elena ( Liz Torres)was her efficient assistant; Earl ( Patrick Collins), the barely competent house detective ; Hank ( Robert Costanzo), the beefy chief engineer in charge of heat, air conditioning , and plumbing; and Betty ( Ruth Brown), one of the floor supervisors. Florence's biggest problem , however, and the target of the most of her jibes , was her stuffy boss , hotel manager Lyle Block ( Larry Linville). Block was in fact reminiscent of another character played by Mr. Linville in the series M*A*S*H, the insufferable Major Frank Burns. After a four-week spring tryout, the series was not renewed, and Florence returned to the Jeffersons' employ the next season.
