Muscle aired from January until May 1995 on the WB.
Manhattan's Survival Gym provided the setting for this rather mean-spirited spoof of soap operas. Jim Atkinson ( Adam West), who had founded the Survival Gym chain of fitness centers, which had grown to 2,500 around the country, dropped dead in the premiere episode of Muscle after walking into the sauna and finding his wife Jane ( Shannon Kenny), having sex with his fast-living son Kent ( Dan Gauthier). It turned out that Jim had been poisoned , but Kent, who was convinced his stepmother was responsible , was the first one arrested. The other prime suspects were Jane, the bitchy, horny, much younger wife who hoped to inherit Jim's fortune, and Victor (T.E. Russell), the hardworking gym manager who had been ill treated by his boss. The featured trainers at the gym were Cleo ( Wendy Benson), an aspiring actress who looked and acted angelic but had a hidden past; Gianni ( Nestor Carbonell), the resident gigolo; down-to-Earth Angela ( Michole White), who loved Gianni but had to compete with rich Dottie ( Maree Cheatham) for his affections ; and Sam ( Steve Henneberry), the thickly muscled but naive and insecure star trainer.
Among the gym members were Kent's cousin Bronwyn ( Amy Pietz), the beautiful lesbian local TV anchorwoman who threatened with exposure , came out of the closet while on the air; Garnet ( Michael Boatman), a sleazy grandstanding attorney with an insatiable apitite for publicity; Robert ( Jerry Levine), a former financial manipulator on Wall Street recently released from prison, who hoped to make a new fortune marketing a line of excercise videos starring Sam; and Marshall ( Alan Ruck), Jane's sex-obsessed psychiatrist who told everyone what his patients had told him in confidance.
A Review from USA TODAY
TV PREVIEW/BY MATT ROUSH
PUMPED-UP
Who needs a serialized sitcom when we already have Melrose Place? Muscle ( *1/2, 9 ET/PT) is a large-ensemble Soap at a health club, with a laugh track on steroids. Proud of its smarmy venality, this doesn't have to work hard to be WB's best show. So it doesn't.
The twisted plot kicks in when gym-franchise mogul Adam West keels over dead in a sauna where his scheming new wife ( Shannon Kenny) is seducing his good-no heair ( Dan Gauthier). Before the hour pilot is over , the scramble is on for West's frozen sperm.
It's that kind of show. It's that kind of network.
