Mr. Roberts aired from September 1965 until September 1966 on NBC.
The adventures of the crew of the U.S.S. Reluctant, a cargo ship operating far behind the lines in the South Pacific during World War 2, provided the stories for this comedy. Life on board was incredibly dull and monotonous, especially for young Mr. Roberts( Roger Smith). He wanted the opportunity to really participate in the war effort, not slosh around in the middle of nowhere on a mangy old tub, and was desperately trying to get transferred to another ship. Ensign Pulver ( Steve Harmon)was the crewman who was always scheming to find ways of livening up the otherwise boring existence of the crew-as long as no real work was involved. Stern old Captain Morton( Richard X. Slattery) was the major concern of most of the crew-they were preoccupied with finding ways to drive him slowly out of his mind.
Others in the cast were George Ives as Doc; Ronald Starr as Seaman Mannion; Richard Sinatra as Seaman D'Angelo; Ray Reese as Seaman Reber and John McCook as Seaman Stefanowski.
Based on the book by Thomas Heggen, which was subsequently made into a hit play ( 1948) and a movie ( 1955) starring Henry Fonda, Jack Lemmon, and James Cagney.
The tv series was produced by James Komack who later produced Chico And The Man and Welcome Back Kotter.
