There was serious culture clash when punk-rock tattooed, and pierced, 21-year-old Joanne ( Kelly De Martino) showed up on the doorstep of her very straight suburban biological mother. Raised by a wealthy couple , but knowing she was adopted, she had always felt out of place and decided to seek out her real mother . Joanne's perpetually perky birth mother, Nicki ( Julie Hagerty), who worked at Major Mart, a discount department store in Pittsburgh, had become pregnant by a drum major in high school and given the child up for adoption. Now she was a veritable Stepford wife, cloyingly sweet and obsessed with her Hummel figurines. Joanne was cynical , a total vegitarian, and found it difficult to live with the Catholic Becks, particularly with Nicki's grouchy husband Gary ( Cliff Bemis). In mid- November she tried to make peace with the family and got a job helping their young amiable neighbor , Bo ( Fabrizio Filippo), stuffing envelopes for companies. Bo had the hots for Joanne, but she preffered to keep him as a friend in whom she could confide. Nicki's other daughter was sugary sweet little Ami ( Renee Olstead) , who to her mom's dismay, picked up some of her half-sister's traits ( " I want to be a pagan like Joanne.")
