(see this users gallery) The New Monkees aired during the 1987-1988 season in first run syndication.
The 1980's was an era of nostalgia, and perhaps the most surprising revival was that of the ultimate " manufactured" rock group of the 60's-The Monkees. Reruns of their 60's tv series on the MTV cable network, a highly publicized concert tour by original members of the group in the summer of 1986 and reissues of their LP's all led trend-conscious producers to think the time was right to bring the public a " new" Monkees. A heavily promoted nationwide talent hunt was staged to find 4 young men to star in a new version of the 60's series.
The result was this high-tech, special-effects-laden collection of music videos, comic blackouts, and off-beat plots. It was set in a huge gothic mansion in which the 4 new Monkees Larry ( Larry Saltis), Dino ( Dino Kovas), Jared ( Jared Chandler) and Marty ( Marty Ross)lived and frolicked. They had a stuffy butler named Manford ( Gordon Oas-Heim) and hung out at a diner attached to the mansion where Rita, the waitress ( Bess Motta) worked , but many of their adventures took place without leaving home. Commenting on the proceedings was a sarcastic, bodiless pair of lips which appeared on television screens that seemed to be in every room. They were known as Helen, the lips ( Lynnie Godfrey).
The hype didn't work. The New Monkees Album didn't sell and the series didn't attracted an audience; apparently the public was more interested in the old Monkees. New Monkees was in production for less time than the search for its stars had taken.
